What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Sonata?

Across all model years, at 69% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2023 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: SmartSense, Hyundai’s collection of advanced driving assistance systems.
• Infotainment: a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sonata Hybrid sedan offers a similarly adequate 192-hp drivetrain, which benefits from immediate electric motor torque when accelerating from a standstill and can return an EPA-estimated 47 mpg in combined driving.

Which Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2025 Hyundai Sonata offers these trims:

• SE: the entry point with the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a clean, easy-to-use cabin layout.
• SEL: adds the option of all-wheel drive and suits buyers who want broader everyday versatility.
• SEL Convenience: the best-value trim, adding a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, navigation, dynamic voice recognition, wireless smartphone charging, and digital key technology.
• N Line: the performance-focused trim with the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, dual-clutch automatic transmission, 19-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, rack-mounted steering, quad-outlet exhaust, Hyundai Pay tech, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system.

What Hyundai Sonata do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Sonata years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.

These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare and a stronger chance of finding the right trim, mileage, and price combination. They also tend to be the years shoppers cross-shop most often when looking for a newer Sonata with a broad feature set.

What is the Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

Most Sonata model years are down year over year, which is helpful if you’re shopping used and want to stretch your budget. The steepest drops are concentrated in several older and recent model years, while a few years are declining more slowly and therefore retaining more of their value. Overall, the table points to a market where used buyers can find meaningful price relief across much of the lineup.

The 2023, 2017, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Hyundai Sonata now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −7.06% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −9.22%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 36.5% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 36.6%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $21,672. The Hyundai Sonata offers a roomy cabin and trunk, which makes it especially easy to live with as a daily driver.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The Sonata’s base 191-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is unremarkable, although it does offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as an option for SEL models – all other Sonata and Sonata Hybrids have front-wheel drive (FWD).
• Tech: All models have a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and, starting with the Sonata SEL Convenience, there's also a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel.
• Safety: Every 2025 Sonata has standard SmartSense, Hyundai’s collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS).
• Starting price: Across the entire lineup, pricing ranges from $28,145 to $38,945, including the $1,245 destination charge.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
