2022 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

Until 2018, Volkswagen seemingly ignored the fact that Americans wanted roomy, functional SUVs. But that year, a right-sized Tiguan arrived ready to challenge the leaders in the compact SUV class and the family-sized Atlas went on sale to wage war in the three-row SUV segment. Both addressed criticism that Volkswagen was out of touch by going above and beyond with regard to passenger comfort, cargo space, and utility.

Now, five years later, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is essentially unchanged following a substantial refresh for the 2021 model year. And though the 2022 Atlas remains a study in contrast, it is easy to understand why people buy it. Sometimes, size does matter.

2022 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a two-row crossover compact SUV with frameless, unibody construction, riding on a platform that was all-new for 2021 and shared with the soon-to-arrive next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. It comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD) and in four trim levels. FWD prices start at $26,700 and go up to $36,480 (plus options), equating to a $650 increase for FWD models and $750 increase for AWD models compared to the 2021 model year. Adding all-wheel drive costs $1,500 on any trim level. And those prices include a new, more powerful engine and a new transmission. At 33 mpg combined, the 2022 Rogue is the current leader in its non-hybrid compact crossover SUV class.

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2022 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas carried forward with minor modifications after significant updates in 2021. Volkswagen streamlined the lineup to include SE, SE with Technology, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line trims. Most models came with more standard features than the previous year. Pricing ranged from $34,355 to $51,505, plus a $1,195 destination charge. The SEL Premium R-Line trim, with additional features, brought the price to $53,790. The Atlas boasted a bold, boxy design with upscale elements like 21-inch wheels on the SEL Premium. However, the interior, while simple and premium in design, was criticized for its use of low-cost materials, including hard plastics that detracted from the overall quality.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue continued with the mature styling introduced in the previous year, sharing design elements with other Nissan models like the Pathfinder. It featured a V-motion grille, multi-level LED headlights, and a sleek floating roof design. Inside, the Rogue showcased a layered dash with contrasting colors and surfaces, creating a sophisticated look. The center console was notable for its electronic gear selector, freeing up space for storage. The Rogue's interior was praised for its comfortable Zero Gravity front seats and spacious second row, accommodating adults comfortably. The fit and finish were exemplary, especially in the top-tier Platinum model.

Performance

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

5/10

2022 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas offered a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine for the SE, SE with Technology, and SEL trims, producing 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine required premium fuel for optimal performance and had a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds. The V6 engine, standard on higher trims, delivered 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. However, the V6 was noted for its lack of refinement and efficiency, with a combined fuel economy of 19-20 mpg. The Atlas featured various driving modes and an AWD system with Active Control calibrations. Despite its size, the Atlas was easy to maneuver, thanks to cameras and sensors. However, the ride quality was mixed, with a busy ride on certain surfaces and noticeable body float on undulating roads.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue received a performance boost with its new 1.5-liter VC-Turbo engine, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This engine improved both power and fuel efficiency, achieving 30 mpg city/37 mpg highway/33 mpg combined. The Rogue's CVT transmission offered wider gear ratios, enhancing acceleration and responsiveness. The chassis and suspension provided a smooth, controlled ride with minimal body roll, and the electric power-assisted steering offered good feel. The Rogue's performance was lively and efficient, making it a more engaging drive than previous models.

Form and function

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

2022 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas offered a spacious interior with comfortable seating for seven. The V-Tex leatherette seating was standard, with genuine leather and additional features available on higher trims. The Atlas excelled in interior space, with a low step-in height and ample room in the third row. Cargo space was generous, with 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 96.8 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. However, unlined storage areas led to unwanted noise from items sliding around.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue provided a well-thought-out interior with numerous storage options, including bottle holders, cupholders, and various cubbies. The second row featured a 60/40 split reclining bench, and rear passengers had access to USB ports. The Rogue's cargo area offered 31.6-36.5 cubic feet of space, expanding to 74.1 cubic feet with the second row folded. The Rogue's interior was practical and spacious, catering to the needs of families and commuters.

Technology

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

2022 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas came with a standard Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, with an 8-inch display on lower trims and a 10.25-inch display on higher trims. The SE trim had a 6.5-inch touchscreen with basic infotainment features, while higher trims featured the MIB3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless connectivity, and Car-Net services. However, the user experience was hindered by slow loading times and a cumbersome interface. The navigation system was hit-or-miss, and voice recognition required a subscription for optimal performance.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue featured a technology upgrade with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 10.8-inch head-up display on upper trims. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, with wireless CarPlay available on higher trims. ProPilot Assist, a hands-on driver-assist system, was available, offering advanced features like adaptive cruise control and lane-centering. The Rogue's technology was user-friendly and integrated seamlessly with navigation and driver-assist systems.

Safety

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2022 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including automatic post-collision braking, Front Assist, Side Assist, and Rear Traffic Alert. Higher trims added adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and the full IQ Drive safety suite. However, the Lane Assist system had issues with old construction markings, and the Atlas received four-star frontal-impact ratings from the NHTSA, falling short of top safety ratings.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue came standard with the Safety Shield 360 suite, including automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. ProPilot Assist enhanced these features, offering Level 2 driver assistance. The Rogue received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, and the 2021 model earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.
