| 2018 | $17,477 | $16,160 – $17,878 |

| 2015 | $12,576 | $11,398 – $12,574 |
| 2014 | $10,903 | $9,949 – $11,064 |
The Toyota Prius's current nationwide average price is $17,392, and its year-round low is $14,675.34. That puts the model's current pricing well within a familiar used-car range for shoppers comparing different model years. Recently, prices have come down for the 2024 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Prius is a strong used-car pick if you want efficiency, practicality, and a long-running reputation for easy ownership. The all-generations owner rating is 4.66/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its fuel economy, reliability, and comfortable ride. They also frequently highlight cargo space, safety, and everyday value, which helps explain why the Prius has stayed popular with commuters and budget-minded buyers.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2024 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in expert reviews are real-world fuel economy that can trail expectations, a cramped back seat, and limited cargo space in some recent years. Even so, the Prius remains appealing because it delivers a modern hybrid experience with strong safety and efficiency credentials.
26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Prius models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Prius as dependable, efficient, and comfortable for daily driving. Expert commentary also reinforces its reputation for durability and low-stress ownership, especially for shoppers who value a car that is easy to live with over the long haul.
- Owners rate the Toyota Prius between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally manageable, but checking maintenance history and prior repairs is still smart because hybrid components can be costly if they need attention.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Prius?
Across all model years, at 66% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2027 | 99.4% |
| 2026 | 93.7% |
| 2025 | 92.1% |
| 2024 | 90% |
| 2023 | 85.7% |
| 2022 | 77.2% |
| 2021 | 67.4% |
| 2020 | 61.9% |
| 2019 | 59.5% |
| 2018 | 58.3% |
| 2017 | 53.8% |
| 2016 | 52.4% |
| 2015 | 51.5% |
| 2014 | 53.1% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) is standard in every 2025 Prius, with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: Toyota Audio Multimedia with an 8-inch touchscreen on LE, XLE, and Nightshade Edition trims, plus a 12.3-inch touchscreen on the Limited; both systems include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The Prius’ hybrid powertrain includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an 83-kilowatt electric motor, with a net output of 194 horsepower; with AWD, Toyota adds a second 30-kW electric motor at the rear wheels, increasing the net output to 196 hp, and the EPA gave the Prius Nightshade Edition a 52 mpg rating in the combined, city, and highway categories.
Which Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota Prius offers these trims:
- LE: This is the entry point to the lineup, and it gives you the Prius’s core hybrid efficiency, Toyota Audio Multimedia with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. It’s the trim to start with if you want the Prius experience at the lowest price.
- XLE: This trim adds more comfort and convenience, and it can be paired with the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen. It’s a strong step up if you want a more upscale daily driver without moving all the way to the top of the range.
- Nightshade Edition: This trim adds black 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, and an exclusive Karashi paint color, giving the Prius a more distinctive look. It’s the style-focused choice in the lineup.
- Limited: This trim brings the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen as standard and adds the most premium-feeling equipment in the lineup. It’s the best fit if you want the most fully equipped Prius.
What Toyota Prius do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Prius years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 992 | 29.2% |
| 2025 | 933 | 28.5% |
| 2023 | 835 | 29.8% |
| 2014 | 718 | 25.8% |
| 2016 | 656 | 28.8% |
| 2015 | 654 | 27.2% |
Higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare, more pricing spread to shop, and a better chance of finding the trim and condition you want. They also tend to be the easiest years to cross-shop for value.
What is the Toyota Prius's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $30,351 | −6.92% |
| 2024 | $29,802 | −1.59% |
| 2018 | $17,477 | −1.33% |
| 2014 | $10,903 | −0.87% |
| 2023 | $28,171 | +0.02% |
| 2017 | $16,366 | +0.54% |
| 2019 | $19,511 | +1.2% |
| 2016 | $15,182 | +1.61% |
| 2021 | $21,776 | +3.22% |
| 2022 | $23,658 | +3.28% |
| 2020 | $21,668 | +5.06% |
| 2015 | $12,576 | +6.98% |
The overall pattern is mixed, but several recent model years are moving lower, which can create better opportunities for used buyers. A few older and mid-cycle years are rising, showing that demand remains healthy for well-kept examples. The 2014, 2017, and 2023 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year. The 2015, 2020, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

The car is great. Awesome MGPs. I love the way I fit in the cockpit, it feels like I'm driving a spaceship. Driving is super smooth. I wish I had a backup cam because it's difficult to see out of the back window. Decent turn radius. Extra hidden storage tray in the trunk. You can pull back on the joystick to slow down without wearing out the brakes. There is a filter button for when you are driving through a stinky area. Even though it is a higher tech car I still feel like I can work on it without have to buy a bunch of unique tools. Now I just need to figure out how to maximize the MPGs by driving slower. Even with my lead foot I average 41 MPG.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Prius enters its fourth generation with many of the hallmarks that have made it so popular and a few new tricks as well. It remains one of the most recognizable hybrids on the market, and the test-drive summary frames it as the heart and soul of the hybrid segment. That combination of familiarity and freshening is what makes this Prius distinctive: it is still built around the qualities that made the nameplate a benchmark, while Toyota is clearly trying to push it forward.
What stands out most is the Prius’s role as the standard bearer for hybrid growth and its long-running reputation for fuel-saving capability. The summary also suggests that Toyota is aiming to “shatter expectations” with this generation, which signals a more ambitious approach than simple continuity. At the same time, the question posed by the test drive is whether it can retain its “Hybrid King” status, which hints that the car’s appeal is tied not just to efficiency, but to whether it can keep leading a crowded and increasingly established hybrid market.
