Happy 20th birthday, Mustang! And even happier 20th Mustang Anniversary, consumers! Ford celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Mustang model in style, with two powerful machines released midyear: a special 20th Anniversary GT and the Mustang SVO (Special Vehicles Operations). The SVO was quite a bit more expensive than the regular mustang, but achieved 175 horsepower and went from 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds.
The 20th Anniversary GTs were available with a 3.8-liter V6 or a 5.0-liter V8. Both were very powerful and popular among consumers. The turbocharged Saleen rounded out a nice line of trims for this year with 175 horsepower available to its drivers.

Sporty, cheap roomy interior for sporst car. T-Tops are more secure than a convertible. I owned a Corvette and the Targa top was a royal pain. T-tops are fast and easy on and off and don't take up much cargo space.Jul 27, 2014

Sep 12, 2010

Fast, handles great, but needs new rear control arms and some body
work. Has leather seats and fairly decent interior. hoping to put a
supercharger on it soon. Very fun to take down curvy roads. 325 hp and
28 mg is great. :)Mar 30, 2010

I love my car. It was my father's. He bought it when I was about 12. He'd been restoring it up until the day he left it for me, including a brand new engine that the machine shop and himself built, and that he put in. It's now a 306 with 351 heads that are ported and polished with a 3-angle valve-job. Forged crank, COMP Cam, Rhodes lifters, ARP bolts, Holley 750, Offenhauser 360 intake I've yet to put on, along with a set of shorties I'm about to put on. With a stock h-pipe, stock headers, and a Flowmaster 3-chamber 2.5" cat-back system, the car is loud as he||. Custom tranny, 3.55s in the back, the car moves. Oh yeah, custom interior too... all OEM parts from different years (steering column, seats, headliner, dashpad, etc.). I'm in love with the styling of the car because it grew on me watching my Dad love it and work on it for years. I was always a big fan of the '87 - '93 styling, as I still am, but for some reason, I've owned 2 '84s, an '86, and am still considering buying another '84-'86. CrAzY. Low-Pros all around, all black ext. w/no badges. These cars rock. Period. Oh yeah, believe it or not, with the jet setup in my carb., I get 15 mpg. Trust me, I clock it, gas it by the gallon, and I've NEVER run the car out of gas. Repair-wise, the sway-bar rusted off the frame on one side, I would say due to the fact that someone left it sitting outside the garage for a couple years through snow and everything. The performance is great. The major handling problem I've had is the rear end sliding out, even at slow speeds.Mar 13, 2010

My fox-body Mustang is used exclusively as a track-
day/race car. It has a complete Griggs Racing GR40 World
Challenge [non-SLA] suspension. It handles as well as just
about anything else on the track... I just need to improve
work on the dummy behind the wheel, and a little (okay a
lot) more horsepower would be nice! The fun factor with
my Mustang is off the charts!Oct 02, 2009

Um, it's not even close to stock... So yeah. 300 some-odd
horsepower and sub 3000lbs with me in it - it performs
pretty swell. 30mpg highway, 20ish city (as high as about
25 and as low as 8 depending on how I drive).
It rattles like crazy. It also has full 3" exhaust with a
Flowmaster race muffler dumped at the rear axle... so
that might play a role in the rattles.
It's an 80's car. The 80's rocked. Enough said.
Super expensive cost of ownership. Almost nothing in
repairs, but once you get the bug to upgrade you can't
stop!
I love driving it every day. By far the most fun car I've had
the privilege of driving. Jun 20, 2009

My mustang was equipped with a 3.8L throttle body V6 wich produced about 120hp :(
the car was a fun cruiser, the build quality wasn't amazing at all, the materials used for the car we're cheap and the metal was thin, there was a distinctive "Ka-chunk" noise when you closed the door.
I bought the car and planned on swapping a 302 or a 2.3t into it, it just never happened, i failed at that. heh.
about 20mpg highway and 15mpg in the city.
I'd buy another one only with a different motor.Mar 15, 2009

Wow does this little 4banger Mustang SVO have a lot of power. Great acceleration, especially when the turbo kicks in! I've done a lot of work to it so far and will continue to do more. It is very fun to drive! Any ford person would love it.Mar 11, 2009

This is the car that ushered in the computer age for American performance cars! It came stock with electronic fuel injection, turbo charger, intercooler, 5 speed manual transmission, leather interior, fog lamps, spoilers, wings, alloy wheels, high performance, low profile tires and four wheel disc brakes. The SVO could outrun most V-8s and deliver mileage of 20 plus mpg, handle and brake with the best of the day and the looks insured you didn't see yourself coming and going. This car is not the easiest to drive, but it is does reward a driver that masters it with a fun ride. It is the first American car with 4th generation computer controls and sensors that allowed for good mileage, great reliability, great performance and low emissions! The engine came with forged internals to withstand the rigors of turbo charging and mine has 140K miles on it and it still running strong. With minor modifications, it puts out 300 hp at the rear wheels with a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder motor. Did I mention that 2 teenagers have learned to drive using this car? Amazing. So much so that my first new car since I purchased my SVO in 1984 came as another Mustang in 2005!Nov 08, 2008

The biggest peace of junk ever built, i would feel cooler driving a pinto, mine had a 2.4 4cylinder, they are slow, bad on gas, uncomfortable, sound crappy, have no room, they are uglier than all get out, i was embarrased to be seen in it, and only owned it for 3 days before i traded it off on a wrecked neon lolAug 22, 2008

Raised in the car, I'm very fond of it. For it's time, the 175HP 245lbs of Torque 5.0 was a screamer and combined with it's lightweight and carbuerated intake it would haul some serious ass. Today the car is rusting and has been flooded by katrina....the engine is shot but the interior is fresh from a rebuild.Apr 06, 2008

I've always loved reading about these cars and how Ford tries unusual things at certain times in the past (SHO, Edsel, SHOgun). The car has adjustable KONIs all around, but the rears have to be removed to be adjusted. This is a pain, but they are in an easily accessed area. The motor is a gem, all American pig iron. Can easily boost it to 20psi and no problems(trust me i've tried). Takes easy to mods because it was made in 1983, they didnt have the technology like we have now and the 20+ extra years of people fiddling with them. Plus boosted Ford motors can handle pretty much anything you throw at them, just look at cobra motors, lightening motors, and GT motors. Feb 10, 2008

I'm not a big fan of the 80s Stangs but I always said my first car would be a Mustang and I was right. She handled pretty well but the power steering didn't work so it was a pain sometimes. I called her Chopper because she sounded like a helicopter when she ran because of the muffler being loud and banging on the car.Feb 04, 2008

White with black GT stripe on hood, t-tops, 5 speed. I had this car when I was in college at San Diego State. Loved it. I have great memories driving it back home or down to San Diego. Drove down Hwy 1 once. Bought a Deli sandwich in Carmel and stopped along the cliffs.
Great car for college. Loved the V8 although it's pretty weak compared to today's cars.Feb 01, 2008

This is the car 1 of 2,600 that Shelby sued ford over for using his "GT 350" name illegally. They were going to make a lot more of these special editions to celbrate the first mustang back in 1964 1/2 by making the 1984 1/2. This car features the 5.0liter manual, 5speed combination. All anniversaries featured an all red interior. HAHA I can't believe that facebook wouldn't allow my review on this? Do they think that picture is copywritten? LOL THIS IS MY CAR AT SAYERS DAM! Very good car, had an '83 convertible back in '85 was a good car. Bought an '84 convertible G.T. 2 years ago, oxford white eye catcher, have had offers for twice what I paid for it. Not for sale. Fun to have a 24 year old that out performs new cars that cost 10 times as much as I paid. Small block v-8, 5-speed, 9 inch ford rear end, good combo! Some Fords I wouldn't own, this is a keeper! Easy to upgrade, any later model fox body engine and drive train slips right in, ie. with a donor car fuel injection is easy. Fun to teach this latest generation with their rice burners about true performance.Nov 03, 2007
