The Mercedes-Benz S-Class's current nationwide average price is $51,445, and its year-round low is $48,105.17. That puts the model's current pricing well below its recent peak and gives you a useful benchmark for comparing listings across years.
Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong used luxury pick if you want a flagship sedan with broad appeal and a long track record of owner satisfaction. The all-generations owner rating is 4.7/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the S-Class for its luxurious feel, comfortable and spacious interiors, smooth ride, and powerful engines. They also highlight the model's advanced technology, craftsmanship, and safety innovations as defining strengths.
Expert reviews rate the 2022 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs across recent years are high ownership costs, technology that can be frustrating to use, and a price tag that stays firmly in luxury territory.
29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Mercedes-Benz S-Class models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the S-Class as a luxurious, comfortable, and high-performing flagship with strong craftsmanship and advanced technology. Expert reviews also reinforce its polished ride, premium interior execution, and overall sense of refinement.
- Owners rate the Mercedes-Benz S-Class between 3.92 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied more to complexity and upkeep costs than to the basic appeal of the car itself, so a well-documented service history matters.
What should I look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Across all model years, at 73.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

| 2026 | 98.2% |
| 2025 | 95.8% |

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Standard advanced safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, automatic reverse braking, a semi-automated parking system, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: All 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a native navigation system with augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The S 580e is the efficiency leader of the lineup, with 48 miles of electric range and 23 mpg in combined driving once the battery is depleted.
Which Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers these trims:
- S 500: The entry-level model brings a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, 442 horsepower, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and standard 4Matic all-wheel drive, making it the best-value trim for shoppers who want the core S-Class experience.
- S 580: This trim adds a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 496 hp and 516 lb-ft, giving you more power while keeping the same luxury focus.
- S 580e: The plug-in hybrid adds an electric motor and a 22.7-kWh battery pack, with 503 hp, 553 lb-ft, and an estimated 48 miles of electric range.
- AMG S 63 E Performance: The performance flagship combines a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor for 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft, plus an estimated 16 miles of electric-only propulsion.
What Mercedes-Benz S-Class do most buyers choose?
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2016.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 1,237 | 31.4% |
| 2022 | 1,155 | 30.7% |
| 2016 | 1,000 | 30.3% |
| 2024 | 967 | 30.8% |
| 2015 | 905 | 31.2% |
| 2021 | 740 | 30.7% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right combination of price, equipment, and condition. They also often sit in the sweet spot between newer features and more accessible used pricing.

Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you're shopping used because it creates more room to find value. The steepest drops are concentrated in several recent and mid-cycle years, while a few years are falling more slowly.
The 2024, 2017, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −10.29% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −3.01%.
- Deal availability: The 2024 model has 30.8% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $78,218. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers a polished, spacious cabin that gives it the kind of flagship presence shoppers expect from the nameplate.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Four S-Class models are available for 2025, largely distinguished by their powertrains, including a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 442 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque and a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 496 hp and 516 lb-ft.
- Tech: All 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a native navigation system with augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system.
- Safety: Standard advanced safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, automatic reverse braking, a semi-automated parking system, and a surround-view camera system.
- Starting price: The entry-level 2025 Mercedes-Benz S 500 has a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $118,900 (including $1,150 in destination charges).
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2028 inventory to mature.

This model is particularly a great S-Class version. It is so much better than the successor model S. The features are pretty much the same but having the tactile models and not a giant Ipad in the middle made the car so much more user friendly. I hope the next version reverts back to tactile buttons and not all of these haptics that just do not work. It is a card with an excellent ride and the sound system is top notch. I have never really had a smooth quieter ride than the S Class Mercedes.

Why it stands out
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that blends advanced technology with a deeply polished sense of craftsmanship. In the W222 generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and the redesign also brought a first-in-the-world lighting setup that used LEDs throughout the interior and exterior. The cabin was a major part of the appeal, with a sumptuous mix of wood and metal accents, selectable ambient lighting, and a pair of 12.3-inch screens under a single panel that gave the car a modern, high-end feel. It also retained many physical controls, which may make the system easier to live with than some newer designs.
For 2015, Mercedes expanded the lineup with the S 550e plug-in hybrid, the revived S 600, and the AMG S 65. The S 550e made 329 system horsepower and offered 14 miles of electric range, while the S 600 produced 523 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque and the S 65 delivered 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet. That range of powertrains helped the S-Class cover both efficiency and serious performance, and the car also offered features such as adaptive suspension, a surround-view camera system, and optional rear executive seating packages, massaging seats, and Burmester surround-sound audio. Buyers looking for a used luxury flagship will also appreciate that the W222 has a very good reliability record overall, though it remains expensive to maintain and can still suffer from electrical issues and suspension problems.
