Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

Reviews Summary

It is hard to believe that the little Subaru Crosstrek has been with us for 11 years, but here we are, looking at the 2024 model. It has come a long way since 2013, and in its third generation, we benefit from multiple engine options, a dazzling touchscreen, upgraded safety features, and a new Wilderness trim level that increases the tough little SUV's capability off-road. And, because this is Subaru, you can bet that it comes standard with symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD).

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10

2024 Subaru Crosstrek

9/10
The Chevrolet Trax returns for 2024 with a comprehensive overhaul that transforms it into a much more compelling subcompact crossover option. Originally debuting in 2015 as a straightforward, no-frills vehicle, the Trax stagnated until its discontinuation in 2022. The 2024 model marks a significant departure from its first-generation design, offering a larger body, improved styling, and modern technological features. It aims to attract buyers with its entry-level pricing while serving as a bridge for owners of discontinued Chevy small cars, offering a blend of car comfort with crossover utility across several trim levels, including LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ. On the other side, the Subaru Crosstrek has been impressing drivers since 2013 and enters its third generation in 2024. Known for its standard all-wheel drive and versatility, the Crosstrek has evolved to offer multiple engine options, a large touchscreen interface, and enhanced safety features. The addition of a new Wilderness trim emphasizes its off-road capability, cementing its position as a favored choice for those seeking adventure without sacrificing city driving comfort.

Performance

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2024 Subaru Crosstrek

7/10
The Trax's performance, rated at 8 out of 10, sees a switch to a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, offering a peppy drive and improved acceleration despite a decrease in horsepower and torque compared to the previous model. Its FWD-only configuration and car-like handling provide a nimble driving experience, with notable refinement in noise cancellation and ride quality. The Crosstrek, with a performance rating of 7 out of 10, offers a choice between a 2.0-liter and a more powerful 2.5-liter engine, with the latter now standard on the Wilderness trim. Despite the base engine's modest output, the Crosstrek benefits from a well-tuned CVT and standard AWD, making it versatile for both city driving and off-road adventures. Its fuel economy is competitive, though not leading in its class.
Form and function

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2024 Subaru Crosstrek

8/10
Both the 2024 Chevrolet Trax and the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek score 8 out of 10 in form and function, showcasing their strengths in accommodating passengers and cargo while providing a comfortable and practical interior environment. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax benefits from its redesign, offering an increase in size that translates to improved interior space. Rear-seat legroom sees a notable expansion, providing three additional inches for passenger comfort, with a slight increase in front-seat legroom as well. However, the vehicle experiences a minor reduction in headroom and shoulder room due to a snugger seating arrangement, a common trend in GM's subcompact crossovers. Despite these changes, the Trax ensures a comfortable ride, highlighted by its car-like driving position and excellent outward visibility, which differ from the elevated seating position typical of SUVs. Cargo capacity is enhanced to 25.6 cubic feet with the rear seats up and expands to 54.1 cubic feet with the seats folded down, offering a competitive edge in storage space within its class. The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, on the other hand, continues to impress with its practicality and versatility. Ground clearance and rugged styling hint at its off-road readiness, without compromising its utility as a compact SUV. The Crosstrek provides ample room for passengers, though taller individuals might find the front seat more accommodating. Cargo space stands at 19.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, slightly less than some competitors but expands to a more competitive 54.7 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded down. The interior design focuses on durability and ease of cleaning, catering to active users. Features such as a protective cargo tray, abundant cupholders, and a center console designed to hold large water bottles underscore Subaru's attention to the needs of outdoor enthusiasts. Both vehicles excel in blending functionality with lifestyle demands, offering spacious and thoughtfully designed interiors that support both daily commuting and adventurous activities. The Trax shines with its increased cargo capacity and modern interior design, while the Crosstrek emphasizes rugged practicality and outdoor readiness, making each a compelling choice in the subcompact SUV segment.
Technology

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10

2024 Subaru Crosstrek

9/10
In technology, both models achieve a 9 out of 10 rating. The Trax impresses with its standard and available tech features, including large touchscreens, wireless connectivity options, and an intuitive infotainment system. It successfully integrates modern tech into an entry-level package. The Crosstrek's standout feature is its large, vertically oriented touchscreen, which, despite some usability quirks, offers comprehensive connectivity and available wireless charging. Its integration of physical controls for essential functions mitigates the drawbacks of screen reliance.
Safety

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10

2024 Subaru Crosstrek

9/10
Safety ratings diverge, with the Trax scoring 7 out of 10 and the Crosstrek 9 out of 10. The Trax offers a solid suite of driver-assistance features, but its lack of all-wheel drive may concern some buyers. The Crosstrek's longstanding reputation for safety is expected to continue, bolstered by the standard EyeSight system and new enhancements like automatic emergency steering.
