Reviews SummarySince its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only United States manufacturing facility. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that. Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Although the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup, updates to the remaining models include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features.
Reviews SummaryThe 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a solid choice in its rather limited class, with an easily attained 40 mpg, pleasant driving characteristics, and high levels of comfort. A new infotainment system helps its standing, as does a new off-road capable Woodland Edition.

The 2022 BMW X3 was available in four variants: sDrive30i, xDrive30i, M40i, and M, with the sDrive30i being the only rear-wheel-drive model while the others employed all-wheel drive. The 2022 update brought a slightly more aggressive exterior design characterized by a larger kidney grille, slimmer adaptive LED headlights, new vertical air intakes, and redesigned front and rear bumpers. The rear taillights featured a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs that echoed a "crab hands" trend seen in various vehicles, while larger redesigned exhaust tips and a new bumper complemented the horizontal lighting design.
The 2022 X3 came in nine finishes, removing Glacier Silver and Sunstone in favor of Brooklyn Grey and Tanzanite Blue II. Standard nineteen-inch gray aluminum-alloy wheels came matched with all-season run-flat tires, and a new optimization feature introduced a more aerodynamically efficient 19-inch wheel for improved fuel economy. The M Sport Package added larger front air intakes, sportier rear bumpers, new wheels, and M Sport brakes with blue or red calipers, while the Shadowline Package added more black-out treatment to various exterior parts for a menacing look.
Inside, the X3 offered a clean and efficient design, with an updated cabin featuring dark oak wood trim, anthracite headliner, eight-way power-adjustable front sport seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and new perforated SensaTec synthetic leather upholstery. Premium Vernasca leather was an option for the sDrive30i and xDrive30i models. Additionally, the cabin included ambient lighting with 11 color combinations, a panoramic moonroof available on all models, and several interior color choices, depending on material and model.
On the other hand, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid continued with the substantial, blocky design introduced in its 2019 redesign. The trapezoidal grille and angled bodywork gave it a robust appearance that had since been adopted by competitors like the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-50. Inside, the RAV4 Hybrid featured an angular-themed, multi-tiered dashboard with beveled cutouts for added visual interest. Although materials were about average for the class, many high-contact surfaces were padded, enhancing comfort. Notably, base trims lacked a leather-wrapped steering wheel, opting instead for a rubbery urethane wheel, which was thankfully upgraded to leather on higher trims. Build quality was strong, with the vehicle maintaining composure over rough pavement.

The 2022 BMW X3, across all models, came standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The X3 sDrive30i and xDrive30i models used a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, achieving a zero-to-60 mph time of six seconds. Yet, despite a carryover engine, the sDrive30i and xDrive30 models saw a drop in fuel efficiency to 23/29/25 mpg (city/highway/combined) and 21/28/24 mpg, respectively.
The more powerful X3 M40i sported a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a new mild-hybrid system, producing 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Although the mild-hybrid system intended to smooth start/stop operations and add 11 hp during sprints, it did not enhance fuel economy, which stood at 21/26/23 mpg—closer to the previous year's ratings. However, the system aimed to align with stricter emission standards globally. The M40i covered the 0-60 mph dash in 4.4 seconds, thanks to the additional power and sport-tuned features like an adaptive suspension, sport brakes, and a flap-controlled sports exhaust system.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid combined a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor/generator, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to drive the front wheels, and a second electric motor on the rear axle provided all-wheel drive. This powertrain generated a combined 219 horsepower, enabling the RAV4 Hybrid to reach 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, making it quicker than the standard RAV4 and competitive with rivals like the Kia Sportage Hybrid and Honda CR-V Hybrid.
Braking performance was seamless, with regenerative braking initially engaging to charge the hybrid battery before transitioning to physical brakes. The suspension ensured a smooth ride over moderate bumps and confident cornering without a sporty demeanor. Overall, the RAV4 Hybrid’s driving dynamics were competent, adequately addressing most driving needs without particularly impressing.
Performance aside, the 2022 BMW X3 excelled in comfort and practicality. It offered seating for five adults, though the middle rear seat was better suited for smaller passengers. The rear seats had a 40/20/40-split configuration, providing ample cargo space. With the seats up, the X3 could easily accommodate backpacks, photography equipment, and additional carry-ons if needed. A power tailgate came standard, with an optional hands-free opening available.
The SensaTec faux-leather seats were comfortable, but the upgraded Vernasca leather added a layer of softness and pliability. However, a notable complaint was the thigh-support cushion handle, which protruded and could potentially cause discomfort for some drivers. Nevertheless, the improved ergonomics were a welcome upgrade, with a redesigned center console, larger standard infotainment system, and easier accessibility to frequently used touchpoints.
On the opposite side, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid also offered generous interior space, particularly in the front seats, which comfortably accommodated larger passengers. Rear seats were adequate for average-sized adults but garnered slight criticism for their lower seat cushions, which could be less comfortable on longer trips. Cargo space behind the rear seats was 37.5 cubic feet, nearly matching the non-hybrid RAV4. This capacity was competitive, with Honda CR-V offering 39.5 cubic feet and Kia Sportage providing 39.3 cubic feet. Interior storage for personal items was a strong suit for the RAV4 Hybrid, with features like a wide shelf in the dashboard, a phone tray, large cupholders, and bins for additional storage, despite occasional constraints posed by chip shortages.
The 2022 BMW X3 featured BMW Live Cockpit Plus with iDrive 7 telematics as standard, which included a 5.1-inch color display instrument panel and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay compatibility, Amazon Alexa integration, two USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and other digital features. Options for a Live Cockpit Professional further enhanced the tech suite with larger screens and cloud-based navigation. Audio options started with a 12-speaker 205-watt HiFi sound system, with the M40i trim offering a 600-watt Harman Kardon surround system.
In contrast, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid received a significantly improved infotainment system for 2023, offering more modern graphics and intuitive menus. Most trims featured an 8.0-inch display, while higher trims upgraded to a 10.5-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard across all models, though the wireless charging pad remained optional. Connectivity included over-the-air updates and a WiFi hotspot, with the top trim offering a fully digital instrument panel. A six-speaker audio system provided adequate sound, while the higher Limited trim boasted an 11-speaker JBL system.
The 2022 BMW X3 was awarded a five-star crash safety rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, it had not been recently tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Standard safety features included adaptive LED headlights, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, active blind-spot monitoring, and various pre-collision protection measures. Optional packages added features like parking assistance, traffic jam assistance, and a 360-degree camera view.
Similarly, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earned five stars from the NHTSA for overall and side crash protection, along with four stars in frontal and rollover crash tests. The IIHS named the RAV4 a Top Safety Pick. Standard safety features encompassed Toyota's Safety Sense 2.5 suite, which included forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and more. Higher trims added a blind-spot monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system.
