The 1997 Mercedes-Benz C230 replaces the C220 or earlier years and is part of the "baby Benz" lineup.
The '97 Benz C230 has a DOHC 2.3 liter, 148 horsepower engine, and while it's still in the entry-level luxury class, many consider it safe, dependable, and solidly built.
It has a 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, a special chip-within-the key rendering duplicated keys unable to start the car, a universal garage door opener, and double-wishbone suspension.
Although nothing is hidden on the C230's dashboard, making all gauges easy to read, the same cannot be said for viewing out the back. The high rear shelf minimizes viewing space, a complaint for many drivers.

No engine changes in the 1997 Mercedes-Benz C280, but boy, what a lot of cool conveniences!
The '97 C280 now comes standard with a 5-speed automatic transmission along with a nifty ignition key transponder that's really a universal garage door opener.
One new security feature can pose a drawback, however. There's a microchip put into the ignition key with a unique code that makes it so duplicated keys just won't work -- great to thwart thieves, not so great if you lose your key and try the one you made and stuck in the wheel well.
Virtually all drivers of the '97 Benz C280 consider it a pleasure to drive and a terrific ride with virtually no road noise.
