This was my second car. Bought with 36000 miles on it and traded in with 89000 on it. The only bad thing about the car was slow acceleration. Was reliable. Catalytic converter went bad around 50000 miles. Had no other problems. Comfortable, nice looking small car.May 19, 2012

VERY reliable! The front seats were roomy (2-door coupe), and the trunk had plenty of room! I drove the car across the country in the dead of winter and it handled VERY well on the icy and snowy interstates. Gas mileage was always good (even when it was fully packed to the gills)! Automatic tranny paired with with the 16-valve 4cylinder was peppy and smoothe! The 2-door coupe has a very sporty look. It is only too bad the 4 door was restricted to a hatchback during this time.Jun 25, 2010

If you want a subcompact tank, this is it. It gets amazing gas mileage and actually performs pretty well. If you can put up with its ugliness its the perfect car to own. Very fun in a four speed. Word!Sep 29, 2009

good gas milege and power but sometimes poor throttle response and "rocking" five speed so its very fun to drive plus its the sport model if that tells u anything its built wonderfly however there is no chassis and everything is built straight to the body

It was my first car, whadda ya expect? LOL. Drove okay, but needed a lot of work once it hit about 130,000 miles. Would idle funny at times to the point where the steering wheel would shake. That wasn't fun.Aug 15, 2009

Les performances d'un Tercel ne sont pas dans les plus élevées du marche de l'automobile. Cependant, l'économie d'essence est au rendez-vous. L'auto est solide, après 20 ans, il tient encore sur ces roues comme quand je l'ai eu le premier jour. L'extérieure de l'auto n'est pas trop laid sans être super accrocheur, ça passe inapperçu un Tercel 88. Il n'y a pas beaucoup d'argent à mettre pour l'entretient, quoiqu'un moteur carburateur est toujours plus compliqué (je connais plus l'injection électronique). L'auto n'est pas très intéressante à conduire sauf l'hiver.Jul 02, 2009

1988 Toyota Tercel 2 door Hatchback gas MPG problem
So i just bought this car off craigslist for a 1000 bucks, and it works great. it did have a problem, where the car turned off it would act as if it kept running, the mechanic said it was the carbourater gasket plate and he replaced it for 200 bucks, he also said it would help with my gas MPG, but it hasnt changed at all. I currently get about 190 miles out of a tank, i feel this is extreamly low, i was wondering if anyone could tell me how much i should be getting MPG wise with this car and what the problem might be? its a little shakey when it starts up. its a automatic transmisson, thanks.

I have a 1988 Toyota Tercel and it won’t idle and it’s a pain to start I have to constantly feather it to keep it alive And when you take off it hops up and down before it goes. I’ve adjusted the idle screws multiple times no effect It’s also a stick shift
