Early Vw Beetles —

The old VW would go ANYWHERE I wanted it to including down creek beds when I wanted to get away from someone. It ran on the smell of an oily rag and was great fun to drive. It's performance was that of any 1200cc VW motor - poor, but hey - what the heck. Braking was okay but not outstanding and handling, well lets not go there :-) It's build quality was pretty good overall and no rust whatsoever which is more than could be said for many other makes of that vintage. As a first car for a guy who was an 3rd year apprentice motor mechanic at the time it was an okay car that kept running and was cheap to run - what more could you ask. It was last of the 1200 motors as the 65 commenced the 1300cc motors which were a lovely motor. I would love to lay my hands on a nice 65 1300cc VW Deluxe beetle these days. One VW Beetle to stay away from is the 1962 Beetle - it was a nightmare both for the Rust it was endowed with plus a shocking motor. It had different valve clearances to the rest and always ended up with burnt out valves - not a nice look!

Pros: Economical, Fun to drive, reliable.

Cons: Poor performance and handling was only fair.

Chick Magnet — 1200cc engine is great around town, but not so hot on the highway. Fun to drive, handles well. Doesn't handle collisions very well, need new hood, fenders, front axle beam, right control arms, bumper and frame head. Didn't drive it long enough to break in the engine before the wreck. Factory spec. says up to 28 mpg hwy.

Pros: head room, leg room, cool factor.

Cons: can't handle sudden inertia changes affected by an outside force

Everyone Should Own One Of These Classics — This was the first car I purchased. The drum brakes were exciting at times. This car had lots of personality.

Pros: It's a piece of history

Cons: Just enough power to get you in trouble

My Favorite Car Ever! — Although this pic is not my car (mine was Indian Turquoise), my Bug (not Beetle folks!) was the best car I've ever owned. They are good on gas, easy to maintain, and cheap to fix.

Pros: Fun, cute, easy to drive.

Cons: The heat sucks, and I know some have been known to catch fire, but mine never did.

Let'er Rip — This is a VW bug-powered sandrail. It is single port, air cooled VW engine. The VW frame is replaced with tube frame that includes a passenger roll cage, engine roll cage and side rails. This vehicle is in the process of being rebuilt. More information about the stage and process of restoration will be provided shortly.

Pros: fast and fun

Cons: need to move to really enjoy, needs to be rebuilt

This Car Is A Joy In Every Way! — As can be seen from the comments above, I'm very high on this car. However, 1964 VW's lack airbages and harness restraints (I have recently added harness restraints in the front seats and added a roll bar 30 years ago to appease my family), and it may not be the best choice for a family car. On the other hand, my wife and I find it a truly wonderful car when the weather turns warm and the top comes down.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: This car has been a prized possession for the past 48 years.  It is beautiful to look at, remarkably reliable as a town car (I hesitate to drive it on the freeway, but only because everything else out there is gigantic and fast), and fun to drive...even after 48 years!

Cons: The car has a 6 volt power system, which means that  windshield wipers are a bit slow and headlights are less than blinding.  In the interest of full disclosure:  In January, 2011, the car suffered some front end damage in a low speed collision, but all was carefully and completely repaired by a professional auto body firm using original parts for replacement of major items (hood, right front fender).  The repair work is fully documented and can be made available for examination..
