But there is only one Subaru made to carry more than five people, and it’s the Ascent midsize three-row SUV. This year, Subaru makes one change to the 2022 Ascent lineup, adding a new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.

A midsize, three-row crossover plugged into the gap between the smaller XT5 and the hulking Escalade, the XT6 is built in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where General Motors also churns out GMC Acadias. The differentiation and execution are much better this time around, but the XT6 still strikes us as a hasty rush-job to capitalize on a popular segment.

Despite its premium materials and advanced technologies, the interior design lacked the distinctiveness expected in a luxury SUV, with analog gauges and an 8-inch touchscreen that felt outdated compared to its competitors.

In contrast, the 2022 Subaru Ascent, particularly in the new Onyx Edition, embraced the trend of blacked-out exterior trim, giving it a sporty and modern look. The Onyx Edition featured black 20-inch aluminum wheels, a unique grille, and water-repellant StarTex synthetic leather seats.
