2019 Nissan Maxima Reviews Summary

The Maxima has endured for eight generations as a premium midsize Nissan sedan. While not the “four-door sports car” that Nissan proclaims, the Maxima’s powerful V6 engines and crisp handling have earned it a solid reputation over the past three decades. We last tested the Maxima when this generation was brand-new for 2016. Now that Nissan has refreshed it ever so mildly for 2019, we’ve taken another look at its updated style, technology, and interior features.

2020 Acura TLX Reviews Summary

More than Infiniti and Lexus, Acura has consistently positioned itself as the Japanese luxury brand for driving enthusiasts. But for a while, some of the company's successful products were anything but fun to drive. However, when equipped with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), the TL sedan, and since 2015, the TLX that replaced it, have always shown people a good time—particularly those who prefer to take the road less traveled. But that doesn’t mean the 2020 Acura TLX is flawless. Far from it, actually.

Look and feel

2019 Nissan Maxima

8/10

2020 Acura TLX

6/10

The 2019 Nissan Maxima showcased a refined evolution of Nissan's V-shaped design, which had become more acceptable over the years. The model featured new projector-beam LED headlights with intricate reflector patterns, an edgier grille, and a silver bumper strip beneath enlarged fog-lamp enclosures. The LED taillights were tinted black, sitting above a revised bumper and quad tailpipes. Despite these updates, the Maxima retained its concave front fascia, wavy side creases, and the distinctive "floating roof" design. Inside, the Maxima offered upgraded materials, with the SV trim boasting contrast stitching, polished black console trim, and minimal hard plastic. The all-black interior exuded quality, with ample padding and upscale textures, rewarding drivers with a premium feel.

In contrast, the 2020 Acura TLX, especially with the A-Spec option package, presented a handsome yet somewhat anonymous design. The A-Spec package added visual upgrades like 19-inch wheels and revised bumpers. The exclusive TLX PMC Edition, hand-built in Ohio, featured a striking Valencia Red Pearl paint and unique exterior accents. The PMC Edition, priced at the top of the TLX lineup, included the A-Spec and Advance packages, offering a comprehensive suite of features. While the TLX's design was appealing, it was the PMC Edition's exclusivity and craftsmanship that set it apart, making it a standout choice for those seeking a unique and well-equipped vehicle.

Performance

2019 Nissan Maxima

7/10

2020 Acura TLX

9/10

The 2019 Nissan Maxima was powered by a robust 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque. This engine was paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that sent power to the front wheels. Despite the potential for torque steer, the Maxima managed to mitigate this issue effectively, providing smooth and immediate thrust. The CVT simulated gear shifts well, enhancing the driving experience. However, the Maxima's driving pleasure was somewhat diminished by its mushy brake pedal and over-boosted steering. The suspension, tuned for a balance of ride quality and nimble response, compensated for these shortcomings. The Maxima offered decent fuel economy, with an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 24 combined.

The 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition featured a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and SH-AWD system. This setup provided a smooth power delivery, with torque building steadily as the engine revved. The SH-AWD system enhanced the TLX's driving dynamics, allowing for agile cornering and improved traction. The transmission was well-behaved, and the paddle shifters added to the driving enjoyment. The TLX's suspension offered a firm yet comfortable ride, making it suitable for both spirited driving and daily commutes. The TLX achieved 23 mpg in combined driving, aligning with EPA estimates.

Form and function

2019 Nissan Maxima

9/10

2020 Acura TLX

7/10

The 2019 Nissan Maxima featured a single 8-inch touchscreen integrated into the dash, offering quick response times and easy operation via touch or knob. The interior provided ample passenger space, with particularly comfortable front seats designed to reduce muscle fatigue. However, the trunk space was limited to 14.3 cubic feet. The Maxima's seating position was driver-oriented, with a flat-bottom steering wheel and canted center stack.

The 2020 Acura TLX offered a high-quality interior with supple leather, heated and ventilated front seats, and ample room for both front and rear passengers. Rear occupants benefited from air-conditioning vents and available heated seats. While storage space was plentiful, the trunk was also limited to 14.3 cubic feet. The TLX's interior was designed to provide comfort and convenience, making it a pleasant environment for daily driving.

Technology

2019 Nissan Maxima

7/10

2020 Acura TLX

2/10

The 2019 Nissan Maxima came equipped with an updated navigation system, customizable infotainment home screen, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It featured a high-speed USB-C port and compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The Maxima offered remote services through NissanConnect, including automatic 911 dialing and stolen-vehicle tracking. However, it lacked Nissan's ProPilot Assist suite of semi-automated driving functions.

The 2020 Acura TLX's infotainment system was criticized for its dual-screen layout, which caused distraction and frustration. The top display was not a touchscreen, while the bottom display was, leading to confusion. Despite these issues, the Acura/ELS premium audio system was praised for its sound quality. The TLX included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a smartphone charger.

Safety

2019 Nissan Maxima

8/10

2020 Acura TLX

7/10

The 2019 Nissan Maxima offered a range of standard safety features, including forward-emergency braking and a driver-attention monitor. Higher trims added features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and pedestrian detection. The Maxima received a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA and was an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

The 2020 Acura TLX included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. However, its aging architecture affected its IIHS ratings, with an Acceptable result in the small overlap frontal-impact test. The TLX earned 5-star ratings from the NHTSA. While the safety technologies were effective, they lacked the refinement of more modern systems.
