Summary
With 268 currently listed for sale and an average price of $39,945, 41.8% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 3.92 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that puts technology, craftsmanship, and comfort at the center of the experience. In this generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and the cabin was designed to feel especially refined, with wood and metal accents flowing together more smoothly than before. It also brought selectable ambient lighting, which helped define the interior atmosphere, and the car’s feature set was broad enough that many versions were richly equipped even if some of the best items were optional.
What makes the 2016 model especially appealing is how much advanced equipment it packed into a traditional luxury sedan shape. The W222 generation featured two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. It also offered magic body control, which used road scanning to adapt the suspension, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Buyers also got the sense that this was a car built to showcase Mercedes technology, from night vision to available rear executive seating, massaging seats, and premium audio.
There are tradeoffs, though. The S-Class is expensive to own, and the source notes that upkeep can be steep even though this generation has a very good reliability record overall. It also points out that suspension and electrical issues are common concerns, which is worth keeping in mind for a used example. Even so, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class remains distinctive because it combines flagship-level luxury with a long list of advanced features and a reputation for being one of the most sophisticated sedans of its era.

I think this car is trash. They have not been taking good care of it. Missing all the passengers windows buttons. The driver seat seat is broken and the car is filthy inside.

| Current Average Price | $28,392 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,392 |
| Year-Round High | $32,139 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,164 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.73% |
Prices have softened 11.73% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 946 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong fit if you want a flagship luxury sedan that emphasizes comfort, technology, and refinement, though it is best approached with realistic expectations about ownership costs. Its user rating is 3.92/5, which suggests shoppers see meaningful strengths alongside some tradeoffs.
Drivers commonly praise its luxurious feel, advanced amenities, and great handling. The review summary also points to value for money and superior performance compared with competitors, which matters if you want a car that feels special without being purely about badge appeal. In use-case terms, this is the kind of sedan that makes sense if you want a highly equipped long-distance cruiser with a premium cabin and a lot of high-end features.
31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that puts technology, craftsmanship, and comfort at the center of the experience. The review summary also describes it as reliable and trouble-free in the long term for many owners, while still noting that maintenance costs and electronic components can be challenging over time.
That combination means you can look at this model as a sophisticated used luxury car with a decent reputation, but not one where you should ignore upkeep history. For long-term ownership, the main risk is that expensive repairs can outweigh the car’s appeal if prior maintenance has been inconsistent.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was minor or structural. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension, electrical systems, and any signs of deferred maintenance. Because this is a luxury sedan with complex equipment, condition matters more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 946 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.73% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,392, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $28,392 sits slightly below last year's $32,164.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more selectively today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and documentation, since buyers are likely to compare your car against a fairly broad set of similarly priced listings. If you keep the car well maintained and present it cleanly, you’ll be in a better position to protect value when it’s time to sell.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.73% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a sensible choice if you want the current-year balance of price, availability, and luxury features, especially if you can verify a clean history and strong maintenance records. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing for a lower entry cost, but the 2016 remains the better starting point when you want a well-equipped flagship sedan with a softer market price.
