The 2004 Toyota 4Runner is nearly identical to the 2003 model, which was a complete redesign from 2002.
The base engine is a 4.0-liter V6 rated at 245 horsepower and 283 lb/ft torque, with a 4.7-liter V8 rated at 235 horsepower and 325 lb/ft of torque available as an upgrade. The V6 gets 18/21 (4x2) or 17/20 (4x4) city/highway fuel efficiency, while the tow-intended V8 gets 16/19. Reviewers for both 2003 and 2004 have noted that the V8 is only necessary for heavy towing jobs; the V6 is so well designed that it should be able to handle 99% of what is put before it.
The 2004 4Runner-like the 2003-is larger than any of the earlier generations of 4Runners, with an extra 4.5 inches of length and a wheelbase that is 3 inches wider. Somehow, Toyota manages to make the 4Runner as easy to corner as the earlier, smaller models.

This is a smooth SUV. It handles incredibly well and is very safe and comfortable to drive. It is insanely reliable and has tons of cargo space. It's the perfect sports SUV in that it tows boats, bikes and skis.
November 20, 2012This is the best truck I have ever owened! It does ride like a truck, so if you want a truck that rides like a car buy a Highlander, they are built to ride like a car a Toyota Camry in fact. My son was involved in a very bad accident in a 2005 version of my 4 runner. A loaded dump truck pulled out in front of my son only able to get up to 8 mph. My son was going 55 mph in the left lane of a major highway just slightly ahead of a fully loaded log truck in the right lane. My son locked the brakes swerved hit the lt rear end with his lt front end of the dump truck. My son was then horizontal in the middle of the highway & the log truck struck the 4 runner broadside on the driver side going 55 mph, fliped the 4 runner over 3 times & came to rest on top of my sons 4 runner. It took 3 tow trucks to remove the log truck off of the 4 runner. My son was trapped for 2 hours. Yes my son was hurt.., however he did not die,he is not paralyzed & his brain was never injured! I believe the many safety features & many air bags of this Toyota 4 runner helped to save his life.
May 4, 2013Purchsed the vehicle new in 2004. The truck has all the bells and whistles, very good performance and has encountered NO quality issues as of yet. It has 60,000 miles and drives/looks like it's brand new. I would purchase a new 4 runner in a heartbeat

July 15, 2009One of the best vehicles we have ever owned. Low maintenance costs, sporty and comfortable, never had any major issues. We would definitely buy another Toyota in the future. This is a great vehicle for a young couple with children or a first vehicle for a teenager.
March 6, 2015like car a lot very convenient, but, not a truck very reliable easy to move kids and their equipment in didnt use for towing but has a lot of power for towing good for long trios with cruse control and new stereo
June 30, 2013It looks great on the outside and runs great as well. Never had any issues beside the regular maintenance. what I really like about the car is how reliable it is and also how specious it is, though it has only two row sitting the back is huge.

March 28, 2024I LOVE the Toyota 4Runner however it lacks in standard options and is way too over priced because of its YouTube Fame right now. But certain configurations of particular models are highly desirable but they are just too expensive for what you get.
April 30, 2021I enjoyed the capabilities this 4runner has over some of the other comparable cars. The Sport edition is in my opinion the best option for the 4runner. It gives it a more sporty look, as well as a better suspension. It has a great audio system as well.
February 17, 2014Only the V8 is the best of the Toyota 4 Runner, for this cold weather I particularly picked the V8 cause I know it is very strong and reliable in these low temperatures
