Despite its large presence in the luxury vehicle market, Mercedes-Benz has long had a thriving commercial vehicle operation. Its vans, which include the Sprinter and smaller Metris, are used around the world to haul people and equipment from place to place.
The Metris is proof that Mercedes-Benz does more than build expensive luxury cars. The vans are built to work, and the 2021 model year brings new tech, an updated infotainment system, and more safety features to the Metris. Mercedes also bumped gross vehicle weight ratings and updated the transmission to a more modern nine-speed unit for the new model year, replacing the previous seven-speed gearbox.
All Metris models get power from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that makes 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. That powertrain is good for a payload capacity of 2,205 pounds and a tow rating of 5,000 pounds when the van is properly equipped. Mercedes also says that the Metris carries a maintenance interval of 15,000 miles, which should keep them in motion and out of the shop for longer periods of time. The standard wheelbase is 126 inches, while an extended 135-inch model is offered.
Every 2021 Metris gets a new 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, which can run Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That unit also brings navigation with traffic information. Mercedes-Benz offers a Pro Connect option for the Metris, which adds a SIM card for connectivity services and an LTE internet connection to be used for the Emergency Call System.
Though it’s a cargo van at heart, Metris buyers can opt for several features to improve the in-vehicle experience. A $536 Driver comfort package adds lumbar support to both seats, while a $685 Driver efficiency package brings fog lights and cruise control. Other standalone options allow buyers to add windows, cargo area protection systems, upgraded wheels and tires, and more. It’s also important to note that the vans can be upfitted for use by HVAC and plumbing specialists, electricians, delivery drivers, and for general services.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris is on sale now with a starting price of $32,630 before destination. The longer wheelbase Metris starts at $33,155.
