Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

Reviews Summary

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a solid choice in its rather limited class, with an easily attained 40 mpg, pleasant driving characteristics, and high levels of comfort. A new infotainment system helps its standing, as does a new off-road capable Woodland Edition.

2023 BMW X1

8/10

2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

6/10

The 2023 BMW X1 had a design that echoed its evolution from previous generations rather than a complete transformation. The stronger, more refined appearance maintained the classic X1 identity while incorporating larger, squarer kidney grilles that were less dramatic compared to the new BMW 4 Series. The front fascia was redesigned to accept more robust airflows. The door handles were made flush with the sides, similar to the i4’s, and standard LED headlights and taillights were introduced. The L-shaped taillights were given a modern twist.

BMW expanded the exterior color choices significantly for 2023, offering 13 colors, including new dynamic options like Blue Bay Lagoon and Utah Orange among others. The 2023 X1 also introduced larger optional wheels, with up to 20-inch wheels available, a first for this model. The xLine design added silver accents and high-gloss body cladding, while the M Sport Package incorporated body-colored elements and the Shadowline exterior package.

Inside, the X1’s cabin struck a balance between luxury and practicality, dominated by the BMW Curved Display. This large glass panel, accompanied by long, narrow vents, contributed to an uncluttered and premium feel without overwhelming luxury. The SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings were comfortable, and additional features from the M Sport Package enhanced the sporty look. The Premium Package added a panoramic moonroof, significantly improving the ambiance of the cabin. The floating center armrest and the aluminum-finished sculptural interior door handles also added to the sophisticated interior design.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid departed from its older, softer crossover styling in favor of a bold, blocky appearance reminiscent of Toyota’s truck lineage. The trapezoidal grille and angled bodywork framed the headlights, creating a rugged and substantial look. This design choice, innovative at its introduction in 2019, had since influenced other crossover redesigns.

Inside, the RAV4 Hybrid's angular theme continued with a multi-tiered dashboard featuring beveled cutouts. The layout was functional, with an infotainment touchscreen mounted atop the dash and a range of physical buttons for essential controls. Materials used were average for the class, with a mix of hard plastics and lightly padded surfaces. Some trims lacked premium features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, which felt downmarket. However, other trims addressed this with better materials, and overall build quality was strong, making the cabin feel solid even on rough roads.

Performance

The 2023 BMW X1 boasted a powerful upgrade with its 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder engine. The new dual injection system and revised combustion geometry allowed the engine to produce 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, significantly higher than the previous model. This provided a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds and a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, making it competitive with larger vehicles like the BMW X3. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission replaced the old eight-speed automatic, offering a smoother and more engaging driving experience, especially with the M Sport Package’s paddle shifters.

BMW also improved the Adaptive M Suspension and damping systems for better comfort and stability. Despite some stiffness in the ride, which added to its sporty feel, body roll was minimal, enhancing the sense of agility. Visibility was good, despite a narrow rear window, thanks to large front windows and narrow pillars. Fuel economy for the X1 was rated at 25 mpg city, 34 highway, and 28 combined, with premium fuel recommended.

On the other hand, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid utilized a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, driving the front wheels through a CVT. A second electric motor powered the rear wheels for AWD capability. Together, these produced 219 horsepower, enabling a 0-60 mph time of 7.5 seconds. The hybrid powertrain offered a slight performance edge over the standard RAV4 but fell behind the RAV4 Prime's more impressive numbers.

The RAV4 Hybrid’s braking system efficiently engaged regenerative braking first, transitioning to physical brakes seamlessly. The suspension handled bumps and potholes well, and while it didn’t offer sporty dynamics, it performed solidly in everyday driving conditions. The driving dynamics were calm and effortless, aligning well with consumer expectations in this class.

Form and function

In terms of interior space, the 2023 BMW X1 benefited from its larger dimensions. Front-row headroom measured an impressive 42.1 inches, with the rear offering 39.3 inches, surpassing competitors like the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40. Legroom was also generous, with the front row offering 40.4 inches and the rear 37 inches. The cargo space was competitive, providing 25.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 57.2 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

Despite criticizing the optional heated seats, which added $550 to the price but included a heated steering wheel, the arrangement of these options kept the overall cost manageable. The wireless charging pad, part of the Premium Package, was cleverly designed to securely hold the phone in place even during vigorous driving.

On the other hand, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid offered a spacious interior, with the front seats providing ample room for larger passengers and the rear seats comfortably accommodating average-sized adults. Headroom was slightly more than competitors like the Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, but legroom was slightly less. Cargo space was strong, with 37.5 cubic feet available behind the rear seats, which was slightly less than the non-hybrid RAV4 but generally competitive within the class. The rear seatbacks folded flat, though shorter owners might find them difficult to reach.

The RAV4 excelled in storage options, with a wide dashboard shelf, a phone tray in front of the center console, large cupholders, and a roomy center armrest bin. The ongoing chip shortage impacted the availability of a wireless charging pad, but the vehicle’s overall storage configuration was practical and convenient.

The 2023 BMW X1 featured the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8, integrating a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch driver information display. The system was responsive and user-friendly, although the navigation system required precise verbal inputs. Voice commands for climate control and the panoramic moonroof worked well, and the touchscreen was smooth, making traditional iDrive controllers redundant. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto came standard.

The BMW Live Cockpit Plus, standard in the X1, included BMW maps and Bluetooth interface, while the Live Cockpit Professional added features like a head-up display and augmented reality navigation, available through the Premium Package. The optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system enhanced the audio experience, and a variety of ports ensured ample connectivity options.

Conversely, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid received a significant infotainment upgrade, with modern graphics and logically arranged menus. The base models included an 8.0-inch display, while higher trims featured a larger 10.5-inch screen. Despite relatively small on-screen buttons, the new system reduced distractions with its placement.

Standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provided seamless smartphone integration, and the new system supported over-the-air updates. A Wi-Fi hotspot, remote monitoring, and vehicle control added to convenience, though the wireless charging pad’s availability was impacted by the chip shortage. Higher trims included a fully digital instrument panel, and the advanced 11-speaker JBL system on the Limited trim delivered superior audio quality.

Safety

For 2023, the BMW X1 introduced a comprehensive suite of safety features. Standard active blind-spot detection with an exit warning function helped prevent door collisions. The front collision warning system included pedestrian and cyclist detection with automatic braking.

The optional Active Driving Assistant Professional suite provided advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control with stop & go, speed limit assist, and lane departure warning. The 360-degree camera system and Active Park Distance Control enhanced parking safety, while the Back-Up Assistant retraced the last 150 feet driven to aid in reversing.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid received high safety ratings, earning five stars overall from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS. The Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite came standard, featuring forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, front, and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system. The digital rearview mirror improved rear visibility, especially with a fully loaded cargo area.
