2019 Subaru Forester Reviews Summary

Consumers are hungry for all-weather capability, plenty of space for passengers, and plenty of space for the gear that comes with those passengers. Crossovers can offer all of this, while also providing solid fuel economy. So, it makes sense that crossovers of different sizes and price ranges are dominating the new car market. Nearly every automaker out there today offers at least one, if not multiple crossovers, in their showrooms.

But while this is a new trend for some brands, Subaru has been offering multiple vehicles that fit the crossover formula for decades.

In particular, the Subaru Forester has been around since 1997. When it arrived, the Forester provided standard all-wheel drive, reasonable fuel economy, plenty of cargo space, and an affordable base price. It was not the first vehicle to come standard with all-wheel drive—that would be the AMC Eagle of the 1970s. But the AMC brand is no more, and the '97 Forester offered all these attributes while also being incredibly reliable, and thus set the blueprint for the modern crossover craze.

The modern compact SUV market includes popular vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, and more. With all these rivals, can the all-new 2019 Subaru Forester once again set the curve in this segment?

2020 Buick Encore GX Reviews Summary

At first glance, one might suspect the 2020 Buick Encore GX is just the range-topping trim of the Buick Encore, a subcompact SUV. But closer examination reveals that it's a slightly larger, more upmarket small crossover. It has a longer wheelbase and heavily revised bodywork. But most crucially, it has more interior space and more powerful engines, which address the two biggest critiques of the Encore.

The Encore GX has a higher base price than the non-GX Encore, which then invites tougher competition. Starting at more than $25,000 brings it against some seriously competent small SUVs, such as the Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona. So, should Buick be careful what it wished for by creating a better—but more expensive—Encore?

2019 Subaru Forester

7/10

2020 Buick Encore GX

8/10

The 2019 Subaru Forester was slightly larger and wider than its predecessor, resembling a scaled-down version of the Subaru Ascent. The exterior design was practical, prioritizing function over luxury. Inside, the cabin maintained a modern look without sacrificing utility. The Forester was available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring trims, each offering a range of features from standard LED headlights and symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) to advanced driver-assistance systems.

The 2020 Buick Encore GX, slightly larger than the standard Encore, featured a more mature and complete exterior design. The cabin, while not as upscale as some competitors, offered a high level of care and fit and finish. The Encore GX came in Preferred, Select, and Essence trims, each providing a variety of standard and optional features, including heated power-adjustable side mirrors, remote keyless entry, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Performance

2019 Subaru Forester

6/10

2020 Buick Encore GX

6/10

The 2019 Subaru Forester was powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine, producing 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. This engine, while smooth and providing a low center of gravity, lacked the torque needed for brisk acceleration. The Forester's symmetrical AWD and continuously variable transmission (CVT) prioritized efficiency over performance. Subaru's SI-Drive system offered Intelligent and Sport modes to enhance throttle response and power delivery. The Forester's ride was smooth, with excellent handling and minimal body roll, making it a comfortable choice for both city and highway driving. Fuel economy was impressive, with an EPA rating of 26 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 combined.

The 2020 Buick Encore GX came standard with a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Our test model featured the optional 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, delivering 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with a CVT for front-wheel drive or a nine-speed automatic for all-wheel drive, provided confident but not brisk performance. The Encore GX's driving experience was smooth, with responsive steering and a well-tuned suspension that handled bumps and potholes effectively. Fuel economy was competitive, though specific figures were not provided.

2020 Buick Encore GX

6/10

The 2019 Subaru Forester offered impressive cargo space, with the base model providing a class-leading 76.1 cubic feet and other trims offering 70.9 cubic feet. The larger wheelbase resulted in more backseat space, and the 8.7 inches of ground clearance made it suitable for various terrains. The cabin was designed with functionality in mind, featuring numerous cubbies, compartments, and bottle holders. The tall greenhouse provided excellent visibility and a commanding driving position.

The 2020 Buick Encore GX offered increased rear seat and cargo space compared to the standard Encore. With the rear seats up, it provided 23.5 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 50.2 cubic feet with the seats folded. The rear legroom was ample, and the rear load floor could be adjusted for additional space. The front cabin featured a redesigned center console with additional trays and cubby space, making it practical for everyday use.

The 2020 Buick Encore GX came with GM’s latest touchscreen infotainment system, offering a crisp display and responsive interface.
