The affordable, compact Ford Focus has proved popular with drivers since its introduction in 2000, thanks to its peppy engines, responsive handling, and clean design lines. And for 2008, Ford gives drivers even more to like. For starters, a new two-door coupe joins the Focus lineup. Like the four-door sedan, it's available in three trims, including the S, SE, and SES. To make way for the coupe, Ford eliminated the Focus hatchbacks and wagons from this year's lineup.
The bigger news, however, might be the fact that the 2008 Focus has been extensively redesigned both inside and out. The exterior design updates start up front with a new two-bar chrome grille, which mirrors the look of the grille on many other Ford vehicles, creating a manufacturer-wide branding element. Other exterior design updates include flared wheel arches, a reshaped rear deck, and an overall more muscular appearance.
The Focus's interior has been redesigned as well for a more upscale, open appearance, with a larger center console that offers more storage space and redesigned door panels with larger storage bins. A new top-of-the-dash display places critical information at eye level, making it easier for drivers to keep their eyes on the road.
Even the Focus's 2.0-liter Duratec 20 inline four-cylinder engine received an update, with new air intake, cooling, and exhaust systems, all of which were designed to improve the engine's smoothness, responsiveness, and fuel efficiency. As a result, Ford notes that the 2008 Focus can achieve a maximum of 35 mpg on the highway. The engine links to either the standard five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic, available as an option.
Other new features for 2008 include a stiffer, "Euro-inspired" body structure and a retuned suspension, which result in better ride quality, sharper steering, and improved handling. Also, a number of new options are availabe for the 2008 Focus, including a color-configurable ambient lighting system, Sirius satellite radio, a high-performance audio system with an in-dash CD player, and Sync, Ford's new in-car, Bluetooth-compatible wireless communications system that enables drivers to make voice-activated cellphone calls, among other functions. (The Sync system comes standard on the SES trim.) Even the Focus's safety systems get an upgrade, with a total of six airbags, including seat-mounted side airbags.

I am in the market for a new car and the focus was my first choice. I have previoussly owned a 93 Thunderbird and a 97 Taurus and when I test drove the Focus I was in heaven. I loved the steering and the brakes. The get up and go was more than I expected, and I love the look of the car. All of the Focus' I have looked at seem to be great in price. Overall an awesome car. 2.0L twin cam powered engine. 5sp man transmission. light weight and the looks to boot. It has a ton of multi media support inc. blue tooth for your phone. Agile car and quite fun to drive. gets well over 40 mpg if your cruising down the highway "the right way" ;-) and putting around town takes a week and half to drain the tank.Sep 06, 2010

Accelerates from 0-50 in first gear (That's always fun). Good brakes, decent handling. There is some creeking now and then, it's not exactly hand made, however I have not had a single problem yet, after 25,000 miles.
It's a good looking a good looking car, and the interior is nice. Only bad thing about the interior is there is no light in the back so I had to put up a tap light ($10 fix, worth it :)).
Great mileage, 24 mpg city, between 34-36 mpg highway, depending to road grade. It has a smaller gas tank however, so trips to the gas station are as often as with a lesser mileage car, So far no maintenance, I will have to replace the tires at the 30,000 mile tune up, which is sooner than expected.
Fun car to drive! Handles windy backroads well.
If youra driver in snow you can manage, however this car is so light that someone without snow experience shouldn't attempt to drive in snowy/icy conditions.Feb 03, 2010

My Focus is my fist car, so this review will be a little bit generous, but I do know what I'm talking about.
As far as performance goes, it is a fairly quick car. At 140 HP, you would expect nothing, but it moves along nicely. Handling would be a strong point, it hugs corners nicely. I've noticed 2 problems with performance. 1, I wish it had just a bit more kick on acceleration, but it has plenty. 2, above 75 MPH, the front end is a little light, but most people will not experience this, for the law forbids it.
As for build quality, the car itself is very sturdy. when you shut the door, you know it is made of metal. The seats are very comfortable, they are squishy enough to be comfy, but firm enough so that you don't sink in over long trips. The trunk is also deceivingly large, and you can still fold the 60/40 split seats down if you need more room. I do wish that the sun visors were made of a little better material, but they are still not bad. I also wish it had a compass and thermometer.
As for appearance, it is a very attractive car. I've gotten mixed comments about it, ranging from "that's raw" to "kinda chickish" but honestly, I don't care, it's a great car. The back end is very well shaped, and the spoiler finishes it up nicely. I like the sides, with the character lines going across the doors, originating from the chrome Focus applicator. The grill, I think, looks pretty sharp. I've heard from people who really dislike the chrome bars, but then again, I don't really care, it is still a nice car. Inside it is pretty nice too, nothing feels too fake, everything is pretty high quality. I'm not an expert in interior styling, but I like it. The steering wheel is just the right size, but I guess that is personal preference.
As for cost, it is pretty cheap to maintain. Gas mileage is great, I've seen as high as 38 on the highway, with regular unleaded. I have not had any real problems that required maintenance, but I would imagine it would not be too expensive.
The Focus is a very fun car to drive, especially if you're carpooling. I don't really know how else to describe this part, so I will end it with a summary. Very good car, good mileage, good performance, nice car all around.Jul 18, 2009

The good:
Ford's Sync system gives the 2008 Focus SES one of the most sophisticated media and communications interfaces available. Freeway mileage is impressive.
The bad:
The Focus' interior borders on being drab, and its stereo suffers from a few usability niggles.

Having had an older Ford Focus just prior to this one, some of my expectations were particularly low. Whilst I was generally satisfied with the car, the 1.6L petrol engine lacked any real power, and the fuel economy left a lot to be desired when compared with the official figures. Fortunately, the decision to trade that one in for the newer model, and to make the switch to a 2L diesel with a 6-speed gearbox, addressed all the issues I had experienced with its predecessor, giving real over-taking power on the motorway, fuel economy in-line with official figures, and vastly improved handling courtesy of the Electronic Stability Program. Whilst the build and trim quality is no where near that of German rivals, it's still acceptable, with only a few occassional squeaks & rattles to complain about so far. Interiour and exterior styling is based on Ford's new 'kinetic design' and make the car quite nice to look at, and a pleasant place to sit in. May 05, 2009

Performance: Acceleration is average, braking is average although braking feel is a little soft, handling is responsive with quick steering.
Build Quality: It hasn't needed anything repaired yet. Pretty solid from when I bought it. No rattles or anything.
Apperance: Exterior apperance is definitely unique and is always a matter of opinion. I wasn't too fond of it at first glance but the look has grown on me. Interior is definitely an upgrade. It's clean and modern looking and the buttons and controls are well configured and placed.
Cost of Ownership: Gas is good with responsible driving. Unfortunately, I do a lot of driving so I don't notice the money I'm saving. But the car sips fuel and filling up is easy on the wallet. Maintenence is simple and cheaper than one might think. But really, it is a entry level vehicle, how expensive did you think it might be?
Fun Factor: Is it fun to drive? Yes. I have the 5 speed manual transmission and I will have to say that the car is geared pretty well and it's not bad when your foot gets a little heavy. I also have the car with the optional SYNC system which makes the car even more enjoyable. My calls are all hands free and the voice recognition is excellent. Definitely a great perk.
As I told my friend Tyler, Ford wasn't kidding with it's "MPGs meet MP3s" slogan. It's cheap, is reliable (so far) and fun. It's a welcome alternative to Sentra and Civic. Mar 12, 2009

Overall, this is the best car that I have driven. The steering is sharp and responsive, the acceleration is fantastic, athough the torque make it prone to Torque Steer and you need to drive gingerly on wet roads. The only critisism is the interior trim quality is a bit poor. The gaps between panels and the general finish is a bit second rate, but that said, it is still a nice and practical place to drive.Jan 18, 2009

I bought this as a commuter car -- and it's been super for that purpose. It's actually got a lot of head and leg room, and I don't feel cramped the way I did in the Corolla or even the Civic. Focus and Mazda 3 are the best front wheel drive handling cars I've driven especially at speed.

Yet it does pick up and go if you are in a hurry. Go take one for a test drive!! You will fall in love with it!! I love it! Great acceleration, breaking is good considering i don't have the ABS system and handling is great, i don't feel like i'm gonna go off the road if i'm driving a bit too fast. It's a brand new car so there is no maintenance to be taken care of. I love the interior and the exterior stylings. It's a great gas conserver at about 34-35 MPGs. I have owned all sorts of vehicles....Dodge...Ford...Toyota...Chevy...Mazda and BMW. I have never, ever enjoyed a vehicle as much as I enjoy this one. The cabin is SUPER quiet, even when shifting gears(can barely hear the engine)and the shifting is smooth as butter. It handles awesome, the ride is very soft, has plenty of power, the seats are very comfortable, the Microsoft SYNC easily plays all my Artists on my Wolverine 5160(160GB). It took about 5 minutes or so to index all the files, but when it finished, I asked it to play whatever artist I wanted and it responded beautifully. Hands-Free phone conversation is another Gem with this vehicle. The person on the other end can hear your voice perfectly. This is the real Bluetooth! I have the Audiophile system and music sounds awesome with the built in Subwoofer in the trunk. Also, Ambient lighting is great as well. Do yourself a favor. If you want to get a great vehicle that is inexpensive, but has quality to boot, please look into this car. You will not be disappointed.
