New for 2006, the Hyundai Accent is a subcompact car built on skimpy bones. It sells on price rather than any particularly redeeming qualities you can see, hear, or feel. It's not safe, it's not handsome, but there are few new cars this cheap to buy and run.

The Accent comes as a two-door hatchback or four-door sedan. I think the hatch looks better, but both belong in the Ugly Section. Individually, each visual detail is good. The oversize headlights, vertical taillights, mirrors, door handles, the grille with the little kink above the Hyundai badgeâthey're all fine. Clumped together on the Accent's stubby body, however, they look cheap. On the standard 14-inch wheels with plastic hubcaps, the Accent is pretty as in pretty bad. Look at a Honda Civic or any number of small cars to find out why the Accent looks as if its dressed 20 years too late.
The interior, remarkably, pulls off a clean and stylish look, with an available two-tone dash, a silver-painted radio surround, and attractive gauges. It's convincing in quality until you run your fingers over the rock-hard seats, feel the brittle plastic on the doors, or pull on the turn signal stalk. You get what you pay for.

The Accent's engine is a bright spot. A 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder makes 110 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque, with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. The automatic is sluggish and makes the Accent feel slower than it is (you'll need 11 seconds to get to 60 mph). The manual is a much better choice, and it delivers better fuel economy (an EPA-estimated 27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, 29 mpg combined; the automatic is 24/33/28). Engine noise is controlled, as is the ride quality. Handling is clumsy without the larger, wider tires found on higher trims, and the steering has a light and disconnected feel from the road. Braking is adequate.

While the seats are too firm for long-distance drives, there is enough room in the Accent sedan for four people, and the back seat features head rests for all three seating positions. Visibility is superb. Cargo capacity on the sedan is 12 cubic feet. The hatchback has 16 cubic feet, and more still with the seats folded. The climate and radio controls are very simple. The front center console has two cupholders. Rear passengers get another two in the fold-down center armrest. The front door pockets have larger openings for bottles and there is another sealed compartment behind the gear shifter. A tilt steering wheel is standard. The driver's seat is eight-way adjustable.

The Accent in base GS trim has no stereo or air conditioning. This hatchback-only trim has crank windows, manual locks, and manual mirrors. This is how Hyundai can price the car for less than $11,000. The GS can be ordered with these essentials for a couple grand more. The mid-level GLS sedan has all these features, plus body-color door handles, mirrors, and door handles. Remote keyless entry and 15-inch alloy wheels are optional.
The top SE hatchback has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob made by B&M Racing, a rear spoiler with a rear wiper/washer, sport suspension, fog lights, illuminated vanity mirrors, metal-look interior trim, and 205-width tires on 16-inch alloy wheels (quite big for a small car). The hatchbacks have other available options that were not factory-installed, such as a 570-watt Kenwood stereo.

Six airbags are standard on all Accent trims: Dual front, dual front side, and front/rear head curtain. A tire-pressure monitoring system is standard. Traction and stability control are unavailable. Anti-lock brakes used to be standard, but Hyundai removed the four-wheel discs and put drums on the rear. This is a cheaper and less effective setup than having discs at every corner. Only the SE has standard ABS with four-wheel discs. They're optional on the GLS sedan and not on the GS.
Crash-test results are bad. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the 2008 Accent with five out of five stars for both occupants in a frontal crash, but only three for the rear passenger in the side test and four for the driver. The Accent scored worse in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), earning an "acceptable" for the moderate front overlap and roof strength and the worst "poor" in the side test.

The 2008 Accent starts at $10,775 for the GS hatchback, $12,925 for the GLS sedan, and $14,575 for the SE hatchback. A five-year/60,000-mile warranty and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty are class-leading and unmatched by anyone in the business. The price is great, but the lack of basic features, poor safety ratings, and terrible styling make the Accent one of the worst small cars to pick when there are so many better ones out there.

This is a great car. My last one had 190k miles on it and was running strong until I hit a buck with it. My daughter bought this car, it’s beautiful and just like mine except it doesn’t have the hands free radio buttons and electric locks and doors. We also got it for a good deal.Mar 19, 2021

Good pickup, great handling, high quality ABS. Low maintenance costs, excellent AC. with a wee bit of aesthetic work the looks of a rally sports car achievable.

Performance:
Acceleration feels semi-sporty even if it is pretty slow.
The brakes work excellent and the handling is very, very good! A really fun car to drive!
Appearance:
This is the newest generation of the Hyundai Accent. Latest design for my 3dr is a hatchback. Looks sporty, curvy, and doesn't appear "cheap"
Build Quality:
Metal Doors, not cheap plastic, Excellent electronic controls, motor is in good condition (been driving on it for 20k miles with a good maintenance and haven't had to replace much at all.) Great Build quality!
Cost of Ownership:
Repairs are non-existent for the most part other than the typical maintenance from the book. I have a lead foot and get close to advertised MPG in stop and go traffic and I get over what is advertised on the highway. 22 city, 34 hwy is what I usually average.
Fun Factor:
Car is just a BLAST to drive! Would actually recommend it as an autocross car, so long as you upgrade the stock tires. This car sticks to the road very well and the brakes are superb for this class. Love this car! Keep in mind this is coming from someone who has driven everything from a beater saturn to a mustang gt with some minor modifications, and up to a race prepped 240sx.Oct 07, 2009

I have had no problems with this car at all, it gets good mileage, has enough power, you can fold the seats down and haul big stuff in it thanks to the hatchback, it rides good, I like it. Performance - The new Accent executive is just perfect! Great accelaration, power brakes and excellent handling with battery power saver, adjustable steering & smooth gear shift, Smooth ride.
Build quality - Build quality is satisfactory but ddefinetly not the best in its class.
Appearance - Beige interiors, leather steering wheel, tinted glasses, wooden finish dashboard panels & Its got body colored bumbers as default.
Cost of ownership - excellent price, value for money along with a good average (cant match Honda but its good) but a hit high on maintainance. With CNG it costs Rs1.2/km.

In the past Hyundai Accents have been ridiculed for being both unrewarding to drive along with being riddled with faults. Hyundai have since made serious progress every passing year since the 21st century. The Accent is no exception.
To drive the Accent isn't really that interesting, the engine seems to be adequate for most driving applications. To accelerate quickly...it just won't because of the engine's power. What is terrible in the powertrain is the automatic transmission. I haven't encountered a transmission that was so slow to react to gear changes ie. D to R, the transmission seems to forget what it was going for a second. This means the transmission's quality is suspect here and I've already seen a 2000 km Accent go in for repairs regarding the transmission.
The interior for the most part is plastic, not much to say since it is a very low priced car. I didn't like the hole in the rear passenger's cup holder(remove the pad and you'll see it), how Hyundai allowed this ugly feature to pass I don't know. Most Hyundai Accents come well equipped but you could get a very base car...which I think is a bad idea.
Its quite light and quite fuel efficient, not as great as a Yaris or Fit but still very good. The car does have a few reliability issues with check engine lights and of course the bad automatic transmission. The Accent is the oldest of the lineup as of 2009 and does need a major interior update like the Sonata. Overall its a cheap car but it isn't exactly the best one.Jan 15, 2009

I love the way it handles and all the little buttons and gadgets, but i don't like the fact that nothing on it is electric, and there is no cruse control. Gas mileage is great. This is a really great car for the price. With the highest horsepower and torque in it's class (110 HP/ 106 TQ) and a low curb weight, this car will supprise you in performance. Build quailty is good and on par with Hyundai's other veichles. Personally, I think it is the best looking hatchback in the class and the only one offered as a 3 door. MPG is great rating 27/33 for a manual transmission and 26/35 for an automatic. With the SE's sport tuned suspension, the car is pretty fun in the twisties.Sep 28, 2008

Ok to be honest this car is the best that I have ever owned. It has convinient black-hole seating. That it is it is larger than a standard medium sized American car. One or two ball joints needed if worn?
Had suspension arms done. Paid and left mechanic. Immediately, car started squeaking from left front driver tire, or that's what it sounded like. I brought Hyundai 2008 back to see if tire was too tight, needed realignment, etc. They told me I needed a single RIGHT ball bearing! I asked why they did not see this before? 1. This is not something that suddenly occurs and 2. Why one side and not the other? Am I being scammed?

Car wont start after putting gas in tank. How do i fix this?
Every time i gas up either $5 or filling up from E I always have to turn the key and depress the gas pedal to get it to start then rev the engine until it can run on its own if i do not rev the engine car will cut off. There isnt a error code that comes on either after the engine can run on its own i can turn off the car and turn the key and the car starts as normal. Please help on this issue or if someone has had related problems.

Spark Plug Coil Damage
Hi there, I think I may have found a major issue with my 2008 Hyuandai Accent. I was replacing the spark plugs when I came across a coil that did not look right. In fact, I can't even get it out if the cylinder. The car has been running awful lately, which is why I thought it may be spark plugs. Decreased acceleration, rough idling, etc. Could this be the culprit?
