The Ford Ranger has remained solidly in the mid-sized, despite similar offerings from other automakers ballooning over the years. The Ranger is aging, but gracefully, and it continues to be a good truck with a solid starting price. Recent improvements have given the truck a much better ride, upgraded brakes, and a bump in interior quality.

Thanks to somewhat bland but timeless styling and a content-heavy facelift in 2004, the Ranger looks nearly as fresh today as it did when the latest generation first debuted in 2001. The 2004 update brought a taller and more well-defined grille, a curvier body, and a host of interior upgrades that include new seats and convenience features.
Ford offers the Ranger in a few different body and cab configurations that include an old-school regular cab, a supercab with a 6-foot bed, and a flareside option with recessed body panels in front of the rear wheels.

The Ranger is offered with three different engine choices for 2005: A 2.3-liter inline-four with 98 horsepower, a 3.0-liter V6 with 140 horsepower, and a 4.0-liter V6 with 160 horsepower. Trucks equipped with the larger V6 have no trouble accelerating to highway speeds and passing once there. The powertrain's low-down torque is ideal for off-roading, towing, and anything requiring low-range 4-wheel drive (4WD).
The 2004 suspension upgrade brought new bushings, shocks, and springs, which work with a new tire size to greatly improve the truck's ride quality and handling. Combined with a new brake setup that came to the Ranger line in 2003, the package adds up to a compact truck with confident handling and the capability to handle a heavy load when needed.

The Ranger's real ace in the hole is the variety of choice that it offers to buyers. There are multiple packages available that bring options like 4WD, various audio and entertainment upgrades, and a bevy of off-road performance bits. Ford has done a great job of keeping the Ranger feeling fresh and keeping it in the fight against the Toyota Tacoma and relative newcomers from Chevrolet and GMC. A few minor complaints are inevitable, and the Ranger has its share, from the difficult-to-operate exterior door handles to the awkward bed extender that is difficult to install.

The Ranger is available with a wide array of entertainment and technology options. At the most basic level, there's not much to write home about, but stepping up the trim ladder quickly rectifies that situation. At the XLT trim, a CD player jumps on board, and the 4WD model gets fog lights. The Edge model comes with either a six-disc CD changer or an MP3 player, and the Tremor package adds a premium Pioneer AM/FM/MP3/six-disc CD system to the Ranger with a 510-watt amp and a 10-inch subwoofer.

The Ranger left much to be desired in the area of crash test results. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that moderate overlap front and roof strength were only worthy of an Acceptable rating, while side crashworthiness got a Marginal score. Only the head restraints and seats were rated as Good, as testing found that dummies' movement inside the cabin during a crash were reasonably well contained by the seats and head rests. The truck was not tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, three-point seatbelts with force-limiting pre-tensioners, child seat anchor points, anti-lock brakes, and an electronic brake distribution system.

At this point in the Ranger's lifecycle, Ford has sold enough of the trucks to recoup any research and development costs that came along with its creation. As a result, the company has been able to sell the Ranger with a starting price that lands well below $15,000, which undercuts the competition and firmly cements the truck's place in the great value hall of fame. You don't get much for that money. Namely, it buys you a four-cylinder engine and almost no creature comforts to speak of, but for many truck buyers that's all that really counts.

This is a good mid-sized truck especially with 4x4. Gas mileage isn't too babe. Easy to maintain. Not to expensive. Its a very good starter truck say a high-schooler who's wanting something nice and looker. i would recommend this truckAug 21, 2014

Does what it's ment to do. Cheap to buy, cheap to fix, reliable, good off road even with 2WD, looks good for a small truck, good stereo, durable. Back seats are really only good for little kids, but they're great for throwing stuff in to keep dry. Tows pretty well for a small truck. Front seats are comfy and being a small truck, its easy to drive around town and park. Blind spots are awful though. Bad things are that the truck is clunky and will always make noises, interior is all plastic and there are no "luxury" features to speak of. Gas mileage is OK with the 3L V6. Best of the small american trucks availible (ranger, s10, sonoma.)Mar 03, 2014

I like the look of this truck as well as the handle it has when driving. Its easy to control and visibility is quite high since you are higher up than most vehicles. Full back window makes it easy to see from all angles. The cab space is limited, but for a truck the gas mileage is quite good and plenty of space for things in the trunk (just not people).Oct 08, 2012

I like the front seats, it rides well, drives well, and it handles nicely. There is not a comfortable ride in the rear seays for any length of time so the seats are a waste of space. The fuel mileage sucks for commuting and is expensive to ride to and from work daily.Jan 06, 2012

I bought this 4WD pickup for a "go to work" vehicle. I worked on various construction sites around SE Michigan and most parking lots on new construction sites were temporary lots of dirt and gravel. Mix that with mud and snow during the winter and spring seasons and you can see why a 4WD vehicle is a priority. For the long distant jobs, I needed the reasonable gas mileage afforded by the Ranger. The creature comforts provided an enjoyable setting for the often hour to two hour trips to and from work. After I retired, I used the truck to carry garden supplies, new ornamental trees, and shrubs from the local nurseries. I like having the more comfortable ride than a full size pickup and still having the utility when needed. Living in a rural area with little snow plowing in the winter, the Ranger gets me where I need to go. The vehicle my wife drives is a Chrysler Town and Country minivan. With all the mechanicl and electrical problens with that thing, it's hard to believe they are both 2005's. Only problem I have had in 6 years, is the ABS sensors in the front rotors. Put new rotors on with those and all is like new again. It's great to just turn the key and go!Dec 18, 2011

Performance is more than Adequate with a 4.0L V6 Ford Engine under the bonnet.
Braking being a truck is not the greatest, yet stops well enough.
Handling is very good considering it is a Truck and not a car.
Build quality is good has needed some repairs here and there, also has some noises

its got 270hp and 282ftlbs i upgraded the brakes and all of the fluids to syenthic, its got a K&N air intake, rancho rs 5000 front and rear shock, oversized factory stock tires they are 255/70/R16. i put awestin black brush gaurd with a hand grande and a skull mounted on the brush gaurd.The bulid quailty is good everything is very easy to work on and bulit very solid. i love the interior carcaol and back seats, with viynel flooring very rugged, the piant needs some work, but i do use it to carry scape metal. very fun to drive around in the speaker system is great, the ride is smoother than most trucks, and plus u can go off road cause its 4x4 can u can take it just about anywhere. i love my truck and i would never sell it and i would recommend this truck to anyone.Nov 07, 2010

It works great and runs fine. The vulcan 3.0 is slow and not all great on gas, and overall quality is o.k. but nothing fancy, it is just the base xl model. Also easy to customize. It is also a reliable truck as well. Jul 26, 2010

It had a billet grille, cold air intake, 20" wheels, sprayon bed liner, tinted windows, 4.0 V6, dual exhaust systems, leather seat, Sony stereo with Infinity Speakers didn't get around to the subs. I should not have got rid of it.Jul 11, 2010

Love my Ranger. Decent on gas. Easy to maintain and clean due to rubber floors. Lots of ground clearence with good stability. Bought it with spyed in box liner (only way to go). Not much room if you need to carry more than 2 people though.Oct 08, 2009

It is a great 4 x 4. Had lots of fun driving it. After working on the turbo and intercooler the van was much livier and responsive. Fitting a bigger diameter exhaust system also did the trick. I loved my van.Sep 05, 2009

Its a manly vehicle, no dumb little asian car like the civic. It drives great, maybe a little rough. It's actually not bad on gas, I can get 500Km on a tank. And it's fun to drive, exhilarating. The only bad thing is that she's really heavy on fuel but yet again it's nice to have some power under you're right foot if you need it!!!!!!!!!!

The acceleration is ok, you really have to have a heavy foot to get it going off the line. However, during the acceleration it has great sound, I love driving my Ranger because of it. Only thing I regret about it is the gas mileage, its pretty bad for a 3.0 V6, the best I've ever got was 290km...per tank. Jul 19, 2008

I do not recommend this truck without 4 wheel drive.
With 2 wheel drive it can still tow the fishing boat but it has some trouble in bad weather.
You can turn off the passanger airbag which is convenient if you have smaller people in the truck with you.

good little truck, bought it with 40k a year ago, now has 95k. run it mostly as a commuter 120-180 miles per day. I dont really like the torsion bar front end, as it makes it hard to get a suspension lift. after its paid off I'll be looking to swap in a solid front axle then put about 8in of lift under her May 19, 2008

This small truck does not lack the ability to carry around big loads. decent size bed makes it easy to move around anything. interior is at the bare with no power windows or locks on my model. radio, cd player, tape player, air condtion works well.
