One Of The Best Cars In The World - Ever. — I have owned four of the 190e w201. The " Baby Benz" was produced between 1984 and 1993, initially as a response to BMW's 3 Series and 5 Series - sized right in between them both. Benz reported spent $1 Billion in development on this first of what became the C Class, including a multi-link rear axle technology that afforded great handling - something even more sophisticated than the then-current S Class offered. Motivation in the US came in three choices: The 190D ( Diesel), the 190e 2.3 ( inline 4 cylinder gasoline) and in 1987, the 190e 2.6. All three versions were visually identical. Standard features were airbags, ABS, A/C, electric windows, sunroof, automatic transmission, alloy wheels, integrated foglights and front/rear defrosters. Options were limited to leather seats, electric front seats with power headrests (a first!). The fact that you see so many of these 190e's happily running around 30 years later is a testament to Mercedes build quality and how much fun this little car is to drive. Highly Recommend.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: The Baby Benz 190E is incredibly over-engineered and does just about everything better than you'd expect. Build quality is bank vault-like.

Cons: One can take issue with the 2.3's lack of power during initail acceleration, but heh - it gets over 30mpgs.....and at $4 a gallon, that's a very pleasant thing.

The Biggest Bargain In The Classic Car Market Today. — I've driven a 190e as a daily driver for almost five years - and not a day goes by that I don't pass another one on the road, happily chugging along. When these cars were new, I use to think they were expensive at $30k - The 325i was over $5k less ...but 30 years later, it is a testament to quality of Mercedes craftsmanship and engineering that so many are still on the road. In contrast, I rarely see an 80's BMW 3 Series on the road, and Audis of this era are now complete rust buckets or have joined their American and Japanese counterparts in the scrap yards. If you are new to the classic market and considering a 190e/d, do yourself a favor and pay up for the best rust-free example you can find ( look at all four jackports in the rocker panel especially); There is NOTHING more expensive to own than a cheap Mercedes :)

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Exceptional build quality, economical at close to 30 mpg highway/25 around town; Reliable, comfortable even for long trips with an enormous trunk.

Cons: Don't have a bad thing to say about these Baby Benz 190's - they do everything better than you'd expect.
