What is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | $36,249 | −13.54% |
| 2023 | $47,632 | −12.52% |
| 2018 | $22,857 | −9.65% |
| 2015 | $14,083 | −8.43% |
| 2022 | $38,945 | −7.83% |
| 2020 | $30,021 | −7.81% |
| 2017 | $17,587 | −7.59% |
| 2024 | $53,990 | −6.35% |
| 2014 | $12,727 | −4.92% |
| 2025 | $58,915 | −4.71% |
| 2019 | $27,794 | −2.41% |
| 2016 | $15,284 | −1.73% |
Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it creates more room for value. The steepest drops are concentrated in newer and mid-cycle examples, while a few older years are changing more slowly. That pattern suggests you can often find meaningful savings without moving all the way to the oldest cars.
The 2016, 2019, and 2025 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?
- 2026: 8/10
- 2024: 8/10
- 2022: 10/10
- 2021: 10/10
- 2020: 10/10
- 2018: 10/10
- 2014: 6/10
For an expensive luxury car, the Mercedes E-Class doesn’t come with much standard safety tech. Our test car had high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system.
For the safest used buy, the 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 models all post the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
Should I buy a used Mercedes-Benz E-Class now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −4.71% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −6.35%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2018 model has the most listings at a current average price of $22,857. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers a spacious, refined cabin that has long been one of its defining strengths.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The heart of this PHEV is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine paired with a 120-kilowatt electric motor and 21.2-kilowatt-hour battery, and Mercedes claims it takes as little as 3.8 seconds for this wagon to accelerate to 60 mph.
- Tech: As expected, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with an augmented reality navigation system, music streaming, and a sensational Burmester 4D surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos technology.
- Safety: The optional Driver Assistance Package adds 16 additional systems, among them adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, and active steering assist.
- Starting price: The AMG E 53 Hybrid is the performance upgrade, with a base price of $94,700, including destination.

The E-class is the midsize line of Mercedes cars, so it’s fine for all sizes except for very tall and large people. The new inline six cylinder is my favorite engine because it has plenty of power and is fuel efficient. Overall, the quality is here and has been for years.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class stands out for offering a rare kind of luxury in a class of one, especially in Cabriolet form. Following a substantial refresh for the 2021 model year, the 2022 lineup changes little overall, which means it continues to lean on the E-Class’s established strengths rather than chasing a major redesign.
For 2022, the most significant change is the cancellation of the AMG E63 and E63 S variants, and the lineup is left with turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder power plants. Automatic high-beam headlights are standard on all 2022 E-Class models, and a couple of paint colors are new. In the coupe and convertible body styles, rear USB charging ports are now standard equipment. That combination makes the E-Class appealing to buyers who want a polished luxury experience with a few useful updates, though the loss of the V8-powered AMG versions narrows the range of performance choices.
