Reviews Summary

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is unique in the automotive world. It combines the glitziness of the Cadillac Escalade, the off-road capability of the Range Rover, and the militaristic aesthetic of the Hummer with typical Mercedes luxury. For 2025, the G-Class gets a refresh highlighted by updated powertrains and tech.

Verdict: The new G-Wagen is rougher around the edges than other luxury SUVs, but it still delivers when it comes to off-road capability and creature comforts.

Reviews Summary

A year into its third generation, the Audi Q5 comes out swinging with screens, screens, and more screens in an attempt to hold its position as one of the bestselling compact luxury SUVs in the U.S. Audi customers and car enthusiasts, however, have panned the company's shift to a derivative exterior design and subpar interior materials while prices keep ratcheting higher. With thousands of test miles logged in Q5 models dating back to the first generation, we came to this Q5 review with an open yet highly critical mind, especially considering our Prestige test car’s roughly $65,000 asking price.

Verdict: Competent, not compelling, the Q5 meets expectations without setting the bar like it did in previous generations.

Look and feel

2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

9/10

2026 Audi Q5

5/10

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class retained its iconic boxy design, a nod to its origins as the utilitarian "Geländewagen" from 1979. Despite subtle styling updates like a new grille and bumpers, the G-Class maintained its traditional features, including a flat hood and prominent corner lights. The vehicle's robust doors and latches added to its unique character. Functional changes included a repositioned rearview camera and new A-pillar trim for the G 550 models. The interior was luxurious, with a sci-fi aesthetic featuring large round vents and ambient lighting. AMG models boasted sportier steering wheels, enhancing the driving experience.

The 2026 Audi Q5, available in regular SUV and Sportback body styles, showcased a clean design with thinner headlights and a wider grille. The District Green paint with the S Line Black Optic Package was striking, though the grille's honeycomb design appeared less appealing up close. The rear bumper's honeycomb texture looked better, and the real exhaust tips were a plus. The interior combined tasteful elements like sculpted seats and a four-spoke steering wheel with less impressive features, such as shiny black plastic and disjointed screens. The Q5's design changes, including a lower roof and sloping rear, altered its proportions, impacting its distinctiveness.

Performance

2026 Audi Q5

8/10

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offered a range of powertrains, including the G 550 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. The AMG G 63 retained its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, delivering 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Both models featured a mild-hybrid system and a nine-speed automatic transmission with permanent four-wheel drive. The G 550 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, while the G 63 achieved it in 4.2 seconds. The AMG G 63 introduced the AMG Active Ride Control suspension, enhancing both off-road and on-road dynamics.

The 2026 Audi Q5 came with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, producing 268 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Audi's quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission were standard. The Q5 offered rock-solid stability, a quiet cabin, and a comfortable ride. The Prestige trim featured air springs, although they didn't significantly improve ride quality. The Q5's fuel economy was competitive, with an EPA rating of 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined.

Form and function

2026 Audi Q5

6/10

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, while not as spacious as some luxury SUVs, offered a tall passenger compartment with ample headroom. Its compact dimensions made it easier to maneuver and park. Cargo space was limited to 22.6 cubic feet with the rear seats in place. The G-Class had a towing capacity of 7,716 pounds, slightly less than some competitors. The vehicle provided a commanding view of the road, with good forward visibility and trademark corner lamps aiding in navigation.

The 2026 Audi Q5 provided average headroom and legroom for a compact SUV, with cargo space measuring 27.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 56.9 cubic feet when folded. The standard panoramic sunroof added to the spacious feel. The Q5's towing capacity was impressive at 4,400 pounds. Standard features included heated power front seats, leather upholstery, and a range of tech amenities. However, the touchscreen-based climate controls and awkward door handles were noted inconveniences.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class featured the MBUX infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Two 12.3-inch screens served as the gauge cluster and infotainment touchscreen, creating a seamless display. The off-road menu and "Transparent Hood" feature were practical additions. Augmented reality navigation and voice recognition enhanced the driving experience. A Burmester 3D surround sound system was standard, with options for a dashcam and rear-seat entertainment system.

The 2026 Audi Q5 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen and an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster. Prestige trims added a third 10.9-inch touchscreen for the passenger area. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were supported, and the Bang & Olufsen stereo provided excellent sound quality. The Q5's technology included real-time road and traffic depictions, Park Assist Pro, and customizable lighting signatures. Audi Connect Care offered remote start and smartphone connectivity for 10 years.
