2024 Rivian R1T
$69,900
MSRP
MPG:
Min 60 Max 74
Positives
- + Powerful motors
- + Impressive electric range
- + Premium interior materials
Considerations
- - Expensive
- - Options are similarly pricey
- - Polarizing exterior design
Summary

2024 Lucid Air
$69,900
MSRP
MPG:
Min 101 Max 134
Positives
- + Impressive electric range
- + Fun to drive
- + Stylish design
Considerations
- - Sapphire trim's interior disappoints
- - Unintuitive controls to adjust basic features
Summary
Three years into its lifecycle, the electric Lucid Air sedan sees drastic price cuts and increases for 2024. A new trim, the Sapphire, is a quarter-million dollars and outperforms every series-production EV in acceleration, handling, and range. Lucid Motors has done a decade and a half's worth of development and hired some of the best mechanical and software engineers in the business. Unlike its rivals, the Air feels like a complete luxury sedan from top to bottom, and with the proper charging station at home, it could replace all need for a gas car.
Verdict: With speed, style, and superior range, the 2024 Lucid Air is a luxury sedan that doesn't need to make excuses as an electric car.

2025 Polestar 3
$67,500
MSRP
MPG:
Min 82 Max 84
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Premium interior materials
- + Quiet cabin
Considerations
- - Occasionally confusing interfaces
- - Sketchy Pilot Assist performance
- - Nobody knows what it is when they see it
Summary
During several days of driving the new Polestar 3 electric luxury SUV in Southern California, it swiveled nearly as many heads as a Volkswagen ID. Buzz—which is saying something. People take notice of its crisply tailored design, enigmatic emblems, and swift but silent electric propulsion. But do they know what it is, and where to buy it? Production kicked off in August 2024 in South Carolina. But here in EV-happy Los Angeles, we’ve seen only one other one on the road.
Verdict: The 2025 Polestar 3 is an excellent electric SUV that remains a mystery to luxury EV customers. The only reference to the brand and model is a decal on the door, and because the stylish logo adorning the hood, hatch, and wheels is unknown, it’s the ultimate stealth vehicle. The Polestar 3 deserves recognition, not mystery.

2024 Lexus RC F
$67,145
MSRP
MPG:
Min 24 Max 24
Positives
- + Fun to drive
- + Impressively comfortable ride
- + Great handling
Considerations
- - Dated platform
- - Frustrating infotainment touchpad
Summary
The car we’re discussing in this review is the Lexus RC F, a sports car based on a luxury coupe. The Lexus RC is so-named as an acronym for “Radical Coupe.” And while it may not be so revolutionary nearly 10 years after its introduction, that doesn’t mean it isn’t compelling.
Verdict: The Lexus RC F is an oldie but a goodie. The Lexus RC F Track Edition, which we drove for this review, goes much further. It’s focused and purposeful, and for the buyer whose priorities align with its mission, it’s hard to fault.

2024 BMW i5
$66,800
MSRP
MPG:
Min 93 Max 105
Positives
- + Fun to drive
- + Impressive electric range
- + Comfortable
Considerations
- - Unintuitive technology
Summary
A new model, the 2024 BMW i5 makes a big impression among electric luxury sedans, with stirring performance, plenty of range, and a very comfortable cabin. Among its few rivals, the i5 rises to the top yet is still less expensive than the competition, so you should definitely start your search here.
Verdict: Underwhelming infotainment system aside, the i5 delivers everything expected of a luxury electric sedan.

2025 BMW X5
$66,300
MSRP
MPG:
Min 22 Max 59
Positives
- + Multiple powertrain options
- + Great handling
- + Comfortable
Considerations
- - Weak value compared to rivals
- - Advanced safety features are not standard
Summary
The 2025 BMW X5 is the automaker’s midsize luxury SUV, positioned between the X3 and X7, and alongside the coupe-like X6. That puts it in a well-populated segment alongside SUVs like the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Genesis GV80, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Porsche Cayenne, and Volvo XC90. Following a substantial update for the 2024 model year, the X5 celebrates its 25th anniversary with a limited-edition model, but receives no other changes.
Verdict: The latest version of the X5 isn’t the best value, but it explains this SUV’s longevity.
2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N
$66,200
MSRP
MPG:
Min 72 Max 72
Positives
- + Fun to drive
- + Great handling
- + Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
Considerations
- - Unimpressive electric range
- - Poor value for money
- - Not as much fun to drive at normal speeds
Summary
The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the first from Hyundai’s N performance sub-brand. It applies the same formula from gasoline models like the high-performance Elantra N to the Ioniq 5, upping power and adding stickier tires, a track-tuned suspension, and better aerodynamics to improve on-track performance.
Verdict: The Ioniq 5 N is a true track-capable performance car that just happens to be electric.

2024 BMW X5
$65,200
MSRP
MPG:
Min 22 Max 27
Positives
- + Fun to drive
- + Comfortable
- + Premium interior materials
Considerations
- - Poor voice recognition technology
- - Advanced safety features are not standard
- - Poor value for money
Summary
Our test vehicle for this review was the X5 xDrive50e, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the X5 midsize SUV, but it’s just one of several X5 models you can buy. Those with 40i in their name feature a satisfying turbocharged six-cylinder engine (with electric assist in the plug-in hybrid), while the M60i features a turbocharged V8 engine. Maximum performance is available in the comically fun X5 M Competition. Drive any of them, though, and it’s easy to understand why the X5 is BMW’s best-selling model.
Verdict: Newer BMWs are losing what has always made this automaker’s cars and SUVs appealing to people who like to drive. Fortunately, the 2024 BMW X5 hasn’t succumbed to the trend. In xDrive50e specification, it remains a delight to drive while supplying about 40 miles of electric-only range before its gasoline-fueled turbo six turns on.

2025 Jeep Wagoneer S
$65,200
MSRP
MPG:
Min 85 Max 85
Positives
- + Quick acceleration
- + Impressive stereo
Considerations
- - Poor ride quality
- - Unimpressive electric range
- - numerous technical glitches
Summary
As Jeep's first all-electric vehicle, the Wagoneer S is plagued by several fundamental missteps that are not just annoying but cause for genuine concern. It misses the mark by a noticeable margin when compared with rivals, even those that are relatively new on the scene.
Verdict: While we're glad Jeep is moving into the EV space, this is one to avoid for now.
2025 Lexus GX
$64,735
MSRP
MPG:
Min 21 Max 21
Positives
- + Top on- and off-road capability, especially among Overtrail models
- + Easy-to-use tech
- + Great looks
Considerations
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Off-road features not standard
- - High base price
Summary
One year on from the latest-generation Lexus GX’s debut, the excitement is still there. The 2025 Lexus GX looks great, drives well, and handles itself incredibly well off-road. The latter is something for which that the GX has always been renowned, at least among those who’ve been inclined to find out.
Verdict: With great standard tech, safety equipment, looks, and overall versatility, the Lexus GX is worth the attention of any shopper who’s in the market for a luxury SUV.

2024 Acura ZDX
$64,500
MSRP
MPG:
Min 74 Max 83
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Comfortable
- + Impressive technology
Considerations
- - Unimpressive charging rates
- - Quirky control placements
- - Cheap interior plastics
Summary
Seeking a fast path to an , Acura and its parent company, American Honda, partnered with General Motors to use GM's acclaimed Ultium EV platform and component set. The results are the 2024 Acura ZDX and Honda Prologue, and the ZDX is an appealing entry in the two-row electric luxury SUV segment. Acura sources it from GM's Spring Hill, Tennessee, assembly plant, which also produces the Cadillac Lyriq.
Verdict: Acura-specific design and details distinguish the new 2024 ZDX as different from GM-branded electric SUVs. Still, those in the know will identify GM-sourced design and components as apparent as the infotainment system and as subtle as the new-car smell. Does that matter? Ultimately, the market will decide, but we like the ZDX.

2025 Audi Q6 e-tron
$63,800
MSRP
MPG:
Min 93 Max 93
Positives
- + It has the SUV look
- + Easy-to-use technology
- + Faster charging than previous Audi electric SUVs
Considerations
- - Poor ride quality
- - Glitchy voice recognition
Summary
The 2025 Audi Q6 e-tron is a new addition to the German luxury brand’s electric vehicle and SUV lineups. It’s a two-row, five-seat midsize model that slots between the Q4 e-tron and Audi Q8 e-tron SUVs, giving Audi a more direct rival to the Acura ZDX, Cadillac Lyriq, and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV—although it also dabbles in Tesla Model Y and Porsche Macan EV territory.
Verdict: Compared to its rivals, the Q6 e-tron is a better choice for buyers who want an EV that still feels like a normal SUV.

2025 Audi RS 3
$63,400
MSRP
Positives
- + Powerful engine
- + Fun to drive
- + Great handling
Considerations
- - Not much cargo space
- - Poor value for money
Summary
The RS badge only accompanies the sportiest version of a given Audi model, as demonstrated for the 2025 Audi RS 3. It differentiates itself from the Audi A3 and S3 sedans with a unique engine, more sophisticated chassis tech, and bolder styling. The current-generation RS 3 was introduced for the 2022 model year, and for 2025 it gets updated chassis tuning that makes it even easier to drive fast, plus a subtle facelift.
Verdict: With its closest rival, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S, on the way out, the RS 3 is in a class of its own. It combines four-door practicality, sports car-rivalling performance, and an interior worthy of the Audi name. But you’ll pay a lot for all of that.

2024 Lexus GX
$62,900
MSRP
MPG:
Min 21 Max 21
Positives
- + Very powerful engine
- + Impressive technology
- + Capable Overtrail trims
Considerations
- - Poor gas mileage
- - Polarizing styling
- - Much more expensive than the 2023 model
Summary
Redesigning a long-running vehicle requires a big swing, and after fourteen years since the second-generation model debuted, building the all-new 2024 GX was a tall order. Lexus’s engineers struck out to make this midsize SUV better in every way: better tech, a better engine, more capability, and more luxury. They succeeded.
Verdict: Comfortable but rugged, the thirsty, body-on-frame Lexus GX isn’t the right luxury SUV for every shopper. However, for those in the market for this particular blend of lavish capability, it may be the best option on the market.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE
$62,650
MSRP
MPG:
Min 19 Max 27
Positives
- + Multiple powertrain options
- + Impressive electric range
- + Comfortable
Considerations
- - Fairly pedestrian handling
- - Advanced safety features are not standard
Summary
This midsize Mercedes SUV gets a facelift for 2024 that includes an upgraded interior and infotainment system as well as some new styling cues. Mercedes’ 4matic all-wheel drive system is standard across the lineup, as is seating for five, though a small third row is an option. Models include the GLE 350, GLE 450, and GLE 580, all with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Also on tap are the AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S. However, new for this year, and the primary tester for this review, is the GLE 450e with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Verdict: A new plug-in hybrid powertrain helps the GLE hit a sweet spot between performance and efficiency. Elsewhere, this is classic Mercedes: big and beautiful with plenty of luxury touches and great space. These aren’t inexpensive SUVs, but then again, Mercedes is one of the principal faces of the pricey luxury market.

2025 Toyota Sequoia
$62,425
MSRP
MPG:
Min 22 Max 24
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Powerful engine
- + Easy-to-use technology
Considerations
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Cramped third row
- - Not much cargo space
Summary
The 2025 Sequoia is Toyota’s full-size SUV, based on the same platform as the Tundra pickup truck and using the same i-Force Max hybrid powertrain. It seats up to eight people, holds up to 86.9 cubic feet of cargo, carries up to 1,730 pounds of payload, and tows up to 9,520 pounds of trailer. The new Sequoia 1794 Edition slots into the lineup as a Texas-themed luxury model, and it certainly is nice. But it cannot mask this SUV’s fundamental flaws.
Verdict: People buy full-size SUVs to carry lots of people, haul lots of cargo, and tow lots of weight. However, due to its packaging requirements, the Sequoia is a rock star only if you’re attaching a trailer to it, and even then, it’s not class-leading in capability.

2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
$62,300
MSRP
MPG:
Min 31 Max 33
Positives
- + Great ride quality
- + Premium interior materials
- + Impressive technology
Considerations
- - High price
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Minor driving assistance irritations
Summary
Long the yardstick against which its rivals are measured, the 2024 Mercedes E-Class gets a redesign. In addition to understated styling that can stand the test of time, the elegant interior adds an infusion of technology that sets new standards in the segment. Mild-hybrid engines, standard all-wheel drive, the return of the All-Terrain wagon, and an upcoming plug-in hybrid massaged for performance by AMG are all on the new E-Class menu.
Verdict: Based on observations from several days spent with the E 350 4Matic sedan, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains at the top of its midsize luxury sedan game when equipped with all the extras. Refined, sophisticated, and soothing to drive, it embodies what a car like this should be.

2025 Chevrolet Suburban
$62,000
MSRP
MPG:
Min 18 Max 20
Positives
- + Excellent performance from the diesel engine
- + Impressive technology
- + Massively useful cargo space
Considerations
- - Ungainly size
- - Expensive in every trim level
- - Skip the 24-inch wheels
Summary
The Chevy Suburban sees significant updates for the 2025 model year, but the most impactful are visible only from the inside. A new touchscreen interface joins a flashy driver information display, and together they solve one of our biggest gripes with the outgoing model. Beyond its tech update, the new Suburban features a refreshed exterior, new interior upgrades, and a revised diesel engine that is now available on the Z71 trim level.
Verdict: Z71 shoppers will love the newly available 3.0-liter diesel, but the majority of shoppers are going to want a new 2025 Suburban because of its impressive 17.7-inch touchscreen display.

2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE
$61,850
MSRP
MPG:
Min 19 Max 63
Positives
- + Multiple body styles
- + Multiple powertrain options
- + Stylish interior
Considerations
- - Ungainly styling
- - Drives bigger than it looks
- - Poor outward visibility
Summary
Summary: G-Wagens aside, the now-discontinued M-Class is what cemented Mercedes’ place in the SUV jungle. The descendent of that pioneering model is the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, which continues as the automaker’s entry into a midsize luxury SUV segment populated by the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Genesis GV80, and Lexus RX. Mercedes also sells a GLE Coupe that competes with the BMW X6. Changes for 2025 are limited to two new configurations—a GLE 350 SUV base model and GLE 450 4Matic Coupe—and several new paint colors.
Verdict: The GLE-Class is a solid luxury SUV for families, but its competition is equally good.

2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar
$61,500
MSRP
MPG:
Min 25 Max 26
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Powerful engine
- + Comfortable
Considerations
- - Minor quality oversights
- - Unintuitive technology
- - Unimpressive steering assist
Summary
A luxury SUV with seating for five people, the 2024 Velar is one of four SUVs to wear Range Rover lettering across the leading edge of its hood. It slots into the lineup between the smaller Evoque and more capable Sport. This model year, the Velar receives several updates. They include design and comfort enhancements and several improvements to the standard infotainment system.
Verdict: The changes to the 2024 Range Rover Velar result in an appealing, if flawed, alternative to the best-sellers in the segment, such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class. If the Velar had more natural and less frustrating technology, it could raise its profile in the midsize luxury SUV segment considerably.
