Our test vehicle, a 2020 Compass Limited with AWD, was loaded with options, bringing the total to $39,755. Despite its premium features, the Compass had some cost-cutting measures that detracted from its overall appeal, though it was a significant improvement over its predecessor.

The 2021 BMW X3, part of the third generation introduced in 2018, received updates including a plug-in hybrid model and M performance variants. This generation refined the X3's formula, offering the exterior and interior presence of larger BMW models. The X3's design was reminiscent of a downsized BMW X5, with a functional dash that, while not as aesthetically pleasing as the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, was more practical. Available trims included sDrive30i, xDrive30i, M40i, and the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid. Standard features included 18-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, and a 10.2-inch infotainment system, with options for genuine leather, a panoramic sunroof, and more. The M40i trim added 19-inch wheels and an M Sport suspension, enhancing its sporty appeal.

The Compass's suspension controlled body roll but allowed too much vertical motion, and the steering was heavy and vague. However, the Compass excelled off-road, especially in Trailhawk trim, with features like an Active Drive Low AWD system and Rock driving mode.

The 2021 BMW X3 offered a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the sDrive30i and xDrive30i trims, delivering 248 horsepower through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The xDrive30e plug-in hybrid produced 288 hp and offered brisk acceleration, with a 17-mile electric-only range.
