2024 Acura MDX Reviews Summary

The Acura MDX is a mainstay of the luxury SUV segment, and it covers the bases remarkably well. Its well-rounded nature is perhaps because it shares a platform with the Honda Pilot (another fantastic family hauler) but for that same reason, it doesn’t offer the same cachet as a BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE. Whether you are on a road trip or heading to work, the MDX is comfortable, refined, and has space for the family and their gear. For 2024, there’s a new Type-S trim level, bringing a new level of performance to the three-row, seven-passenger midsize luxury SUV. But as we’ll get into in a bit, the MDX is held back by a maddening infotainment system that could truly be a sticking point to overshadow all other positive attributes.

Verdict: The MDX is a beautiful, safe, and cost-effective luxury SUV, and the new Type-S trim level delivers a higher level of performance. However, it doesn’t offer as much space as some of its competitors, and we wouldn’t recommend it to anyone easily frustrated by finnicky tech interfaces.

2025 Lexus RX Hybrid Reviews Summary

In 2024, the Lexus RX was the best-selling traditional luxury model in America. But is the midsize, two-row SUV’s popularity justifiable? Or does the RX sell on the strength of the Lexus brand and the model’s legendary reputation for reliability, a plush ride, and a quiet interior? The changes to the 2025 RX don’t help answer that question, unless you're looking for sportier choices, such as the new Black Line Special Edition shown here.

Verdict: Though it lacks substantial competition in the luxury hybrid SUV segment, the 2025 Lexus RX Hybrid is worthy of consideration. With hybrid, performance hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain choices, as well as a range of trim levels that cater to a variety of customer requirements, it checks a lot of boxes.

Look and feel

2024 Acura MDX

8/10

2025 Lexus RX Hybrid

6/10

The 2024 Acura MDX presented a striking exterior with its large shield grille, rakish headlights, and modern bumper design. Inside, it was high-tech but cluttered, with a center console full of controls that could be overwhelming. The MDX offered various trims, including the Technology, A-Spec, and Advance Packages, each adding unique features like ambient lighting, upgraded audio systems, and leather upholstery. The Type-S Advance package, which was reviewed, included a 26-speaker sound system and massaging front seats, providing a luxurious experience despite the busy interior.

In contrast, the 2025 Lexus RX Hybrid, particularly the RX 500h Black Line Special Edition, had a more subdued appearance. Its Incognito paint and orange brake calipers added some flair, but overall, it was less visually striking. The RX Hybrid offered three models: RX 350h, RX 500h, and RX 450h+, each with different power and efficiency levels. The interior was contemporary, with quality materials and ambient lighting, though some ergonomic issues were noted, such as loud climate control fans and uncomfortable seat cushions.

Performance

2024 Acura MDX

9/10

2025 Lexus RX Hybrid

7/10

The 2024 Acura MDX featured a standard 3.5-liter V6 engine with 290 horsepower, while the Type S variant boasted a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 355 horsepower. The 10-speed automatic transmission and available Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive System provided smooth power delivery and agility. The MDX Type-S Advance excelled in acceleration and handling, with adaptive air suspension and Brembo brakes enhancing its sporty feel. It offered multiple driving modes and a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds, making it versatile for various driving conditions.

The 2025 Lexus RX Hybrid offered different powertrains across its models. The RX 350h had 246 horsepower, while the RX 450h+ PHEV delivered 304 horsepower. The RX 500h stood out with a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine producing 366 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Despite its power, the RX 500h's fuel efficiency was lower than expected, and its adaptive damping suspension didn't fully meet performance expectations. The RX 500h excelled in straight-line acceleration but lacked dynamic communication, making it less engaging for spirited driving.

Form and function

2024 Acura MDX

8/10

2025 Lexus RX Hybrid

6/10

The 2024 Acura MDX provided three rows of seating, with the first two rows being comfortable and supportive. However, the third row was smaller and best suited for children. Cargo space was generous, with up to 71.4 cubic feet available when the seats were folded. The interior featured numerous cupholders and a somewhat cluttered center console, with a touchpad interface that was not user-friendly.

The 2025 Lexus RX Hybrid focused on occupant comfort with its two-row configuration. The RX 500h's front seats were snug but not entirely comfortable for long drives. The rear seats offered ample space and comfort, with optional power-reclining features. Cargo space was limited to 46.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which was less than expected for a midsize SUV. Interior storage was practical, though some areas lacked refinement.

Technology

2024 Acura MDX

6/10

2025 Lexus RX Hybrid

7/10

The 2024 Acura MDX's infotainment system was its weak point, with a clumsy touchpad interface controlling the 12.3-inch display. Despite this, it offered wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The placement of charging ports was clever, but the overall system was not intuitive, making it less appealing compared to competitors.

The 2025 Lexus RX Hybrid featured a more advanced infotainment system with a 14-inch touchscreen and a user-friendly interface. It included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a cloud-based navigation system. However, the steering wheel controls were distracting and difficult to use. The optional Mark Levinson audio system provided excellent sound quality, but some tech features were optional rather than standard.

Safety

2024 Acura MDX

9/10

2025 Lexus RX Hybrid

6/10

The 2024 Acura MDX came with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. It earned high safety ratings, with a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS. However, the infotainment system's design posed a distraction risk.

The 2025 Lexus RX Hybrid included Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, offering features like forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control. It also had a surround-view camera and Traffic Jam Assist. The RX received a five-star safety rating from NHTSA, but IIHS rated it poorly in some tests. The steering wheel controls for safety features were cumbersome, detracting from the overall experience.
