2020 Cadillac XT6 Reviews Summary

Loaded minivans offer unrivaled space and top out near $45,000, but they don’t have the same presence and style as 3-row SUVs and crossovers from luxury brands. Cadillac is very late to this market, though it’s not inexperienced. The Escalade is a franchise-making name, representing status and power. But not everyone wants to drive the automotive equivalent of the Chrysler Building. The 2020 Cadillac XT6 promises the room and utility of an Escalade with the efficiency and comfort of a smaller car. Unlike other Cadillac models, the XT6 is also priced to move.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Reviews Summary

The original Land Rover Range Rover revolutionized the SUV game by combining off-road capability with a modicum of civility. Land Rover is now trying to milk that success by creating a “family” of Range Rover models, including some with more car-like styling and character.

That’s where the Land Rover Range Rover Velar comes in. Launched for the 2018 model year, it sits above the Range Rover Evoque, but below the Range Rover Sport, in size and price (the traditional Range Rover remains the brand’s flagship). Land Rover chose the Velar name as a nod to the original 1969 Range Rover prototypes, which were badged Velar to hide their origin.

The main change for the 2020 model year is the addition of an SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition to the lineup. It’s a one-year-only special that packs a V8 engine instead of the usual V6 or turbo-four. This is the version we tested as, aside from what’s under the hood, it is representative of other Velar models.

Look and feel

2020 Cadillac XT6

6/10

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

9/10

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 presented a clean and crisp exterior, embodying modern Cadillac design with its smooth body panels and limited creases. It managed to hide its long, boxy shape under a tailored suit, featuring satin-painted silver accents and a medium-sized silver mesh grille. The XT6's thin LED headlights and vertical lightsaber-style running lamps added a touch of flair, while the overall design showed restraint and taste. However, the interior did not match the exterior's elegance. Despite having soft leather and gold-tinted carbon fiber trim, the seats were thin and lacked support, and the use of cheap vinyl in some areas detracted from the luxury feel. The interior seemed outdated compared to competitors, lacking contrast piping, stitching, and advanced technology.

In contrast, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar offered a unique blend of sleek and robust styling. Its low roof and steeply-raked windshield gave it a distinct profile, while the broad front end maintained the intimidating presence typical of Land Rovers. The Velar's design included short front and rear overhangs, enhancing its off-road capabilities. The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition added sportier touches, such as larger air intakes and quad exhaust tips. Inside, the Velar featured high-quality leather upholstery and metal trim, creating a cockpit-like feel with a tall, sloping instrument panel. However, the avant-garde styling limited headroom and visibility, making the interior feel cramped despite its luxury materials.

Performance

2020 Cadillac XT6

7/10

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

8/10

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 was powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. While it was capable of towing up to 4,000 pounds, the engine was coarse-sounding and less responsive compared to newer turbocharged V6 engines. The 9-speed automatic transmission provided quick shifts, and the all-wheel-drive system with adaptive dampers offered a balanced and controlled ride. The XT6's steering was direct and well-weighted, with a Sport mode enhancing the driving experience. However, the lack of advanced suspension options like MagneRide dampers was a drawback. Fuel efficiency was average, with a combined rating of 20 mpg.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, particularly the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, introduced a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine with 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This allowed the Velar to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 177 mph. Despite its power, the Velar was not the quickest in its class. The Dynamic Edition featured bigger brakes, retuned four-wheel drive, and an active exhaust system, enhancing its performance. The Velar's aluminum platform provided a solid and refined feel, but it felt large on tight roads. The rest of the powertrain lineup included a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and a 3.0-liter supercharged V6, both with standard four-wheel drive.

Form and function

2020 Cadillac XT6

9/10

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

6/10

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 offered a spacious interior with a third row that was more accommodating than many competitors. The second row was particularly roomy, with optional heated cushions and a 3-zone climate control system. The third row power-folded, and the second row could be mechanically dropped for added convenience. Cargo volume was generous, with 12.6 cubic feet with all seats up, expanding to 78.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows down. Visibility was good, aided by a digital mirror and improved controls for climate and infotainment systems.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, positioned between small and midsize luxury SUVs, offered competitive but not class-leading cargo space. With 15.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 48.9 cubic feet with them folded, it was practical but not exceptional. The Velar's stylish design compromised interior space, with limited headroom and a claustrophobic feel due to the chopped roof and small windows. The cockpit-like front seating area was cramped, though the tall center console was easily accessible. Towing capacity was respectable, with the V6 and SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition models capable of towing 5,511 pounds.

Technology

2020 Cadillac XT6

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

8/10

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 featured an updated infotainment system, a significant improvement over the previous CUE system. It offered cloud-based voice commands, a built-in app store, and driver profiles that could be transferred to other GM vehicles. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a suite of driver assists. However, the lack of semi-automated driving features and a small infotainment screen were drawbacks. Optional night vision and LED matrix headlights enhanced safety, but the absence of Super Cruise and other advanced tech features was noticeable.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar used the InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, with dual 10.0-inch touchscreens and a built-in WiFi hotspot. The system offered high-quality graphics but suffered from slow responses. The Velar also included a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and capacitive steering-wheel controls. While the tech complemented the minimalist cabin design, it was not as advanced as some competitors. The Pivi Pro system in the Land Rover Defender performed better, but it was not available in the Velar.

Safety

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

6/10

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 had not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but it was expected to receive top scores. Safety features included rear pedestrian detection, a digital rear-view mirror, and 360-degree cameras. The Driver Assist Package added forward emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and seat-belt tightening.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar also lacked crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and parking aids. Adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring were available as options. The Velar's safety offerings were less sophisticated than some competitors, with fewer standard driver-assist features.
