2020 Toyota Camry Reviews Summary

If you can't beat them, join them. That seems to be Toyota's philosophy in updating the eighth generation of the Camry for the 2020 model year. This latest version of the perennial best seller debuted in 2017 as a 2018 model—and promptly lost its sales crown to Toyota's own RAV4 crossover SUV. As buyers continue to defect from cars, Toyota hopes to entice more shoppers to stick with its midsize sedan by offering all-wheel drive on the Camry for the first time since 1991. Also new for 2020 is the Camry TRD, a sportier version with a 301-horsepower V6 engine that makes its case to a buyer who might never have considered a Camry.

2021 MINI Cooper Reviews Summary

The MINI Cooper is a funky little car with a big attitude that screams nostalgia. The BMW-owned automaker marches to the beat of its own drum, and while the MINI Cooper isn’t the most practical or best equipped car in its class, its unique styling and classic fun-loving attitude will be just what the doctor ordered for many buyers.

The Cooper is available in body styles that include the two-door Mini Cooper Hardtop, a four-door hardtop, and a convertible. Other variants of the Cooper go by different names, such as the larger MINI Countryman crossover and the Clubman wagon.

Updates for the 2021 model year includes several new features and the re-addition of a manual transmission option. Two new special editions are also available: MINI Sidewalk and John Cooper Works GP.

The MINI Cooper's odd place in the market pits it against several competitors from various classes. New car buyers may cross-shop the Mazda MX-5 Miata, BMW 2 Series, Kia Soul, Kia Seltos, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR86, Hyundai Kona, or Mazda MX-30 when making a buying decision on the MINI. Prior to their discontinuation, the Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit were solid Mini competitors as well.

Look and feel

2020 Toyota Camry

7/10

2021 MINI Cooper

5/10

The 2020 Toyota Camry had a renewed focus on quality and appeal, aiming to reclaim its reputation for reliability and value. Its styling was more expressive than ever, with a bold front fascia and taut lines that gave it a sporty look. The interior featured uniformly nice materials and a driver-focused dashboard, making even the base trims feel upscale. The TRD model added red trim accents, including bright red seatbelts, enhancing its sporty appeal. Despite these improvements, the Camry remained a mainstream sedan with a starting price of $25,380, not quite reaching the luxury of a Lexus or the sportiness of a BMW.

The 2021 MINI Cooper, on the other hand, was instantly recognizable with its iconic rounded shape and wide variety of color choices. Customization options for the exterior and top, as well as unique graphics like the Union Jack flag, set it apart in the subcompact car space. Inside, the MINI continued its unique design language with plenty of circles and rounded shapes, including a funky infotainment touchscreen. While the cabin was high quality, it lacked space, especially in the back seats, which were best used for cargo rather than passengers.

Performance

2020 Toyota Camry

7/10

2021 MINI Cooper

7/10

The 2020 Toyota Camry offered four distinct powertrains: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with FWD, the same engine with AWD, a FWD 3.5-liter V6, and a hybrid powertrain. The 3.5-liter V6 produced 301 horsepower and was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, providing a smooth and powerful driving experience. However, it lacked excitement in the TRD model. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with 203 hp (206 in XSE trim), was lighter and made the sporty XSE trim fun to drive. The TRD model had a specially tuned suspension, beefed-up brakes, and high-performance tires, but its ride was too stiff for the average driver. The AWD system, similar to that in the RAV4, could send up to half of the engine's 184 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, improving traction in slippery conditions. The FWD Camry had an EPA combined fuel economy rating of 31 mpg, dropping to 28 mpg with AWD, and 26 mpg for V6 models.

The 2021 MINI Cooper offered four powertrain options: a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder with 134 hp, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 189 hp for the Cooper S, a 228-hp turbo-four for the John Cooper Works (JCW), and a 301-hp turbo-four for the John Cooper Works GP. All models had FWD, with a six-speed manual standard for the Cooper and Cooper S, and a seven-speed automatic available. The JCW GP had an eight-speed automatic. The MINI felt spritely and energetic, especially with the turbocharged four-cylinder engines, which provided noticeable power at highway speeds. The JCW GP model offered the best acceleration. However, all models had a stiff ride, making long drives tiresome. The Cooper was agile and fun to drive, but not particularly comfortable. The most efficient MINI Cooper was the Convertible, with an EPA rating of 28/37/31 mpg.

Form and function

2020 Toyota Camry

7/10

2021 MINI Cooper

4/10

The 2020 Toyota Camry was easy to get into and drive, with most controls falling immediately to hand. The front seats offered increased legroom and hip room compared to the previous generation. However, the rear seat had less legroom, and the overall passenger volume and trunk size were smaller than competitors like the Honda Accord. The trunk offered 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space. The addition of AWD did not compromise the trunk or passenger space, thanks to modifications in the floor structure and fuel tank.

The 2021 MINI Cooper's interior was more suited for cargo storage than passengers, especially in the rear seat. The front seats were comfortable with decent head and legroom, but taller drivers might find the dash shape problematic for knee placement. Interior storage was tight, with a small center console and door pockets. The Cooper Hatchbacks offered decent cargo space with the back seats folded down, while Convertible models had a small cargo hold under the folding top compartment.

Technology

2020 Toyota Camry

7/10

2021 MINI Cooper

5/10

The 2020 Toyota Camry added Android Auto to its standard features, joining Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and a three-month trial of SiriusXM satellite radio. The standard infotainment system felt dated, but the touchscreen was functional and quick to respond. The base screen was 7 inches, with an optional 8-inch upgrade. A single USB-A port was available for phone use, with additional USB-A charging ports in the center console. An optional Qi wireless charging pad was available, but USB-C ports were not. A three-month trial of WiFi Connect and a one-year trial of Remote Connect were included with higher trims. Higher trims also featured a 7-inch multi-information display and an optional 10-inch head-up display.

The 2021 MINI Cooper's base screen was a 6.5-inch unit, with an optional 8.8-inch unit that included SiriusXM satellite radio and Apple CarPlay. Optional features included a Harman Kardon sound system, automatic climate controls, and LED headlights. MINI included more physical controls, improving the technology experience. However, Android Auto was not available, leaving many users to rely on Bluetooth. The infotainment system used BMW's software, with a physical iDrive controller in the center console, which was difficult to reach and use due to the tight space.

Safety

2020 Toyota Camry

9/10

2021 MINI Cooper

5/10

The 2020 Toyota Camry included Toyota Safety Sense, with features like a pre-collision system, dynamic radar adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. A one-year trial of Safety Connect was included, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert was optional. The Camry had 10 airbags and standard safety features like stability control and a backup camera. Higher trims offered Bird's Eye View for a 360-degree view while parking. The Camry received a five-star rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS. There was one NHTSA recall for leaking engine coolant, affecting up to 44,191 cars.

The 2021 MINI Cooper did not receive a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS, scoring "Good" in crash tests but "Acceptable" or "Poor" for headlights. The front crash prevention systems earned "Advanced" scores, and the LATCH system was rated "Marginal." NHTSA had not rated the 2021 model. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rear parking sensors. Optional features included front parking sensors, a parking assistance system, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning.
