I own a 1968 beetle... I named her Delilah... It has always been my dream car and having went my whole life never stepping foot in a bug until the day I bought Delilah, I have to say she drives like a dream...The rumble of a vintage engine and the need to actually press the brake to stop, makes my heart race...I love the manual window cranks and the lack of fancy gadgets inside... pure nostalgia...I feel like every time I start her up Im stepping back in time... Also like Im not only a "player" of the punch buggy game I am now "the game" itself and I am spreading buggy love everywhere I drive... so far the gas mileage is great as well... nothing beats a bug!!!Mar 10, 2011

This was an incredible car for what it was intended for. Probably the easiest vehicle that I've ever worked on, and definatly the most fun! Lousy gas mileage by modern standards, but for the day, remembering that Detroit was sucking back more than 20L/100KM ... Impossible to get stuck. Body - rock solid - not a sign of rust. I had "performance enhanced" engines in it (135+ HP, stock was 65) and was able to remove, tear apart and rebuild in less than a day. Engine replacement time less than an hour in and out! I defy anyone to do that with any vehicle buillt since then! Jul 28, 2010

I love this car, end of story! This is definitely a project car that I am going to slowly restore, but it is worth every penny. Not only does it get great gas mileage, handles great in the snow, and fires up every time I turn the key, but it is very fun to drive. The smile factor is a 10. The only performance flaw I can find is that the carb needs to be tuned and the transmission is starting to go...other than that, not many complaints from a 40 year old car!Dec 26, 2008

I was driving my beetle through the forest south of Wakulla County after a botched scuba dive attempt in a sinkhole,getting more and more angry because my friend, whose head was usually up his rear, had forgotten his regulator once again. Well, anyway, we're driving through the woods at about 40mph, and WHAM!, my Beetle takes a tree stump blowing out both tires and sending the battery flying of of the car, (convertible, don't ask). My Beetle was damned indestructible! I threw the battery back in, changed one tire and drove back to Tallahassee on a rim. I LOVE BEETLES! I think I liked that Beetle more than the Beatles, and I like(d) the Beatles a lot. Now if the Beatles had driven Beetles, instead of Minis, I would have liked them even more, maybe. Oct 20, 2008

I really liked this car. This was the somewhat rare, and mostly unwanted, Autostick. It was a kick to drive and handled pretty well. Not a lot of power from the single port 1600cc, but it still moved the little car pretty well. My big complaint was the Autostick. The thing leaked like a sieve. If it had been a standard transmission, I would have kept it.Sep 03, 2008

My 1968.5 Volkswagen Bug was my second car. This car was my road dawg. This car taught me everything I know about shifting AND taking turns. This car used to break down all the time, but it was easy to fix. I had alot of good times with this car. It had IRS, which was only found on the later models, but it was a 1968 so it was NOT a superbeetle (superbeetles had IRS). I also had Integra GSR seats, limo tint, 1835cc engine, superstreet tranny (for high speeds such as freeway). Aug 15, 2008

VW Beetle.The name says a whole lot...Oldschool german car built for tough offroad aswel as onroad conditions.The suspention and handeling is very good,independent suspention gives for handeling not seen on any other cars exept for Porsche that shares the same kind.Its an expensive car to maintain,1600 Twinport engine goes for R8500 recon....Performance wise,I wount setle for a Bug if you have a need for speed...Styling and looks is the best I ever seen, I'll have a beer with the designers any day!!!!!Aug 14, 2008

As everybody knows, the VW Beetle never changed it's body shaped in it's 30 plus years in production; the only thing that changed was internals. Things like updates from 6-volt to 12-volt electrical systems, bigger brakes, and the addition of some safety features. One noticeable outside change was the headlights; after 1966 in the US the Beetle had headlights that were mount horizontally, right in the fender. Prior to 1967, Beetles had what i called 'frog eye' headlights; the actual bulb was inside of a sealed glass casing, which followed the contours of the fenders. My 68 was the exception; research after it was totaled revealed the car was a European model, never meant for US export. This explains why it still had the early style headlights. What it did have was a 12 volt electrical system and the first few safety features VW tried to implement, like a collapsable steering column. The column had a small perforated section that, in a crash, would break and allow th column to crush down, rather than coming back and either spearing the driver in the chest or pinning them to the seat. Also included on this model was something known as a Z-bar, which was an attempt to cure the 'snap oversteer' problem i mentioned in my 66's review. It was an equalizer spring that connected the two swing axles together in an attempt to act as a sway bar. On my 68 though, someone removed it or it was never installed, so snap oversteer was still a problem. Other than that it's was basically the same as the 66 Beetle i have nowMay 22, 2008

There was something very special about the'68 Beetle. It seemed to be the most perfect mechanical car Ive ever driven.It's hard to explain.I bought it used in Chicago. I paid $850 and it was the best deal I've ever got on a vehicle. Unfortunately some moron(a greaser 1974)was flying thru the the High School parking lot in a Riviera and hit me head-on. Luckily for me the entire front window flew 30 feet,I got 10 stitches in my head, the steering wheel had my rib cage imbedded in it.Thank God I was in my 68 VW. I believe the 68'Beetle is the best damn car Ive ever owned.Dec 13, 2007
