Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

Reviews Summary

There’s no V8 under the hood of a Dodge Hornet. Instead, this compact crossover (or compact utility vehicle, as Dodge calls it) comes equipped with a four-cylinder engine or, in the case of the 2024 R/T trim, a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

As fuel-efficiency and low-emissions vehicles become more appealing to shoppers, the Hornet represents a major milestone for Dodge. If the company is going to remain relevant in an increasingly eco-conscious marketplace, this little crossover needs to be a hit.

Look and feel

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10

2024 Dodge Hornet

9/10
The 2024 Chevrolet Trax receives a comprehensive redesign that significantly departs from its predecessor, earning high praise for its "longer, lower, wider" mantra reminiscent of GM's design golden era. It boasts a distinctive appearance with its stretched dimensions, bold grille, and styling cues borrowed from the midsize Chevy Blazer. The Trax varies its appeal with the base LS model’s simplicity and escalates to the rugged Activ and sportier RS trims, each offering unique styling touches and wheel options. The interior design prioritizes functionality without sacrificing style, evident in its mix of practical plastics and interesting design features like a slim dashboard and prominent touchscreen. Higher trims offer more premium materials and finishes, albeit with some practical drawbacks like the placement of certain trims and controls. In contrast, the 2024 Dodge Hornet conveys the brand’s muscular styling in a compact crossover format, featuring bold front-end designs, distinctive lighting, and performance-oriented aesthetics. It offers a range of trims with varying powertrains, including an advanced plug-in hybrid option. The Hornet's interior impresses with modern touches, high-quality materials, and a driver-centric design. However, its backseat space suffers from a claustrophobic feel, a stark contrast to its otherwise premium cabin.

Performance

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2024 Dodge Hornet

8/10
Both vehicles are rated 8 out of 10 by CarGurus for performance, but they cater to different tastes. The Chevrolet Trax opts for a single engine choice, a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, focusing on improving acceleration while maintaining efficient fuel consumption. Despite its smaller size and reduced power, the Trax promises a peppier drive with minimal turbo lag and a more car-like handling experience. It’s clear Chevy aims for a balance between efficiency and drivability in the Trax. The Dodge Hornet, on the other hand, offers a broader range of powertrains, including a potent 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and an innovative plug-in hybrid option. The Hornet excels in delivering substantial power and torque, ensuring a spirited driving experience that aligns with Dodge's performance heritage. Its advanced PHEV system and sport-tuned suspension further enhance its appeal to enthusiasts seeking efficiency without compromising on power or handling dynamics.
Form and function

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2024 Dodge Hornet

6/10
In terms of form and function, the Chevrolet Trax and Dodge Hornet present divergent approaches to maximizing passenger comfort and cargo utility within the compact crossover category. The Chevrolet Trax benefits from its recent redesign, which contributes to a roomier passenger environment, particularly notable in the rear-seat legroom, even as some measurements like headroom and shoulder room are slightly reduced compared to previous models. Despite these changes, the Trax maintains a competitive edge in cargo space, offering up to 54.1 cubic feet with rear seats folded down. This is a testament to the vehicle’s increased overall dimensions, which enhances its utility without compromising style. Conversely, the Dodge Hornet places a stronger emphasis on accommodating front occupants, resulting in a backseat area that may feel more constrained. Cargo space in the Hornet is influenced by its powertrain configurations; while the GT trims provide up to 54.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, the introduction of the PHEV R/T variant sees a slight reduction in cargo capacity due to the accommodation of the hybrid system's battery. Nonetheless, the Hornet’s cargo space remains ample for various needs, ensuring that the vehicle remains practical for everyday use and longer trips alike. This comparison illustrates the manufacturers’ distinct priorities in design and functionality, with the Trax focusing on maximizing passenger and cargo space within its redesigned footprint, and the Hornet balancing performance features with practicality, slightly adjusting cargo space to incorporate advanced hybrid technology.
Technology

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10

2024 Dodge Hornet

9/10
CarGurus experts rate both vehicles 9 out of 10 for technology, praising their advanced infotainment systems and connectivity options. The Chevrolet Trax boasts major upgrades with larger touchscreens, wireless connectivity, and an optional digital instrument cluster, presenting a significant leap over its competition. The Dodge Hornet impresses with its large digital driver display and widescreen infotainment system, running on the user-friendly UConnect 5 platform, enhancing the cabin's modern feel.
Safety

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10

2024 Dodge Hornet

7/10
Both models score 7 out of 10 in safety, with comprehensive suites of driver-assist features standard. While crash-test ratings were unavailable, the inclusion of advanced safety technologies like automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control underscore both manufacturers' commitment to passenger safety.
