Reviews Summary

Redesigned this year, the 2025 Countryman grows in size but remains a small crossover SUV. Expressively styled, infused with parent company BMW’s engineering and technology, and packed with cheeky Mini quirks, the Countryman is available in Cooper S All4, John Cooper Works All4, and electric SE All4 model series, each equipped with standard All4 all-wheel drive (AWD). It can comfortably hold rear-seat passengers, carries a competitive amount of cargo, and remains fun to drive.

Verdict: With prices starting at just over $40,000, the Mini Countryman sells in entry-level luxury territory. However, anyone expecting plush refinement will want to shop elsewhere because the Countryman is decidedly rough around the edges. We begrudgingly accept its quirks in exchange for its personality, but many people likely won’t.

Reviews Summary

Like many brands, crossover SUVs are now Buick's stock and trade. The venerable General Motors division now exclusively sells crossovers, in fact. And for the 2024 model year, there's a new name in the lineup.

The 2024 Buick Envista is the company's new entry-level model, replacing the Buick Encore and slotting below the Buick Encore GX (which confusingly keeps that name despite there no longer being a standard Encore). The Envista shares most hardware with the redesigned 2024 Chevrolet Trax but, as with all Buick models, it aims for a more upscale feel than its Bowtie-badged counterpart.

This new model launches in three guises. The Envista Preferred is the base model, the Sport Touring (ST) adds sporty styling touches, and the Avenir is the range topper. We sampled an Envista ST in Ann Arbor, Michigan on some of the same roads GM engineers used to tune this new addition to the Buick lineup.

2025 MINI Countryman

9/10

2024 Buick Envista

9/10

The 2024 Buick Envista, while sharing its platform with the Chevy Trax, took a distinct styling path. Its sloping roofline gave it a "crossover coupe" appearance, a design choice previously reserved for larger, more luxurious vehicles like the BMW X4 and X6. Although a more traditional roofline might have improved rear visibility, the Envista's design was still considered acceptable. The coupe-like silhouette was paired with a new front-end styling inspired by the Buick Wildcat EV concept, featuring a split lighting design with thin daytime running lights above and real headlights positioned vertically beside the grille. This sleek design was a first for Buick, setting the Envista apart from its siblings, the Envision and Encore GX, which adopted similar styling as part of their mid-cycle refreshes.

The 2025 MINI Countryman, on the other hand, retained traditional Mini design cues such as wide-eyed headlights and a floating roof, but wrapped them in modern sheet metal. Depending on the model and customization options, the Countryman could appear as a conservative crossover or a performance-oriented SUV. The interior was stylish, with Vintage Brown artificial leather seats and a Petrol Blue fabric dashboard made from recycled polyester. The Countryman offered a sense of quality and style, making it a standout in a market filled with mundane crossovers. Despite some design quirks, like the faint gold tint on the trim and wheels, the Countryman made a bold statement with its Favoured style and 20-inch wheels.

Performance

2025 MINI Countryman

2024 Buick Envista

4/10

The 2024 Buick Envista was powered by a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. This powertrain, shared with the Chevy Trax, delivered a refined performance, offering smooth power delivery akin to a larger engine. Unlike its predecessor, the Buick Encore, the Envista did not offer an all-wheel-drive option, distinguishing it from the Encore GX. The Envista's suspension setup included a torsion-beam rear suspension for base models and a Buick-exclusive Watts Link rear suspension for models with 19-inch wheels, enhancing ride quality. Despite some nervousness on uneven roads, the Envista provided a quieter and more comfortable ride than the Trax, aligning with Buick's premium brand image.

The 2025 MINI Countryman Cooper S featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. It accelerated to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and had a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The Countryman offered different driving modes, including Core and Go Kart, which adjusted driving dynamics and infotainment display. However, the Countryman lacked refinement, with a clunky DCT and intrusive engine stop/start features. Despite these issues, the Countryman was quick and nimble, especially in Go Kart mode, but suffered from a lack of powertrain refinement, noise isolation, and ride compliance, making it less comfortable on rough roads.

Form and function

2024 Buick Envista

8/10

The 2024 Buick Envista was 14.2 inches longer than the outgoing Buick Encore, with a 5.7-inch wheelbase stretch, resulting in increased interior space. Rear-seat legroom grew by three inches, and shoulder room increased by two inches in both rows. However, the coupe-like design reduced headroom, particularly for second-row passengers. The Envista offered 20.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 42 cubic feet with them folded, less than the Trax and the old Encore. Despite its car-like design, the Envista provided good outward visibility and maneuverability in tight spaces.

The 2025 MINI Countryman offered seating for four adults, with comfortable front seats and upscale artificial Vescin leather. Visibility was good, aided by oversized side mirrors and an excellent surround-view camera system. The new Countryman was roomier than its predecessor, but the back seat remained snug. Storage was generous, with a power tailgate revealing 25 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 56.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The Countryman featured unique storage solutions, like a funky storage box on the center console, adding to its practicality.

Technology

2024 Buick Envista

6/10

The 2024 Buick Envista came standard with an 11-inch touchscreen and 8-inch digital instrument cluster, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, and Wi-Fi connectivity. The user interface was similar to the Trax, with easy-to-use controls and retained buttons for climate and audio. However, the center stack's tilt toward the driver made controls a bit of a reach for passengers. While lacking a head-up display, the Envista offered a decent amount of tech features for its price range.

The 2025 MINI Countryman featured a new 9.4-inch OLED touchscreen infotainment display, using the latest Mini operating system from BMW. It included cloud-based navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system. However, the display's unusual shape and reduced physical switchgear contributed to user frustration. The Intelligent Personal Assistant, Spike, was inactive in the test vehicle, and navigating the extensive menus was challenging. Despite these issues, the head-up display provided helpful information, compensating for the cluttered center display.

Safety

The 2024 Buick Envista's crash-test ratings were unavailable at the time of publication. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, and lane-departure warning. Optional features included adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic alert, similar to the Chevy Trax.

The 2025 MINI Countryman was well-equipped with safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. It also offered adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, Assisted Driving, and Assisted Driving Plus. The Countryman was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS in 2024, highlighting its strong safety credentials.
