CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 719 currently listed for sale and an average price of $38,785, 33.4% of 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.9 / 5 stars.
60.1% of 2017 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out because it sits in a generation that Mercedes used to showcase its newest technology and engineering. The W222 series brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and Mercedes said the car was the first in the world to exclusively feature LEDs over traditional bulbs, with 500 light units throughout the interior and exterior. It also introduced “magic body control,” which used an advanced road-scanning system to detect potholes and imperfections in advance and adapt the suspension to them, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated multi-modal radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
For 2017, the W222 received a facelift and tech update, and the cabin remained one of its biggest strengths. Mercedes’ MBUX digital interface and infotainment system featured on two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. The car also offered selectable ambient lighting, and many versions were available with luxury and convenience features such as rear executive seating packages, sport packages, AMG appearance packages, air purifiers, active parking assist, massaging seats, and Burmester surround-sound audio. Buyers looking at this model year get the appeal of a deeply engineered flagship with a very strong reliability record for the generation, though it is still expensive to maintain and can be costly to repair if something goes wrong.

The car has every option I was looking for even the omission of HUD. I think at its original price point it is a great value. The car has a color that I have yet to figure out but other than that Im totally satisfied with my purchase. I had a Porsche Panamera 4S but Im getting older and more mature plus everyone should own an S Class once in life.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its elegant design, driving experience, performance, safety, and comfort, with dependable ownership being another recurring theme. For you, that means this model year fits especially well if you want a luxury flagship that emphasizes refinement and a polished driving experience. With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also describes it as a dependable and trouble-free choice, with reliability and long-term confidence coming through in the way people talk about ownership. That said, you should still expect luxury-car upkeep, so a well-documented service history matters if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on body condition, electronics, suspension behavior, and signs of uneven wear. Because this is a high-end used car, you want the cleanest, best-documented example you can find.

- Inventory: There are 715 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.32% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $38,540 sits slightly below last year's $40,280.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy with less risk of immediate overpayment. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and documentation. Clean history and strong upkeep should matter more than ever if you want to protect value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
