Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury car that blends advanced technology, refined engineering, and a deeply opulent cabin. In the W222 generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and the model also featured selectable ambient lighting, a digital instrument cluster, and a thoroughly updated COMAND system with two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel. It was also loaded with the kind of comfort and convenience features that define the S-Class name, including rear executive seating packages, active parking assist, massaging seats, and Burmester surround-sound audio.
For 2017, the W222 received a facelift and tech update, which helped keep it feeling current in a segment where presentation matters as much as performance. The lineup for this year included the S 550 with a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 making 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, and the AMG S 63 with a hand-built 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 making 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet. That combination of strong engines, rich materials, and a long list of available technology makes the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class especially appealing to buyers who want a flagship sedan that feels both fast and exceptionally well appointed.
At the same time, this is not a car that makes sense as a bargain. The S-Class is expensive to buy and costly to maintain, and many of its best features were optional rather than standard. Even so, its reputation for luxury, safety, and high-end engineering is a major part of its appeal, and the 2017 model captures that formula well.

The car has every option I was looking for even the omission of HUD. I think at its original price point it is a great value. The car has a color that I have yet to figure out but other than that Im totally satisfied with my purchase. I had a Porsche Panamera 4S but Im getting older and more mature plus everyone should own an S Class once in life.

How much does the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $38,014 |
| Year-Round Low | $37,945 |
| Year-Round High | $40,620 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $40,396 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.90% |
Prices have softened 5.90% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 696 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its elegant design, driving experience, performance, safety, and comfort, which fits a flagship luxury sedan aimed at buyers who want a deeply refined cabin and strong road manners. If you want a full-size luxury car that feels special and well equipped, this model year lines up well with that use case. With 32.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also describes it as dependable, and that kind of praise matters when you’re considering a used luxury sedan with complex systems. The combination of strong satisfaction and positive comments about long-term ownership suggests you can feel confident if the car has been maintained properly.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the basic appeal of the car and more about the cost and complexity of keeping a high-end flagship in top shape.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on a luxury sedan where repairs can be expensive if something has been overlooked.
Focus your condition check on signs of uneven wear, inconsistent panel fit, and any evidence that the car’s electronics or comfort features are not working as intended. On a model like this, a clean history and a careful inspection matter more than usual because the ownership experience depends heavily on the car being well preserved.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s-market discount.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 696 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.90% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $37,945, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $38,014 sits slightly below last year's $40,396.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale will depend heavily on how well the car is maintained and presented. If you keep mileage reasonable, preserve service records, and avoid examples with accident history, you’ll be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2017 is the right path if you want a well-regarded flagship sedan with strong owner approval and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as a balanced choice when you want satisfaction, luxury, and a softer price than it had a year ago.
