1960 Ford Thunderbird Preview summaryImage

The 1960 Ford Thunderbird was the last of the "Square Birds." It continued in the vein of powerful engines for the slick four-seater, with several new additions.

The base engine remained a 5.8-liter, 352-ci V8 rated at 300 horsepower, while the step-up was the very powerful 7.0-liter, 430-ci V8 rated at 350 horsepower.

To celebrate the outgoing of the second generation of Thunderbirds, a "Golden Edition" was available, which featured the first steel sliding sunroof.

Sales remained strong, with 92,843 Thunderbirds sold, 2,536 of which were the "Golden Edition" and 11,860 of which were convertibles.

While my first car in life was a 59 Thunderbird hardtop, my second was a 1960 Thunderbird convertible. I have owned many since those days. The 60 Thunderbird, in my humble opinion, is the best of the squarebird variety- much like the 57 was the best of the 1st generation Thunderbird. The 60 Thunderbird convertible was the first to offer a fully automatic top, which leveraged the mechanical of the retractable hardtop to place the ragtop into the trunk with a tug of a switch. It was available a full year before Lincoln got on board with that technology for their convertibles in 61. They are not, however, nearly as nimble or graceful, when it comes to turning or stopping, as their predecessors from 55-57 are. They are beautiful, rugged machines that were warmly welcomed by most folks when they were new but then were fairly disrespected by the collector car crowd for the following 30 years. It is nice to see that they finally have come into their own prestige much like Generation one did, right out of the gate.Apr 13, 2023

Many reasons to Love this Bird. It was the last year of the Square Bird. It was the last year ford offered the Monster V8 430 cu in Lincoln Engine. It was the only year this Car almost won the Datona 500 race but for a small part it would have. Aside from that , I drove one for 6 years and it was a Hell of a car. Dec 30, 2022

What a machine - we'll never see anything remotely like it again...Stright line comfort and performance - corners like a bucket of seaweed.... power windows and power seats, in 1960!! Wow. An absolute sign of the times, the 1960 Thunderbird defines the era beautifully.Jul 24, 2009
