Recently, prices have come down for the 2024 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Prius is a strong used-car pick if you want efficiency, practicality, and easy daily ownership. The all-generations owner rating is 4.66/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its fuel economy, reliability, and comfortable ride, and they also highlight cargo space and safety as part of its everyday appeal. Across the model years, the Prius comes through as a dependable, economical hybrid that fits commuting and routine driving especially well.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2024 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs called out in recent expert reviews are the cramped back seat, limited cargo space, and real-world fuel economy that can fall short of expectations.
29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Prius models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Prius as a dependable hybrid with strong fuel economy and comfortable daily use. The recurring praise centers on efficiency, reliability, and the kind of easy ownership that makes the Prius a long-running favorite for commuting.
- Owners rate the Toyota Prius between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to condition, maintenance history, and hybrid-system care than to the model’s core reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Prius?
Across all model years, at 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

| 2026 | 93% |
| 2025 | 91.5% |

Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0)
- Infotainment: Toyota Audio Multimedia (TAM) infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA gave the Prius Nightshade Edition a 52 mpg rating in the combined, city, and highway categories.
Which Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota Prius offers these trims:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the standard Toyota Audio Multimedia system with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
- XLE: This trim adds more equipment and can be paired with the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, making it the best-value choice if you want a more upscale tech setup without moving all the way to the top.
- Nightshade Edition: This trim adds black 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, and exclusive Karashi paint for a more distinctive look.
- Limited: This trim brings the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen and the most available equipment, including a surround-view camera system.

The 2017, 2018, and 2023 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2015, 2022, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Should I buy a used Toyota Prius now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −7.89% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −1.77%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 32.9%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $29,670. The Toyota Prius offers a reputation for efficiency, practicality, and easy daily ownership.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The Prius’ hybrid powertrain includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an 83-kilowatt electric motor, and Toyota says the net output measures 194 horsepower; with AWD, Toyota adds a second 30-kW electric motor at the rear wheels, which increases the net output to 196 hp.
- Tech: Every 2025 Prius comes equipped with a Toyota Audio Multimedia (TAM) infotainment system, and both TAM systems include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) is standard in every 2025 Prius, and the highlights include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.
- Starting price: Pricing ranges from $29,545 to $36,560, including the $1,195 destination charge.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2028 inventory to mature.

The car is great. Awesome MGPs. I love the way I fit in the cockpit, it feels like I'm driving a spaceship. Driving is super smooth. I wish I had a backup cam because it's difficult to see out of the back window. Decent turn radius. Extra hidden storage tray in the trunk. You can pull back on the joystick to slow down without wearing out the brakes. There is a filter button for when you are driving through a stinky area. Even though it is a higher tech car I still feel like I can work on it without have to buy a bunch of unique tools. Now I just need to figure out how to maximize the MPGs by driving slower. Even with my lead foot I average 41 MPG.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Prius enters its fourth generation with many of the hallmarks that have made it so popular and a few new tricks as well. It remains one of the most recognizable hybrids on the market, and the test-drive summary frames it as the heart and soul of the hybrid segment. That combination of familiarity and freshening is what makes this Prius distinctive: it is still built around the qualities that made the nameplate a benchmark, while Toyota is clearly trying to push it forward.
What stands out most is the Prius’s role as the standard bearer for hybrid growth and its long-running reputation for fuel-saving capability. The summary also suggests that Toyota is aiming to “shatter expectations” with this generation, which signals a more ambitious approach than simple continuity. At the same time, the question posed by the test drive is whether it can retain its “Hybrid King” status, which hints that the car’s appeal is tied not just to efficiency, but to whether it can keep leading a crowded and increasingly established hybrid market.
