Reviews Summary

If you’re in the market for a compact luxury SUV, you may notice the lack of domestic options. The Cadillac XT4 and XT5 are classified as a subcompact and midsize, respectively. The Buick Envision is more realistically a “near-luxury” compact SUV. That just leaves the 2021 Lincoln Corsair. Considering how underwhelming Lincoln's small SUVs were in the past, the Corsair is an unlikely contender. But you’d be surprised what a name change and a new platform will do for your prospects. For 2021, the Corsair adds a range-topping plug-in hybrid to the mix, giving it a leg-up on some of its rivals.

Reviews Summary

You may not have heard much about the Lexus TX, the company’s full-size three-row SUV. Introduced for the 2024 model year, it’s still a young’un compared to its competition, but has made its mark by offering a spacious interior and three different powertrains, wrapped in a stylish package.

In Lexus’ seven-model SUV lineup, the TX slots between the GX and LX—two body-on-frame models focused on off-roading. You can snag a gas-powered TX or one with a hybrid powertrain, but for this review we're focused on the 550h+ plug-in hybrid model. The PHEV offers the most power and best fuel economy, but also has the highest price.

Verdict: The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ is a great option for large families that need a spacious third row, but some of the technology comes with a steep learning curve.

2021 Lincoln Corsair

8/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair was introduced as a refined replacement for the Lincoln MKC, which had been based on the Ford Escape platform. Despite a facelift in 2019, the MKC's cabin felt dated, lacking the athleticism of its Ford counterpart. The Corsair, however, rode on the new C2 platform, shared with the latest Escape, but Lincoln managed to differentiate it significantly from its Ford sibling. This differentiation was something that other manufacturers, like General Motors, struggled to achieve with their models. The Corsair's design was refreshingly refined, featuring slab sides, blacked-out rear pillars, and straight belt- and rooflines, giving it a larger presence. Inside, the Corsair shared design cues with the Aviator and Navigator, including a flowing dash and floating center touchscreen, though it didn't quite match their fit and finish.

The 2026 Lexus TX, on the other hand, offered a variety of trim levels depending on the powertrain, with the 550h+ plug-in hybrid standing out with its standard panoramic glass roof and striking Matador Red Mica paint. The TX retained a large grille reminiscent of the older spindle grille design, complemented by sharp bi-LED headlights and rear LED lighting. Inside, the TX provided standard luxury features like multi-zone climate control and heated seats, but the material quality fell short of luxury standards, with basic plastics scattered throughout. The third row was notably spacious, accommodating full-sized adults comfortably. However, the redesigned door handles, which reacted to pressure rather than pulling out, seemed unnecessary, and the overall cabin could have benefited from more attention to detail.

Performance

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair offered a base 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, providing adequate power. However, the optional 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, delivering 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, offered stronger acceleration. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the 2.0-liter available in FWD or AWD, while the 2.3-liter was exclusively AWD. The Corsair featured unique drive modes like "Conserve" and "Excite," with the latter akin to a Sport mode. The 2.3-liter engine provided brisk acceleration, though there was some body roll in turns. The suspension absorbed potholes well, though road noise was noticeable. The Grand Touring trim introduced a plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine with electric motors for a combined 266 hp, offering 28 miles of pure EV driving and 78 MPGe in electric mode.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid generated an impressive 404 horsepower from its 3.5-liter V6 and hybrid system. The onboard seven-kilowatt charger allowed for a full battery charge in under three hours. The TX offered various drive options, including electric-only, hybrid, and gas-only modes, with Normal, Eco, Sport, and Custom drive modes. Sport mode increased throttle sensitivity, though it wasn't overly aggressive. The 550h+ provided a quiet and smooth ride, with seamless transitions between gas and electric power. The AWD system could distribute power between the front and rear wheels, and a Trail Mode helped maintain traction on slippery surfaces.

Form and function

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair featured a spacious cabin with comfortable seats and ample storage space. However, the pronounced lip when stepping in or out of the vehicle was a notable downside, requiring occupants to be cautious. The test model included reclining and sliding rear seats, providing impressive legroom for a compact SUV. The Corsair offered 27.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 57.6 cubic feet with the seats folded, which was average for its class. A power liftgate was standard, with a hands-free option available.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ offered standard luxury features, including multi-zone climate control and heated seats. The third row was spacious, with a recline function and ample headroom. A one-touch button facilitated entry to the third row, though folding the second row flat was more complicated. The front seats were roomy but lacked thigh support. The TX provided excellent cargo space, with 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 57.4 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 97 cubic feet with the second row down. All TX models could tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair came with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system running SYNC 3, featuring a logical menu layout and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Reserve trim added wireless device charging, a 14-speaker Revel premium audio system, and a head-up display with crisp graphics.

The 2026 Lexus TX featured a 14-inch touchscreen, though some features lacked polish, such as the inability to manually input satellite radio stations. The steering wheel buttons were multi-functional but not labeled, complicating their use. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, though connectivity issues occasionally arose. The TX offered a clear backup camera with an available bird’s-eye view and Advanced Park system. With seven USB ports and wireless charging, device power was never an issue.

Safety

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair came standard with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection, along with lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The Lincoln CoPilot360 Plus suite added features like adaptive LED headlights, surround-view parking cameras, and stop-and-go adaptive cruise control. The Corsair earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus rating with the high-feature headlights in the Reserve II package.

The 2026 Lexus TX included Safety System+ 3.0 as standard, featuring forward collision warning, Lane Tracing Assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. The adaptive cruise control worked well once set up, though the steering wheel controls were confusing. The TX 350 and 500h earned five-star NHTSA ratings, while the IIHS gave the TX an "Acceptable" score in the small overlap front crash test on the driver’s side and a "Good" score for the passenger’s side.
