2022 Chevrolet Suburban Reviews Summary

After launching a redesigned Suburban for the 2021 model year, Chevrolet further enhances its biggest SUV for 2022. Most of the changes relate to technology and safety upgrades, including a larger digital instrument cluster on LT and above trim levels, standard Google built-in software, standard park-assist and lane-maintenance features, and available reverse automatic braking. In the powertrain department, the big 6.2-liter V8 is now available on RST, Z71, and Premier trims.

2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. Last year, this compact crossover SUV was the 16th best-selling vehicle in America, significantly outselling the company’s Altima midsize sedan and every other Nissan available in U.S. showrooms. Two years ago, Nissan redesigned the Rogue. Last year, it added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim, while the Rogue Platinum adds Amazon Alexa compatibility. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban

5/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban, with its 2021 redesign, adopted Chevrolet's full-size truck design language, giving it a commanding presence on the road. Its tall hood, long proportions, and large wheels contributed to its supersized appearance, sharing styling cues with the Tahoe SUV and Silverado 1500 pickup. The Suburban offered a range of six trims, allowing for customization in grille, fascia, and wheel designs. Our RST test vehicle, with its Cherry Red Tintcoat exterior and 22-inch bright-machined black-painted wheels, exuded a sporty look, enhanced by a monochromatic black grille and RST-specific badging. Inside, the Suburban provided a spacious cabin, with the RST trim featuring Jet Black perforated leather seats with Victory Red stitching. However, the predominantly black interior made the cabin feel somewhat dark despite its open and airy design.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, maintained a more conservative design approach, focusing on proper proportions and chiseled styling to convey a rugged sense of purpose. Available in S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, the Rogue offered a range of options, including a new Midnight Edition package for the SV trim. Our Platinum test vehicle came with AWD, two-tone paint, and a host of premium features, pushing its MSRP to $43,100. The Platinum trim boasted upscale upgrades, such as soft, diamond-pattern leather seats and a host of comfort features. However, the Rogue's engine character and some interior design choices, like the low-contrast key fob, left room for improvement.

Performance

2022 Chevrolet Suburban

7/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban offered a choice of three engines: a 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8, and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six, all paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The base 5.3-liter V8 produced 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.2-liter V8 delivered 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. The new 3.0-liter diesel engine provided 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, offering excellent fuel economy and a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The Suburban's maximum towing capacity was 8,300 pounds, and our RST test vehicle, equipped with the 6.2-liter V8, excelled in towing performance during an 80-mile test.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue featured a new turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with a variable compression design, producing 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a CVT, the engine powered the front wheels, with optional AWD available. The Rogue offered Eco, Auto, and Sport driving modes, with additional Off-Road and Snow modes for AWD versions. While the new powertrain improved urban and suburban driving responsiveness, it lacked passing power on the highway. The Rogue's fuel economy fell short of expectations, averaging 28.9 mpg in combined driving. The SUV's ride quality and handling were generally good, but the steering felt lifeless, and the drivetrain's character might not appeal to all drivers.

Form and function

2022 Chevrolet Suburban

9/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban excelled in interior space, accommodating up to nine occupants with the optional front-row bench seat. Most Suburbans offered seven- or eight-passenger seating, with a livable third row providing adequate headroom and legroom. The Suburban boasted 41.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 144.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded flat. The optional power-sliding center console and various storage cubbies added to its practicality. However, the Suburban's size made it challenging to maneuver and park in tight spaces, and the switch to electronic push-button transmission controls required some adjustment.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue served as a practical family car replacement, comfortably seating four people with room for a fifth. Our Platinum test vehicle featured premium semi-aniline leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Rogue's Zero Gravity seat designs provided comfort, though the rear seat lacked leg support. The SUV offered good outward visibility, but the low-contrast key fob design was frustrating. The Rogue's rear doors opened wide for easy access, and the cargo area provided up to 74.1 cubic feet of space with the back seats folded. However, some storage areas were unlined, potentially causing noise and vibration.

Technology

2022 Chevrolet Suburban

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban offered a surprising level of technology, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and Google built-in features on LT trims and above. The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with an 8-inch touchscreen was standard on the LS, while a 10.2-inch Premium System was available on higher trims. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot were standard across the board. The Suburban's audio system ranged from a basic six-speaker setup to a premium Bose 10-speaker Surround system on higher trims.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue used an older infotainment system with an 8-inch or 9-inch touchscreen. Our test vehicle had the larger screen, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a navigation system. The Rogue Platinum included a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a head-up display. However, the Alexa Built-in system struggled with voice recognition, and the infotainment system's functionality left room for improvement.

Safety

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban came with Chevy Safety Assist, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and more. Optional features included adaptive cruise control and a head-up display. The Suburban received a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with varying scores in individual crash tests.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including Safety Shield 360 and ProPilot Assist with Navi-link. The Rogue earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though it received lower scores in some specific tests.
