Overall, the Toyota Highlander has built a strong reputation across its model years for reliability, comfort, and family-friendly features. Drivers appreciate its spacious interiors and smooth rides, often highlighting its impressive safety features as a key asset. Many also enjoy the performance and power of the engines. However, some common criticisms include a lack of advanced infotainment options in older models, tight third-row seating, and varying cargo space depending on configuration. It’s well-equipped, comfortable, and family-friendly SUV with strong safety tech, a smooth ride, and premium touches (thanks to the platinum trim) like a panoramic moonroof, leather seating, and 12” touchscreen. Its V6 offers solid power and decent fuel efficiency for a 3-row SUV, and overall it feels modern, quiet, and refined. It’s a great value if you want a reliable, upscale daily driver! The main thing it’s missing is more usable third-row and cargo space. The 3rd row is tight for adults and cargo behind it is limited. Otherwise, it’s a strong all-around pick and fits exactly what I was looking for. I would compare this to the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and the Ford Explorer.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Highlander stands out as a family-focused midsize SUV that emphasizes comfort, practicality, and long-term dependability over flash. In Toyota’s third-generation Highlander, the redesign brought a sharper, more muscular shape, and the model gained more technology and active-safety features. That combination helped make it one of the more appealing choices for buyers who want a roomy, easygoing SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and resale value.
For 2019, the Highlander’s appeal also came from its broad range of everyday usefulness. It offered seating for up to eight, and the available safety equipment included adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Standard equipment included a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a backup camera, USB ports, and 18-inch wheels. Powertrain choices included a 2.7-liter inline-four with 185 horsepower on the LE, a 3.5-liter V6 on other gas models, and a hybrid version that made an electrically assisted 280. The tradeoff is that this Highlander was never especially exciting to drive, and some buyers may also find the infotainment and interior materials less impressive than the rest of the package.
