The 2002 Ford Excursion continued to roll through the marketplace like the giant that it was. Very few changes were implemented for 2002: the most important was the introduction of power-adjustable pedals, making it easier for soccer moms to drive the massive juggernaut.
Two trims were available for the 2002 Excursion, XLT and Limited. Buyers could choose rear-wheel drive, or optional four-wheel drive. The Excursion's 4WD option was marketed for suburban safety, though, rather than for all-terrain versatility; you weren't likely to want to take this landwhale off-road.
When it came to roominess, the Excursion gave new meaning to the 'full-size' in 'full-size SUV'. Its overall length was 226.7 inches, with a width of 79.9 inches. The Excursion seated 9, with ample legroom and headroom for all, and had a cargo capacity of 146.4 cubic feet.
The Excursion came off the line with a 5.4 liter overhead cam V-8 that delivered 255 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque; buyers could upgrade to a 6.8 liter overhead cam V10, with 310 horsepower and 425 lb.-ft. of torque, or go for even more power with a 7.3 liter V-8 turbodiesel option that put out 250 horsepower and 505 lb.-ft. of torque.

The two most important items to decide on are (1) which engine do you want / need, and (2) 4x4 or 2WD?
The V8 gas engine should only be considered if youre not going to tow anything heavy (less than 5000 lbs) i.e. people only. That is why they had the V10 gas and the V8 Powerstoke Diesel options. Either of these can easily handle 10,000 lbs towing, with the big differences between them are maintenance costs (diesels more - 15 quarts oil) and fuel economy (gas 12 mpg - diesel 19 mpg). If youre into venturing off the asphalt path, 4x4 is a must. Note the Diesel engine models changed from the 7.3L to the 6.0L around 2002-2003. 6.0L can have head gasket issues if not bullet proofed. The 7.3L is legendary and priced accordingly.May 11, 2021

The next biggest vehicle out there is a Chevrolet suburban. The excursion is approximately 2 ft longer 6 in wider taller and carries 4x8 sheets of plywood without tipping them on their sides. Not to mention that it toes over 5,000 lb more than a Chevy suburban.if youre looking for a small vehicle this is not yet but if youre looking for a monster to carry gobs of people gobs of payload and carry or tow a massive trailer this is the vehicleNov 24, 2020

I can't say enough about the pulling power these things have, not that I haul a lot but when I do power isn't an issue. Probably the most reliable rig I've ever owned, never had to do anything other than put fuel and change oil.Sep 08, 2014

The best thing I like about this SUV is the power and surprisingly decent mileage (about 15-16 mpg). Second is the looks people give when they see it in person,not to mention the positive comments on how nice it looks. I've had a lot of different lifted trucks and this one is definitely at the top of the list!Jul 27, 2014

Other than expensive fluid changes and tires and low gas mileage this car has been solid and served our family well. I would recommend this car to a friend especially if towing a trailer. This is a big car with a big engine but if you take care of it you should get 300,000 miles out of it.Apr 18, 2014

I have owned my excursion for about a year. The Diesel 7.3 is a great motor with the bullydog system and K&N filter on it. Other than it steers like a ford truck, this truck is great overall. some minor problems with the 4wd. I also plow with it and does great.Dec 31, 2013

I added the banks package, rear air bags, a full duty air compressor with spare tank and lifted the front end 3 inches. I just love vacationing, camping and road trips in the excursion. Soon I am going to be removing internal door and side panels and add sound deadening materials.Dec 13, 2013

I bought this truck with 25,000 miles on her, and now have 225,000 miles on it. It has given me zero problems, I run 35" tires, and tow relatively heavy stuff all the time. When I run into someone in trouble, she's always been ready to help. We even up-righted a turned over truck and put it back up on the road. I thouroughly enjoy my Excursion. It is perfect for my family of six. I love the fact the there is 8000 pounds of truck around my wife and four children. The third row is a real bench and there is still room behind it for a stroller and groceries. It is great for family vacations. A comfortable ride that can go anywhere and haul everything. The power of the 7.3 diesel is ridiculous. The fuel economy is comprable to most minivans yet it looks and sounds sooooo much cooler. It handles well for the beast it is and the power makes it fun to drive. I love to hammer down on the freeway, spool up the turbo and blast off. My wife, doens't enjoy it as much... well that is unless she is doing it.May 09, 2012

I love this Excursion. It is superior for transporting family and towing a trailer or boat.
It has looks, leather, and it's Impressive.
Only drawback is low gas mileage. Makes you feel invincible on the road.

We have had this "Beast" since 2005, and it is still in good condition:) Mom loves it,
its big, it looks mean, and its the perfect truck for a big family. i do recommend this

love the looks, very rigid truck all the way around, i put a hypertech power programmer in it to give extra kick and better fuel economy. probably pushing about 700 ft.lbs of torque.pulled a 10,000 pound load with it with out struggling.Sep 09, 2009

Things I dislike with my car:
1 Door swiches tend to get stuck
2 Front leaf springs are too weak
Other than that, I`m very pleased with it.

2002 Ford Excursion Cranks but Won't Start
2002 Ford Excursion 7.3 Powestroke Won't Start This morning I noticed that it was taking a little longer to fire up, but thought nothing of it. I ran several errands around town during the day just fine. Then my wife and I drove an hour and turned it off for 10 minutes. When we got back in, it would not start The engine turns over quickly and strong. Newer alternator and batteries within the last year. Voltage 12.7 at both batteries. Glow plugs relay clicks on. 12.7v on the one big post and 8.5v on the other when the key is turned on. Fuel tank is 7/8 full. The curly-q wait to start light comes on like normal and then goes off after 3- 5 seconds. The previous owner replaced the fuel bowl with a electronic frame fuel filter and pump. There is a fuel gauge on top of the valley. When the key is turned on, the pressure gauge goes from 0 to 65 psi. When cranking, the tach gauge does not move and RPMs stay at zero. When cranking, no smoke comes out the exhaust. Oil was 3 quarts low, but has now been topped off and same result. I have not touched the ICP sensor, IPR, or cam sensor. Any thoughts? My old 7.3 OBS had the fuel bowl heater short and blow that 30 amp fuse, but I don't have a fuel bowl in this beast and I don't know the details about the fuel system since it was done by the last owner. Here is what his ad on Craigslist said about the truck before I bought it about 4 months ago: "Stage 1 injectors, bigger turbo, adrenaline HPOP, S&B cold air intake, regulated fuel return with stock filter delete, new frame rail fuel filter, oil rail cross over lines, DP tunes, MBRP exhaust, Quick-Start high output alternator, mean green gear reduction starter. Valve cover gaskets have been replaced and glow plugs with injectors." Thanks in advance for the help! Michael
