2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Reviews Summary

The original Land Rover Range Rover revolutionized the SUV game by combining off-road capability with a modicum of civility. Land Rover is now trying to milk that success by creating a “family” of Range Rover models, including some with more car-like styling and character.

That’s where the Land Rover Range Rover Velar comes in. Launched for the 2018 model year, it sits above the Range Rover Evoque, but below the Range Rover Sport, in size and price (the traditional Range Rover remains the brand’s flagship). Land Rover chose the Velar name as a nod to the original 1969 Range Rover prototypes, which were badged Velar to hide their origin.

The main change for the 2020 model year is the addition of an SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition to the lineup. It’s a one-year-only special that packs a V8 engine instead of the usual V6 or turbo-four. This is the version we tested as, aside from what’s under the hood, it is representative of other Velar models.

2021 Kia Sportage Reviews Summary

The 2021 Kia Sportage continues on the scene as a compact crossover competent enough to stand up against a bevy of competitors, particularly when equipped with is turbocharged four-cylinder. But with a new, redesigned Sportage coming in 2023, and a compelling option in the Kia Seltos sitting below it in the lineup, is the 2021 model still worth consideration?

Look and feel

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

9/10

2021 Kia Sportage

7/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar presented a balanced design, neither too compact like the Evoque nor as large as the traditional Range Rover. Its low roof and steeply-raked windshield gave it a unique silhouette, distinct from the upright stance of its siblings. The Velar maintained an intimidating presence with its broad front end, while its short overhangs hinted at performance capabilities. The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition added sportier elements, such as larger air intakes and quad exhaust tips, enhancing its aggressive look. Inside, the Velar's high-quality leather and metal trim created a luxurious environment, with a cockpit-like feel that made drivers feel enveloped by the vehicle.

In contrast, the 2021 Kia Sportage featured a design that some might describe as "frog-like" due to its tiger-nose grille and bulbous headlights, though Kia preferred to call it "Euro-focused." This two-row crossover SUV was ideal for city driving, thanks to its short wheelbase and overhangs. The interior was centered around an 8-inch touchscreen display, flanked by air vents and physical controls for ease of use. While not as tech-forward as some of its competitors, the Sportage's cabin was comfortable and functional, with a pleasant atmosphere for both driver and passengers.

Performance

2021 Kia Sportage

8/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, particularly in its SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, marked a shift towards performance with the introduction of a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine, producing 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive, allowed the Velar to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 177 mph. Despite these impressive figures, it wasn't the fastest in its class. The Velar's aluminum platform provided a solid and refined driving experience, though it felt large on tight roads. The base model offered a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with 247 hp, while a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 was available in two power outputs. Off-road capabilities were supported by Land Rover's Terrain Response system, although the Velar's single-speed transfer case limited its off-road prowess.

The 2021 Kia Sportage offered a choice between a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine, delivering 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine in the SX Turbo trim, producing 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were managed by a six-speed automatic transmission, with options for front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Fuel economy varied, with the 2.4-liter engine achieving up to 30 mpg on the highway in FWD models. The Sportage's suspension provided a smooth ride, though its steering and tire grip left room for improvement. The SX Turbo trim offered a more engaging driving experience, making it a contender for those seeking a sporty crossover.

Form and function

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

6/10

2021 Kia Sportage

7/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar occupied a middle ground in size, larger than compact luxury SUVs but smaller than midsize ones. Despite its size, interior space was not its strong suit, with competitors offering more legroom and headroom. Cargo space was competitive, with 15.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 48.9 cubic feet with them folded. The Velar's design, while stylish, contributed to a claustrophobic feel inside, and visibility was hindered by the tall hood and limited side glass. Towing capacity was respectable, with the V6 and SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition models capable of towing up to 5,511 pounds.

The 2021 Kia Sportage, while on the smaller side of the compact crossover segment, provided good interior space for passengers. The SX Turbo trim featured power-adjustable seats and heated and ventilated options. Rear legroom and headroom were adequate, but cargo space was limited, with 30.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 60.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. This was less than some competitors, but the Sportage still offered a comfortable and practical interior for everyday use.

Technology

6/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar featured the InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, with dual 10.0-inch touchscreens handling various functions. While the system boasted high-quality graphics, its slow response times were a drawback. Additional tech included a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and capacitive steering-wheel controls, all contributing to the Velar's modern and minimalist cabin.

The 2021 Kia Sportage's 8-inch touchscreen interface was user-friendly, with standard Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and USB ports. The SX Turbo trim added wireless charging and a premium audio system. The Sportage's technology was straightforward and easy to use, with logical menus and physical controls enhancing the overall experience.

Safety

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

6/10

2021 Kia Sportage

9/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar lacked safety ratings from major organizations, but it offered standard features like automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. Optional packages included adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, though Land Rover's offerings were less sophisticated compared to competitors.

The 2021 Kia Sportage excelled in safety, with standard features such as forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring. The SX Turbo trim added adaptive cruise control, and the model earned a Top Safety Pick status from the IIHS. The Sportage performed well in NHTSA crash tests, making it a strong choice for safety-conscious buyers.
