The 1984 Monte Carlo seemed to represent a renaissance of sorts: a muscle car, emissions-standards-be-damned type celebration of horsepower. Sales for the base sports coupe soared.

The base engine remained a 229-ci V6 rated at 110 horsepower (In California there was a 231-ci Buick V6 option rated at 110 horsepower limited amount were produced). The standard V8 was a 305-ci rated at 150, and the standard SS was a 305-ci HO V8 rated at an impressive 180 horses. The only option was the unpopular 350-ci V8 diesel engine, rated at 105 horsepower.

Changes for the 1984 Monte Carlo included optional bucket seats in the SSs model.

I really like that this car is fun to drive and isn't the worst thing I've driven when it comes to gas mileage. Had it to drag strip last fall and was really consistant and had a ton of fun with it.Mar 01, 2014

Fun car for cruising, going to shows, racing your friends. Looks great and is fast. Paint in perfect condition, motor bright and shinny, lots of chrome, clean interior, great sounding mufflers, good rubber, t tops do not leak, great car.May 15, 2013

80s performance, other than GM turbo cars, was lacking. My Monte SS has an upgraded rearend, a T400 trans, and a 383 Lunati balanced and blueprinted stroker kit putting 310hp and 356lbs of torque to the ground. Gas mileage would be my only complaint, but it's a blast to drive!Mar 31, 2013

Really nothing bad about the car minus the gas consumpstion. I would like for the front seats to be better adjustable but I can take care of that with aftermarket seats. Other than that Im pretty happy with it all in all.Jan 23, 2012

-immediate takeoff, -instant throttle response, -takes hard turns well -accelerates through and out of turns exceptionally well, -corvette cam, -extended A arms, -rear spoiler (not a ricer spoiler, actually increases performance and downforce) -engine sounds beautiful (anything with 4 or 6 cylinders is incomparable in how they sound) -automatic transmission with manual override (instantaneous upshifting and downshifting, -when car makers today say a new car is fun to drive, they are wrong. this car defines fun to drive, even without a screaming fast engine Feb 14, 2011

All ratings are low. This car can be restored into a beautiful custom. The original motor is way under powered. It makes a great street or drag car. I want to install a big block crate motor. Watch my progress.Nov 26, 2010

small block 327, th350 trans, primered black, true dual exhaust w/ dual cats and flowmaster 40s (side exit), cragar soft 8 wheels, interior mostly stock besides some gauges (good shape), me amnd my father put the car together and have spent only around $2000 so far.Sep 13, 2010

fun car last of the rear wheel drive cars, like the style and the size ,looked better new but will live again .little low on power and little heavy to race the fud mousetang but still a nice cruiser.loved all my montes will always have one Mar 24, 2010

I live in Alberta Canada and just purchased a 1985 Monte Carlo,rebuilt this summer. Although it has the SS tagging ,I dont believe it is a Super Sport model. Maybe someone out there can help solve this ,...see pictures,...Oct 26, 2009

Performance- decent good brakes Gas mileage- 9 mpg Fun Factor- loud and can get sideways real quick Motor- 283 small block chevy stock Wheels- Z-28 off of a camaro Build- old motor leaks a tad bit of oil but runs fineOct 16, 2009

Performance - It runs good but goes through brakes like every two months. Quality - Its old so of course it needs repairs but the motors new about 5, 000 miles on it now. Aperance - I love the way the Monte Carlo SS looks in every year. Sep 20, 2009

A solid vehicle. Passed down from my father to myself. It could use a little work here and there but overall it's fine ride. The gas mileage is less than desirable but the engine itself is solid car. But it's mostly sentimental. Sep 16, 2009

the car is good performance appearance. it has a 350 swap and is tons of fun on a highway. the car has ig willwood breaks so it stops on a dime. with the 18in rims the car takes turns great and will get sideways when you want it to. te car has a new two tone paint job,and new interior with a compleat sound system.the car is a blast to drive.Jul 16, 2009

This car is FAST I have the engine built up mad. I havent drivin it in a few years and really need to get it out and burn some more off the tires, thats the problem with this car is that i just have to go fast when i drive it, its all or nothing and way fun when I do.Feb 06, 2009

Guys this car is amazing.It can be white, black or a blood red with pin striping down th side. And if you reallly want to get rare....look for a monte carlo ss aero. Only about 3000 were made. I would sell my left arm for it. Its my favorite car.Sep 30, 2008

i love my car. the 350 v8 in it will run forever. its a beautiful car and its performance is excellent! the interior is insane. its like somebody put it in a garage for 25 years and didnt touch it. the sound from that engine is like noise from heaven.Sep 16, 2008

I bought this car a couple years ago for $3,500. The guy was originally asking $5,500 for it, but my dad was able to talk him down. I have yet to get this car 100% on the road yet. It does run, but I still need insurance for it. From the little bit I drove it around the neighborhood, it handles great. Acceleration is outstanding with it's 305 V8 engine. The only thing I won't like about this car is how much it's going to guzzle gas...My uncle (who is a mechanic) estimates it will get about 15 MPG. If anyone knows anyone selling any older Monte Carlo SS, you should definitely buy one. These are GREAT cars!Aug 17, 2008

My dad bought this for my mom just before they divorced. Later she painted it purple and cruised the blvd. It was THE coolest car... back in the day anyways. She eventually sold it to my boyfriend who made one payment and then got missin'. Oh well, if he is still driving this then I bet he doesn't look that cool anymore!Mar 07, 2008

The weak sauce 305 ci motor that came in this car was dragged down by all the emissions crap they put on it; 185hp for a V8? The I4 in the Golf GTi makes 200hp. Other than that I think the G-body Monte Carlo SS is one of the best looking cars of the 20th century. Build quality was actually quite good- for 1984. By todays standards the interior is horrendous with big gaps and bad plastics. Aside from being underpowered the motor is also probably the first thing to break in most of these cars.Jan 15, 2008

So i got a 1984 monte carlo landau and was told it has a 305 5.0L engine in it. I just need to know if there is any way i can find that out for sure or not? Its all original, i just can't find any specs for a "landau" online or from anybody else i was only told that landau is for the vinyl top
