1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4-Door 4WDReview

Easy To Work On And Cheap To Maintain. Great Little Suv. — In Great Shape. Paint / Interior is pristine. Needs new tires. The only repair so far was in the brake drums and a coolant hose that burst. Gas mileage is what you expect 14-19mpg. Fun and very cheap to maintain.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Great Look for a SUV and very tough.

Cons: Bad Clearcoat Paint and usual Rocker Panel Rust.

My Love — Lots of get up and go, first year with the High Output. Has a shimmy sometimes after hitting a bump at high speeds. Rough around the edges. The 4wd makes it fun off road. Everythings pretty basic and simple. Great on gas. Rides like an SUV. etc etc

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Fun, 5spd, Solid, Interior is in great shape, etc

Cons: Needs alot of work to be back in tip top shape

The Merits Of 'jeepness' —

Back in the day, the Jeep name represented some specific ideas. Toughness. Basic. Proven. Reliable. Unsophisticated. Rugged. Those words pretty much summarize my '91 Cherokee. 'Course, in more recent days, the folks at Chrysler produced flashes of brilliance like the Jeep Compass--perhaps the worst vehicle I have ever driven. In every way. In fact, I don't think it's a stretch to say that the Compass and other similar Chrysler products are one reason why the company is now owned by Fiat following a government-induced Chapter 11 filing. But I digress... In my humble opinion, this generation of Jeep Cherokee was a no-excuses kind of truck. The kind of truck that said, "I'm a Jeep. If you want comfort, then go jump in a wimpy luxo-barge, baby!" Truth be told, the ergonomics were terrible, it was very difficult to get in and out of the back seat, and the interior fit and finish were pretty rough. Of course, it was also extremely reliable, the 4.0 liter straight six had an amazing amount of torque, and it had a certain angular, old-fashioned look that reflected it's 'tough-guy' reputation. I enjoyed this truck a lot simply because there was no pretense whatsoever. The Jeep Wrangler is the only current model that still reflects this type of ethos and perhaps that's somewhat of an indication of why Chrysler is struggling. I'm not saying that outdated engineering and poor ergonomics equals successful product, but the old Cherokee's had a certain 'Jeepness' that is lost of most of the current product line. And they really ought to try to get it back.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Reliable, tough, good looking in a rugged kind of way.

Cons: WWII ergonomics, rode like a truck (I guess b/c it was a truck...)

Great Suv. — Good ride, straight 6 can take a hard drive, 4wd will take you anywhere you want to go, short wheel base lets you climb steeper hills than a long wheel base truck. Would recommend it to anyone I know (that could afford the gas).

Pros: Will go anywhere, anytime.

Cons: Gas Hog

My Jeep Cherokee — It's old but still runs good and is reliable. Gas milage is crap and zero to 60 is like fifteen seconds but still the staight six hums. We've had to replace a lot but its still nice. Great car, and moderately fun to drive.

Pros: raw power, torquey engine, 4WD, comfy front seats

Cons: Junker, gas milage, slow

'91 Jeep Cherokee — My '91 Cherokee is a great vehicle, has a ton of power, the low end torque is off the hook, i'll burn out on accident often. It's from 1991 and still runs like a champ. I'm only annoyed with my breaks that i've recently been having problems with, the ABS has been slipping and the overall apparent reason of the 10ish mpg. That is the worst thing about this jeep.

Pros: Lots of Power!

Cons: Crappy mpg....

The Red Spartan — This is my off-road bruiser. Its not the biggest rig, or the most powerful, but its got torque and toughness that cant be matched. Its a 91 XJ 4wd, 5speed manual, Dana 30 in front, Dana 35 out back, New Process 231 Transfer case, and the venerable AMC I-6 4.0, the lift it has on it is a Rubicon Express 3.5 superflex, it has all the Rubicon extras center link, shocks, swaybar disconnect. The rims are Cragar 15x8 D=windows, and the tires are 33x12.50-15 Mickey Thompson Baja Claws.

Pros: Can tear you up, mean sucker

Cons: Need to get 4.11 gears

The V6 model had great power and quiet ride. Great style. The 4 cylinder was not powerful enough for me. The cargo area was too small for me so I am looking at the Grand Cherokee now instead . Read More
