2020 Subaru Outback Reviews Summary

Subaru kept the wagon vibes rolling while the rest of the world fell in love with SUVs and crossovers. And, although the 2020 Outback is technically a midsize crossover, one look will have you remembering summer drives in an overstuffed station wagon down a busy highway, whether you actually took those trips or not. And that’s not a bad thing. The Outback has always provided utility, performance, and looks, and those things have made it Subaru’s top-selling model. With the updates for this sixth generation, I wouldn’t be surprised to see America falling in love with the station wagon again.

2021 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Parent company Hyundai Motor Group announced the formation of a new luxury brand—Genesis—in 2015, and it launched its first sedans—the G90 and the G80—in late 2016, followed by the G70 sedan in 2018. The 2020 Genesis GV80 is the brand’s first SUV, sharing a platform with the second-generation G80. A three-row luxury crossover vehicle, the GV80 promises to open a whole new audience for Genesis as it strives to compete in the ever-growing luxury SUV market.

2020 Subaru Outback

8/10

2021 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2020 Subaru Outback was a testament to Subaru's commitment to incremental improvement while maintaining its core strengths of utility, safety, and performance. The sixth-generation Outback was built on Subaru’s Global Platform, boasting a 70% increase in structural rigidity. The base 2.5-liter engine, although appearing similar to its predecessor, was redesigned with 90% new parts, offering 182 horsepower. For those seeking more power, the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine from the Ascent was available in higher trims. Externally, changes were subtle, with noticeable updates to the head- and taillights. Inside, the Outback featured an 11.6-inch touchscreen on all but the base trim, and introduced DriverFocus technology, which used infrared monitoring to alert distracted drivers and adjust settings based on facial recognition. The Outback was available in seven trims, starting at an MSRP of $26,645, with a range of features and options that catered to various preferences and needs.

The 2021 Genesis GV80, as Genesis' first SUV, was a fresh design that balanced innovation with the brand's emerging signature style. It featured a two-box design with a long hood and a distinctive grille and headlamp arrangement that defined the Genesis look. The GV80's exterior was marked by elegant lines and high-quality finishes, with wheel options ranging from 19 to 22 inches. Inside, the GV80 offered a luxurious experience with a sleek, uncluttered dashboard and a 14.5-inch high-definition display. The cabin was adorned with authentic materials like real wood and leather, providing a premium feel. The GV80's interior design emphasized spaciousness and comfort, with advanced technology integrated seamlessly into the driving experience.

The 2020 Subaru Outback offered two engine options: a 2.5-liter engine with 182 horsepower and a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The turbo engine allowed the Outback to accelerate to 60 mph in about 7 seconds. Both engines were paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that mimicked a traditional automatic transmission, minimizing the typical CVT drawbacks. Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system was a standout feature, providing consistent power delivery and enhanced stability. The Outback's off-road capabilities were supported by 8.7 inches of ground clearance and an upgraded X-Mode on the Onyx XT trim, making it suitable for various terrains.

The 2021 Genesis GV80 offered two engine choices: a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The GV80's eight-speed automatic transmission came with paddle shifters, and the V6 models featured standard all-wheel drive. The GV80's suspension system included electronically-controlled suspension with road preview on 3.5T models, enhancing ride comfort by anticipating road conditions. The GV80's performance was characterized by its smooth and powerful V6 engine, while the four-cylinder engine provided adequate power for most driving situations.

Form and function

2021 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2020 Subaru Outback excelled in functionality, offering 32.5 cubic feet of trunk space, expandable to 75.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The interior was spacious, accommodating taller passengers comfortably, and the design prioritized visibility with excellent sightlines. The Outback's proportions contributed to its stability and handling, while maintaining a compact exterior appearance. Subaru's focus on visibility was evident, although the rear quarters presented a minor blind spot issue.

The 2021 Genesis GV80's interior was a blend of technology and luxury, featuring a rotary gear selector and a multimedia controller with advanced functionality. The second row was spacious and comfortable, with available power seats and window shades. The GV80 offered a third row on specific models, increasing passenger capacity to seven. The interior design emphasized ergonomics and user-friendly controls, creating a sophisticated and comfortable environment for occupants.

Technology

The 2020 Subaru Outback featured an 11.6-inch touchscreen that was visually appealing and mostly intuitive. However, the system suffered from lag, affecting navigation and other functions. The camera resolution was also lacking, detracting from the overall experience. Despite these issues, the system had potential with its large display and user-friendly layout.

The 2021 Genesis GV80's infotainment system was a highlight, featuring a 14.5-inch HD screen with user-configurable displays. It supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and offered cloud-connected services with over-the-air updates. The GV80's system included a digital key function for Android users, and provided a comprehensive suite of connected services. The audio system options ranged from a standard 12-speaker setup to a premium 21-speaker Lexicon system, enhancing the in-car entertainment experience.

Safety

2021 Genesis GV80

7/10

The 2020 Subaru Outback's safety features were comprehensive, with standard all-wheel drive and a suite of safety technologies. However, the DriverFocus system was criticized for its frequent and inaccurate alerts. Subaru's EyeSight system, while standard, had limitations in certain conditions, affecting its reliability.

The 2021 Genesis GV80 was equipped with an extensive array of safety features, including 10 airbags and advanced driver-assistance systems. The GV80's adaptive cruise control with machine learning and highway-driving assist provided a high level of automation and safety. Although not yet rated by safety organizations, Genesis aimed for top safety ratings, reflecting their commitment to safety.
