2004 Nissan x ebrake is stuck
Daughter pushed on the e brake but doesn’t know how to release it. Told me it’s stuck. I’m in SC she’s in OR. How do you release the ebrake. I thought there was a handle?

Taking its name literally, the 2004 Nissan Xterra is a compact SUV with an emphasis on both Sport and Utility, unlike the SMVs (soccer mom vehicles) and GHVs (grocery hauling vehicles) that most of the current crop of SUVs have morphed into. The 2004 Xterra is geared towards the young and active and not so much luxurious and insulated comfort.
There are few changes this year, except for new 17-inch alloy wheels for the SE trim. The XE comes as a base model rear-wheel drive SUV with a 143-hp 2.4-liter I4 and 5-speed manual. Moving up to the 3.3-liter, 180-hp V6 engine gives you a choice of the manual or 4-speed automatic and 4WD. The SE comes only with the V6 and a 4-speed auto, but is availalbe with 2WD or 4WD. A supercharged version of the V6 gets 210-hp. Low range gearing and a standard limited slip differential on the SE help make the 2004 Xterra a true off-roader, and being one of the few SUVs left to be built with a truck frame and suspension, the Xterra actually is better suited to rough roads than dry pavement. Sturdy adjustable roof rails hold up to 125 pounds and come with a built-in storage basket.
The compact Xterra seats four in two rows, with the rear row folding flat for up to 66 cubic feet of space. One cumbersome aspect is that the seat bottoms have to be removed and stored somewhere. Rear seats sit up higher than the front, so passengers don't feel blocked in. A higher roofline in the back provides more headroom as well. The XE is pretty bare bones, while the SE adds foglights, power features, 6-CD player, cruise control, and optional leather seats and sunroof. ABS is standard on all, and traction and stability control are offered as options. Drivers love the 4WD off-roading capabilities of the 2004 Xterra and its rugged look. They feel it's a bit underpowered, with poor acceleration. Overall legroom is limited and the interior materials look cheap. Nissan customer service does not win high marks.

It’s a very straightforward vehicle. Nothing fancy but I love driving it. I drove it from Colorado to Kansas and the only thing that I would complain about was the gas mileage was not great at all, but that was to be expected, other than that, I enjoyed the ride.Mar 16, 2022

Overall I have a lot of LOVE for this suv ... nothing like blowing pass a huge 4x4 with my little 2004 Nissan Xterra V6 4wd in a blizzard!!!! I have worked on old muscle cars so the layout of my X is new to me, very tight but I keep on trying .... web pages like this one have gotten me out of hot water and shown me ways around those tight areas .... just changed the starter and was lost just how to work in the tight spot ... page saved the day! Words of advice while changing the timing belt you might as well take care of the water pump and harmonic balancer .... LOVE MY XDec 15, 2014

I spend a considerable amount of time researching vehicles and found a good deal on a 2004. I was familiar with the Frontier and wanted to stay along that lines for a second "play vehicle". I found that the Xterra provided that Nissan familiarity and the over-heard cover I needed. I found one with 120k and all it needed was some tweaking. I found that the power steering "factory" clamps were leaking and that was a very easy fix. After changing air filter to a performance product improved my gas mileage. Regular maintenance and staying away from things that go bump is the night has me thinking I can easily get this X to last quite afew years.May 11, 2014

I love this Xterra! I'm currently trying to black it out...on a budget :) I'm open to suggestions!!! I've already tinted the tail lights, blacked out the bumpers, and side steps. Next is to lower my tint to 20%.

Surprisingly, the blind spot is not horrible. Two wheel drive makes snow driving a little tricky, but sand bags made driving no problem for the three winters I've had it. This car looks fantastic, but the seats get stiff after a few hours of driving. Perfect for camping, outdoor sports, etc. Oct 16, 2012

I've recently bought a 03 SE S/C. My boys love it for its looks. Wet braking and traction are dangerously poor due to Goodyear SR-A tires. Will be changing them for Hankook or Goodrich soon (Ouch! the price of 17" AT tires). I'm just 6ft tall but my head touches the ceiling, even with the adjustable leather seat at its lowest. Great quiet ride, nice to drive, useful roof-rack, love the sound system. 11mpg average is ok I guess but the 19gal tank is consequently a bit small. Power is a bit weird : V6 S/C 3.3 liter but only 210hp? Good 4wd but not very spritely. Horribly tiny rear-view mirrors.Feb 27, 2010

Great Truck! I absolutely love my Xterra! It is one of the best all around vehicles I have ever owned.
Unstoppable off-road, even without any modifications. Not a drag racer at 4,000lbs with 190HP, but great engine torque. It hits low and the torque curve stays flat. Last winter, I pulled two vehicles out of ditches during a snowstorm.
Gas mileage sucks royally, but what would you expect from a heavy vehicle with high rolling resistance tires and the aerodynamics of a barn door? Funny thing is, if I drive like a maniac, I get 15 mpg. Then I spent a tank taking it easy and got 16, so, go nuts, it doesn't seem to matter.

This was my first car driving full time and I loved it! It had pretty good get up and go. The handling was a lil tighter than I prefer. I was stuck in my Xterra at about 20 mphs dead center and the car held up amazingly! The exterior of the car was nice and clean as for the inside, it was pretty small, I had a young son at the time I was driving and with him and myself, and my husband it become a cramped car, which was not cool. Over all if your want something midzised that runs well and isnt too hard on cast and maintenance, the Xterra is a good choice.Sep 22, 2009

This truck was pretty crappy to say the least. It was a little on the
anemic side for power and was quite a gas hog. Its off road abilities

2004 Nissan Xterra Key Fob Programming Issue
I bought my 2004 Nissan Xterra used and it did not come with a key fob. I bought one on eBay and successfully programmed it to my car via Youtube video. That key fob has since broken and I have attempted to program a new remote to my car numerous times without success. I can enter the programming mode where the hazards flash a few times, but when I click a button on the new remote, the car does not respond with the hazards flashing once like it should to continue programming. I have swapped my key fob battery out and even bought several key fobs to try in case the first one was bad from stock. I get the same roadblock with each key fob and can't get a single one to be read by the car during programming. I've scoured the internet but have not found the same problem mentioned anywhere. I'm not sure if maybe there's an issue with the receiver on the car end? I've been using the same type of key fob (attached pic) as the one I used to have that worked. Please help! Would love to have a remote again!

2004 Xterra 3.3L no start
My 04' 3.3L xterra will click but vehicle does not start. I replaced the starter and got the same result. Now, if the starter is out of the vehicle, it works fine. Install the starter in vehicle and all i get is a click... Does anyone have any idea what may cause this bang your head against the tool box problem??? Any diagnosis smethod is greatly appreciated...

Xterra will not start after replacement of valve stem seals.
Could the pistons get out of sync and throw the timing off? I set the #1 to TDC and lined up the distributor to the 1 and it will not start.
