Reviews Summary

BMW offers the 2026 X3 in two flavors: 30 xDrive and M50. The latter is tuned for performance, but the base X3 30 xDrive is so good that you might be happy trading the M50’s outright speed and sheer capability for significant savings. BMW redesigned this compact luxury crossover in 2025, and the only tweaks for 2026 make the base model look and feel a little more upscale inside.

Verdict: For this review, we evaluated the BMW X3 M50. It was terrific, but with a sticker price more than $15,000 higher than the rewarding X3 30 xDrive, it’s hard to justify the extra money.

Reviews Summary

With more range, more power, and improved technology, the Chevrolet Bolt EV returns after a three-year hiatus. It also claims the title of the most affordable EV in the U.S., but is due to remain in production only until mid-2027.

Verdict: The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV is an excellent choice for shoppers seeking an electric vehicle that won't break the bank. It may not be all that fancy or refined, but it gets the basics right when it comes to range and capabilities.

Look and feel

2026 BMW X3

5/10

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

5/10

The 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive started at $52,650, including destination charges, but enthusiasts often opted for upgrades, pushing the price to nearly $62,500. The X3 M50, however, began at $67,850 and our test model, with its Frozen Deep Grey paint and a suite of luxurious features, reached an MSRP of $79,100. Despite the high cost, the paint alone was a $3,600 investment, and while the Amber over Atlas Gray leather interior exuded luxury, the overall cabin quality did not justify the steep price. The X3's design was described as "monolithic" by BMW, with a cold, industrial aesthetic that was not universally appealing. The illuminated grille surround was particularly divisive, though the vehicle's nighttime lighting was praised. BMW attempted to enhance the interior for 2026 by adding standard artificial leather to the dashboard and door panels.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt retained a familiar look, with minor styling tweaks that made it resemble a conventional gas-powered car. The front end featured a thin slot behind the Chevy Bowtie logo, and the previous grille insert was integrated into the bumper. The Bolt straddled the line between a large hatchback and a subcompact SUV, with a single body style for 2027. Its tall and narrow design prioritized utility and interior space over a sporty stance. The RS model added gloss black exterior trim for a touch of flair. Inside, the Bolt underwent a more significant makeover, with a larger digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen. The push-button gear selector was moved to the steering column, freeing up center console space. The cabin was dominated by hard plastic surfaces, but the RS trim offered Evotex synthetic leather with red stitching for a more upscale feel.

Performance

2026 BMW X3

The 2026 BMW X3 M50 was equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, delivering 393 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. This power was available almost continuously between 1,900 and 6,250 rpm, providing exhilarating acceleration and a sensational engine and exhaust sound. BMW claimed the M50 could reach 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The M50 also featured performance hardware such as an M Sport rear differential, M Sport brakes, an Adaptive M suspension, and variable sport steering. The base X3 30 xDrive, with its 255-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, was also sprightly, reaching 60 mph in six seconds. Both models came standard with all-wheel drive. The X3 M50's turbo six was praised for its speed, and its 48-volt mild hybrid system ensured a smooth automatic engine stop/start experience. The X3 was reasonably fuel-efficient, with an official rating of 27 mpg in combined driving.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt featured a new 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron phosphate battery pack, reducing costs and requiring fewer rare earth minerals. A motor from Chevy's Equinox EV provided 210 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels, with a 0-60 mph time in the low seven-second range. While this acceleration was slower by EV standards, it was quick compared to gas-powered subcompact SUVs. The Bolt offered one-pedal driving with medium or high levels of brake regeneration. The ride was firm but not overly stiff, and the Bolt was agile on curvy roads, thanks to its low center of gravity. The 2027 Bolt had an EPA-estimated range of 262 miles on a full charge, an improvement over its predecessor. Charging speed increased to 150 kW, allowing the Bolt to recharge from 10% to 80% in 25 minutes.

Form and function

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

The 2026 BMW X3 featured heated, power-adjustable front sport seats wrapped in Veganza, BMW's vegan artificial leather upholstery. The front seats were comfortable and supportive, but rear passengers might find the seat cushion too low. The panoramic glass sunroof provided natural light, and storage was generous, though surface liners were absent. The cargo space measured 31.5 cubic feet, expandable to 67.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. A temporary spare tire was included under the cargo floor.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt offered an upright driving position with ample space for larger occupants. Taller drivers might have wished for more telescoping extension from the steering wheel. The rear seats provided plenty of headroom and thigh support, with a flat floor reducing the penalty for center-seat passengers. The Bolt's cargo capacity was 16.2 cubic feet, with a large bin underneath the floor for additional storage. The rear seatbacks folded flat with the cargo floor, and there was ample storage for personal items up front.

The 2026 BMW X3's dashboard was dominated by the BMW Curved Display, featuring a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Premium Package added a head-up display, a 15-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system, and several driving assistance systems. The infotainment system ran BMW Operating System 9 with QuickSelect, offering cloud-based navigation, Augmented View video, and more. However, real-world issues were encountered, particularly with Guest mode and Apple CarPlay.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt came with an 11-inch digital instrument panel and an 11.3-inch center touchscreen, running on a Google-based operating system. Apple CarPlay and standalone Android Auto were not supported, requiring Bluetooth pairing for personal music libraries. The optional Technology package added a surround-view camera system, a digital rear-view mirror, and a wireless charging pad. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with logical menus and quick responses. The Bolt's navigation system could help find charging stations and precondition the battery for optimal charging.

The 2026 BMW X3 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and more. The optional Driving Assistance Professional Package added advanced features like lane-centering assist and adaptive cruise control with hands-free traffic jam assist. The X3's crash-test ratings from the NHTSA were a mix of four- and five-star ratings, resulting in an overall four-star rating. The IIHS awarded the 2026 X3 its highest Top Safety Pick+ rating.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt's crash test results were not yet available, but it was expected to achieve high scores based on its platform. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and more. The optional Technology package added a surround-view camera system, a digital rear-view mirror, and traffic-sign recognition. GM's Super Cruise hands-free automated highway driving system was available for an additional cost.
