The Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo is Mercedes-Benz’s small utility van, a commercial vehicle designed for small business owners, contractors, or tradesmen who have the need to move people, gear, or tools, but whose needs don’t justify the larger Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, or Chevy Express. Depending on configuration, seating for up to 7 people is available. The Metris Cargo can haul up to 2,425 pounds of payload and offers up to 183 cubic feet of cargo space (199 with the long wheelbase), figures that make it exactly the midsize van Mercedes-Benz claims it is.
All Metris Cargo Vans are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A 7-speed transmission sends torque to the rear wheels (RWD). Neither all-wheel drive (AWD) or a high roof are options in this van. But its 5,000-pound towing capacity is respectable enough to haul a small utility trailer. EPA fuel-economy estimates for city and highway vary depending on the configuration of the Metris Cargo Van, but every version earns a 22-mpg combined rating.
Two trims of the Metris Cargo Van are available: The Worker Cargo Van is a bare-bones version of the vehicle designed to achieve the lowest possible cost of entry and operating expenses. Part of that equation is that the Metris Worker is available in only a single color (white) and with only a single interior material (black fabric). It’s a stripper offering only three packages: Convenience, Utility, and Mercedes Pro Connectivity, a digital fleet-management tool designed to save fleet owners time and expense. Both trims offer various extended service and extended warranty packages to serve fleet owners.
The standard Metris Cargo Van offers more package options, more standard equipment, and is available in two wheelbases, 126 and 135 inches. It also offers the Mercedes Pro Connectivity package. Three rear-door options are available on the Metris Cargo: a 270-degree split opening, 180-degree split opening, and a liftgate configuration. It’s available in 13 colors with two interior materials. An array of package options are offered as well, including two safety packages that bring a variety of modern driver aids to the Metris Cargo. Those include lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. Both versions of the Metris Cargo come standard with Crosswind Assist, which helps stabilize the van in crosswinds.
Both versions of the Metris Cargo are available with pre-installed (upfit) cargo and tool management systems by Master Solutions. The organizers and roof racks are designed to be trade specific and offer packages for plumbers, carpenters, delivery people, and HVAC or refrigeration specialists.
The Metris Worker Cargo Van starts at $27,180, and the standard Metris Cargo Van is available from $31,390. This pricing makes the Metris less expensive than most larger vans but more costly than the smaller Ford Transit Connect Cargo.
