The main trade-offs center on high ownership costs, technology that can be frustrating to use, and limited cargo space in some years.
31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Mercedes-Benz S-Class models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently describe the S-Class as a deeply luxurious sedan with strong performance, advanced technology, and a refined driving experience. Across the years in the data, the model also earns repeated praise for comfort, craftsmanship, and a premium cabin.
- Owners rate the Mercedes-Benz S-Class between 3.92 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.

Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, automatic reverse braking, a semi-automated parking system, and a surround-view camera system
- Infotainment: a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with a native navigation system, augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system
- Fuel efficiency: 48 miles of electric range and 23 mpg in combined driving once the battery is depleted
Which Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers these trims:
- S 500: the entry point with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, 442 horsepower, 413 pound-feet of torque, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel plus a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen; best if you want the most accessible way into the lineup.
- S 580: adds a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 496 hp and 516 lb-ft, plus interior ambient lighting; a strong choice if you want more power and a richer feel.
- S 580e: the plug-in hybrid adds an electric motor and a 22.7-kWh battery pack, with 503 hp, 553 lb-ft, and an estimated 48 miles of electric range; this is the best-value trim for buyers who want efficiency and performance together.
- AMG S 63 E Performance: the performance flagship combines a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor for 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft, plus an estimated 16 miles of electric-only propulsion; choose this if you want the most extreme performance in the lineup.
What Mercedes-Benz S-Class do most buyers choose?
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 1,243 | 32.2% |

| 2024 | $116,794 | −5.21% |

Most model years in the table are down year over year, which creates opportunities for used buyers looking for better value. The largest drops are in the double digits, while a few years have declined more modestly. The spread also shows that newer models can still move down meaningfully, even when they remain expensive overall.
The 2017, 2024, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Mercedes-Benz S-Class now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −9.03% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −5.21%.
- Deal availability: The 2024 model has 30.9% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $77,495. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers a richly appointed cabin, a smooth ride, and a strong sense of flagship luxury that make it feel special across generations.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2025 lineup includes a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 442 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 496 hp and 516 lb-ft, and a plug-in hybrid with 503 hp, 553 lb-ft, and an estimated 48 miles of electric range.
- Tech: The 2025 model includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system.
- Safety: The latest model adds a semi-automated parking system, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, and a surround-view camera system.
- Starting price: The 2025 Mercedes-Benz S 500 starts at $118,900.
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Features are good not as much tech obviously as newer models but I'm good with that. Touchscreen feature i kinda miss , but I'll get over that. Great values for this car $37K..42k miles 1 owner ! Well taken care of..ride is so silky smooth , great space...will add for this size car trunk is rather small..used the space for rear seating..roomy vehicle..Love it !

This model is particularly a great S-Class version. It is so much better than the successor model S. The features are pretty much the same but having the tactile models and not a giant Ipad in the middle made the car so much more user friendly. I hope the next version reverts back to tactile buttons and not all of these haptics that just do not work. It is a card with an excellent ride and the sound system is top notch. I have never really had a smooth quieter ride than the S Class Mercedes.

Favorably reviewed: CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a luxury full-size sedan that pairs the brand’s familiar emphasis on design and refinement with a new powertrain for 2023. It is described as being a few years into its latest generation, and Mercedes introduced a plug-in hybrid setup for this model year. That combination gives it a distinctive role for buyers who want a high-end sedan with the ability to travel far on electrons without fully committing to a battery-electric vehicle.
Its appeal is rooted in impressive technology, premium interior materials, and impressive electric range, all of which reinforce the S-Class’s upscale character. At the same time, it is not much more efficient than the non-hybrid powertrain, and it is very expensive. It also does not qualify for the federal tax rebate, which may matter to shoppers weighing the plug-in hybrid’s benefits against its cost.
