Reviews Summary

This two-row midsize SUV is designed for traveling almost anywhere at almost any time. It shares its platform with the rugged Toyota 4Runner SUV and Tacoma pickup truck, and is equipped with a turbocharged hybrid powertrain better at supplying power than efficiency. Additionally, it is more affordable than it has been in the past, but still commands a premium over its primary rivals. The 2025 Land Cruiser is almost unchanged following its 2024 redesign, which introduced the current 250-series model (known as the Land Cruiser Prado overseas) to the United States.

Verdict: There is a lot to like about the Land Cruiser, especially if you don’t care about fuel economy. Our test vehicle averaged 15.7 mpg, falling well short of expectations. That thirst for fuel easily ranks as the worst thing about this SUV. Also, we recommend upgrading from the base 1958 trim level.

Reviews Summary

Honda hasn’t redesigned the Odyssey since 2018, but this minivan does get a few updates that will appeal to the Odyssey faithful. They include subtle styling changes, a new 7-inch digital driver display, an updated 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, modernized USB-C charging ports, and a smartphone charging pad. A new Amazon Fire TV rear-seat entertainment system also arrives for 2025. While appreciated, these improvements don’t rescue the Odyssey from its increasingly uncompetitive position.

Verdict: The 2025 Odyssey doesn’t offer a hybrid powertrain or an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option. The updated tech merely meets minimum standards and expectations. And in a new crash-test evaluation, Honda’s minivan earns a rare low rating. Certainly, the Odyssey remains comfortable, exceptionally practical, and enjoyable to drive. But it needs a redesign, and soon.

Look and feel

2025 Toyota Land Cruiser

7/10

2025 Honda Odyssey

9/10

The 2025 Honda Odyssey retained a familiar design that echoed its predecessors, offering a straightforward and practical aesthetic. Its interior followed suit with a traditional layout featuring buttons, knobs, and physical switchgear, which, while old-school, provided ease of use with bright white markings on matte black backgrounds. The Odyssey was available in EX-L, Sport-L, Touring, and Elite trims, with the base EX trim discontinued, raising the entry price to $42,220. The Elite trim, priced at $51,180, showcased a new Smoke Blue Pearl paint and two-tone leather seats, maintaining the high-quality materials expected from Honda.

In contrast, the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser offered a more rugged and retro look, especially in its base 1958 model, which paid homage to its historical roots with round headlights and basic equipment. The more upscale Land Cruiser trim, priced at $62,965, featured modern aesthetics, larger screens, and enhanced off-roading capabilities. Our test vehicle, equipped with the Premium Package, boasted Heritage Blue paint, 20-inch wheels, and a roof rack, bringing the price to $71,004. Despite its utilitarian design, the Land Cruiser's interior was more refined than the 1958 model, with Java-colored leather and advanced technology, making it feel worth the investment.

Performance

2025 Toyota Land Cruiser

8/10

2025 Honda Odyssey

6/10

The 2025 Honda Odyssey was powered by a reliable 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque through a 10-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. It lacked all-wheel drive and hybrid options, unlike some competitors. The Odyssey achieved an EPA rating of 22 mpg combined, with our test vehicle returning 21.4 mpg on a mixed driving loop and 24 mpg on a long road trip. Despite its fuel economy not matching hybrid rivals, the Odyssey offered a rewarding driving experience with its responsive steering, braking, and nimble handling, even in challenging conditions.

The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser featured Toyota's i-Force Max hybrid system, combining a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. This power was channeled through a full-time 4WD system, allowing for a 6,000-pound towing capacity. Despite an optimistic EPA rating of 23 mpg combined, our real-world testing yielded only 15.7 mpg. The Land Cruiser excelled as a daily driver and off-road adventurer, with features like Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control enhancing its capabilities. However, its handling on twisty roads was less impressive due to its suspension tuning and tire setup.

Form and function

2025 Toyota Land Cruiser

8/10

2025 Honda Odyssey

6/10

The 2025 Honda Odyssey excelled in maximizing interior space, accommodating eight passengers and offering up to 140.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The Elite trim featured comfortable power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, though taller drivers might find the seating position cramped. The second-row Magic Slide seats provided flexibility but required removal for maximum cargo space. The third-row seat was spacious enough for adults, and the Odyssey offered ample storage throughout the cabin, along with features like Cabin Talk and Cabin Watch for parental convenience.

The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, with its Premium Package, offered real leather upholstery and a power sunroof. While the front seats were comfortable, the second-row seats lacked support, and the running boards could be cumbersome for taller passengers. The rear window design limited airflow, and the center console's cool box reduced storage space. The Land Cruiser provided 46.2 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 82.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, though the high load floor required effort when loading heavy items.

Technology

2025 Toyota Land Cruiser

5/10

2025 Honda Odyssey

9/10

The 2025 Honda Odyssey received a technology update with a 7-inch digital driver display and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and smartphone charging, though the infotainment system's graphics and voice recognition were subpar. The rear-seat entertainment system, featuring Amazon Fire TV, proved challenging to use without the right cables, frustrating users accustomed to more seamless technology integration.

In the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, upgrading from the 1958 model brought two 12.3-inch displays with the Toyota Audio Multimedia system, offering wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and various connected services. The Premium Package added a JBL sound system, wireless charging, and digital key technology. The Drive Connect feature provided cloud-based navigation and a conversational digital assistant, which performed well in voice recognition tests.

Safety

2025 Toyota Land Cruiser

6/10

2025 Honda Odyssey

7/10

The 2025 Honda Odyssey came equipped with Honda Sensing, offering adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and more. While generally smooth, the system's lane-departure warning and adaptive cruise control could be improved. The Odyssey received high safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS, except for a "Poor" rating in a new IIHS evaluation.

The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser featured Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. The Premium Package added front cross-traffic alert and Traffic Jam Assist. While some ADAS features were occasionally intrusive, the front cross-traffic alert proved valuable. The Land Cruiser earned a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with mixed results in specific tests.
