2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas underwent a styling refresh that included new front and rear bumpers, standard LED headlights and taillights, and a new grille design. These changes added 2.4 inches to its length, giving the Atlas a more extroverted appearance compared to its predecessor. The R-Line trim package further enhanced its sporty look with unique bumpers and side skirts. Despite these cosmetic updates, the Atlas retained its MQB platform, which is shared with other VW models like the Jetta and Golf. The interior of the Atlas was minimalist, with a focus on functionality, though the material quality, particularly in the mid-level SE with Technology trim, was below average, featuring cheap plastics and faux wood and metal trim.

In contrast, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover's redesign was more evolutionary, maintaining its broad, rounded face and large sheet metal surfaces. The most notable change was at the rear, where thin LED strips replaced the old square taillights. The Range Rover emphasized its size, especially in the long-wheelbase version, which added eight inches to its length. Inside, the Range Rover was simplified with fewer buttons and a larger touchscreen, giving it a modern look. The materials used were of excellent quality, with premium leather and rich wood trim, creating a luxurious atmosphere. The Range Rover's interior was solid and creak-free, even on rough roads, offering a level of refinement that surpassed many of its competitors.

Performance

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offered two engine options: a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-liter VR6 engine with 276 hp and 266 lb-ft. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with front-wheel drive standard and 4Motion all-wheel drive optional. The driving experience with the base engine and AWD was underwhelming, with adequate acceleration but rough shifts and poor ride quality. The Atlas had a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds with the VR6 engine, while the four-cylinder models were limited to 2,000 pounds. Fuel economy was unimpressive, with the four-cylinder achieving 22 mpg combined with FWD and the VR6 getting 19 mpg combined.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered two powertrains: a P400 turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with a 48-volt mild hybrid system producing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft, and a P530 twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD. The P400 powertrain provided effortless acceleration, with a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile for its size, with well-managed body roll and a calm, composed driving experience. The standard rear-wheel-steering improved maneuverability, and the Terrain Response system optimized off-road capability. The Range Rover delivered a smooth ride with minimal noise, making it one of the most comfortable luxury SUVs available.

Form and function

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offered average passenger and cargo space for its segment, with 96.8 cubic feet behind the front seats and 20.6 cubic feet with all seats up. It provided more third-row legroom than most competitors, but at the expense of second-row legroom. The second-row bench seat was uncomfortable, with thin cushions. The Atlas featured a tall driving position, but forward visibility was limited. It had up to 17 cupholders and five USB ports, with an optional wireless charging pad. Parking sensors and low-speed automatic braking were standard, with active park assist available on higher trims.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover provided ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats were cushioned for comfort, with available massage functions. Storage options included two glove boxes, a wireless charging pad, and a large center console bin. The second row offered power recline and sliding adjustments, with climate controls and USB-C ports. The optional third row was accessible via a button, though headroom was limited for adults. Cargo space was 17.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 93 cubic feet with the seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable air suspension aided loading.

Technology

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas came with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. The base S trim had a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while other models featured an 8-inch screen. Higher trims offered the Digital Cockpit with a 10.3-inch display. The Atlas was set to receive the MIBIII infotainment system later in the year, with improved features. The SE with Technology trim had an 8-inch screen with plain displays. A 12-speaker Fender audio system was available on higher trims. A 4G LTE WiFi hotspot was new for 2021, supporting up to four devices.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover featured a 13-inch touchscreen with the new Pivi Pro infotainment system, offering sharper graphics and quicker responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system provided excellent sound quality, with a 35-speaker upgrade available. Other tech features included Amazon Alexa integration, remote automated parking, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and remote control via a smartphone app.

Safety

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

6/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas received top ratings in IIHS crash tests, except for a "marginal" rating for child-seat anchors and mixed headlight ratings. The 2020 model received a five-star overall rating from NHTSA. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist available on higher trims. The Atlas was set to receive more advanced driver aids later in the year.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover had not been rated by NHTSA or IIHS. Standard safety features included frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system. The surround-view cameras were particularly useful for off-roading. Some rivals offered additional safety features, which might be added to future models.
