Driving enthusiasts seeking a safe family car should check out the 2025 Hyundai Sonata.
While its standout features are its value and safety ratings, in N Line trim the Sonata also offers some emotional appeal. Affordable sports sedans are increasingly rare, and aside from the Kia K5 GT and Subaru Legacy Sport, there’s little else in the 2025 Sonata N Line’s segment that gives you this much horsepower for this kind of price. Of course, there is a penalty to pay at the gas pump, but otherwise the N Line delivers. In general, new rear-seat air conditioning vents and improved crash-test ratings boost the 2025 Sonata’s appeal and while gas models aren’t very fuel-efficient, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid fares better in this respect.
Verdict: Hyundai refreshed the Sonata in 2024 and improved its safety rating in 2025, keeping it competitive against midsize sedan rivals. All versions offer compelling value and are impressively safe, while the N Line model is pleasantly sporty.
When you’re cleaning out your refrigerator, it’s easy to tell when something doesn’t smell right. The same is true when you’re gazing at something that doesn’t look right. And you could say there is something off about the 2025 Sonata’s styling.
Last year Hyundai dramatically restyled the car’s front end, to great effect. The result looks more modern and futuristic, and although angular and technical, the Hyundai’s new face marries nicely with the Sonata’s curvy bodywork. When viewed in profile, the car looks long, sleek, and well-proportioned.
Around back, though, the styling updates are less successful. The angular lighting, boy-racer vortex generators on the taillights, and multiple character lines converge into a collection of disparate cues that seem rather incongruent with the rest of the car.
Of course, the car’s overall appearance depends on the trim level you select. The 2025 Sonata comes in SE, SEL, SEL Convenience, and N Line trim levels. Get a 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, and you can choose from SEL and Limited trim levels. Across the entire lineup, pricing ranges from $28,145 to $38,945, including the $1,245 destination charge. New Blue HEV (hybrid) and SEL Sport models are due to be added for the 2026 model year.
Our test car had N Line trim, extra-cost paint, and floor mats, bringing the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) to $37,080. Unlike many sport-tuned vehicles, the Sonata N Line’s interior wasn’t black. Instead, it was dark gray, and while you might think it wouldn’t make a difference, it did. Still, more color contrast would be welcome. The red stitching, red accents, and metal pedal covers don’t go quite far enough to inject some stylistic excitement. Other Sonata models offer a choice of a black or gray interior color scheme, at no additional cost.
The quality of the interior materials is good, and the switchgear is clearly marked and easy to find, reference, and use. The dual digital screens under a single display panel look high-tech and offer a simple user experience, but we found the speedometer numbers between 40 and 80 mph hard to see due to the steering wheel. That range is kind of important to reference, and a digital speed display is not available.
The Sonata’s base 191-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is unremarkable, although it does offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as an option for SEL models – all other Sonata and Sonata Hybrids have front-wheel drive (FWD). The Sonata Hybrid sedan offers a similarly adequate 192-hp drivetrain, which benefits from immediate electric motor torque when accelerating from a standstill and can return an EPA-estimated 47 mpg in combined driving.
There is a Sonata that can raise your pulse, and it has the N Line designation. The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces a robust 290 hp and a healthy 311 pound-feet of torque from 1,650 rpm to 4,000 rpm. It employs a dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) to power the front wheels, but, unfortunately, AWD is unavailable. Additionally, the N Line has 19-inch wheels with lower-profile tires, a sport-tuned suspension, rack-mounted instead of column-mounted electric steering, and a quad-outlet exhaust system.
We tested the Sonata N Line in Southern California, and our evaluation route included the fabled Mulholland Highway near Malibu. While the Sonata N Line’s P245/40R19 Pirelli P Zero all-season tires squealed more than we’d prefer, this car proved itself plenty capable in the canyons, with a brash and boisterous character that makes it a car you muscle as you hustle, rather than dance with in a graceful manner.
The same is true in urban and suburban settings, where the Sonata N Line’s commendable zip is frequently accompanied by a loss of grip as the turbocharged engine’s torque tugs the steering wheel while breaking the front tires loose. This version of the Sonata is begging for an AWD system, preferably with torque-vectoring capabilities.
Firm suspension tuning produces a taut ride and athletic handling, but the Sonata N Line remains comfortable to drive in town and offers impressive ride isolation and body control over bumps, cracks, and dips. The brakes are easy to modulate, and resisted fade, rumble, and vibration when driving with enthusiasm in the mountains. The steering isn’t particularly crisp or communicative, but the steering wheel itself is thick in all the right places.
With its maximum torque arriving at just 1,650 rpm, the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder supplies enough squirt to make every trip fun. The DCT transmission is also agreeable, and we like its unique character in this sport-tuned Sonata. Perhaps too much. The EPA says a Sonata N Line should get 27 mpg in combined driving, but we observed a fuel efficiency of 22.4 mpg on our testing loop.
One thing we liked about the Sonata N Line was the standard panoramic glass sunroof, which let in plenty of natural light. Another thing was the gray interior, instead of what you typically find in a sports sedan, which is black. Those two features and the 64-color ambient interior lighting system helped to make the Sonata seem larger and more welcoming inside, with red and metallic accents to provide a sportier look and feel.
The N Line’s heated and power-adjustable front seats have fabric inserts and appropriate bolstering, so they hold you in place when rounding turns. They offer good long-distance comfort, and provide a proper driving position – all that’s missing is a seat ventilation system.
For the 2025 Sonata N Line, Hyundai adds air conditioning vents for the rear passengers, a welcome upgrade. They reside on the back of the center console above the USB charging ports. Adults will find the Sonata’s back seat comfortable and accommodating. There’s plenty of headroom and legroom, although people with very long legs must be careful of the hard plastic front seatback panels.
Storage space in the Sonata is both plentiful and thoughtful. Under the center armrest is a roomy bin, and each door panel armrest includes a slot that’s perfect for holding a smartphone. There is a tray on the center console housing the wireless smartphone charger, and it has a small ridge in its surface to prevent the phone from sliding out of place. A cubby next to the cupholders is perfect for house keys or the Sonata’s key fob.
Hyundai doesn’t provide a trunk popper on the fob, so you must wait for the hands-free smart trunk to open it for you. Stand near the back of the car for a few seconds, and it will open automatically as long as you’ve turned that feature on through the settings menu on the infotainment system. Alternatively, you can push a square button embedded into the taillight panel.
When the trunk opens, it reveals a 15.6 cubic-foot cargo area. That’s more than some rivals offer, but less than others. The trunk lid hinges are enclosed, so that makes it easier to pack without worrying that you’ll crush something when closing the lid. Also, full-size suitcases fit when stored on their sides.
Specs for the 2025 Sonata put it on a par with similar new cars. All models have a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and, starting with the Sonata SEL Convenience, there's also a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel. They reside under a single curved panoramic display that looks good but suffers from more reflections than expected.
Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and the ability to connect two smartphones to the Bluetooth simultaneously. Bluelink+ is also standard, and is complementary for original owners of Hyundais. It provides remote engine starting, a panic notification function, safe teen driving technology, emergency assistance, a find-my-car locator, and access to a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The SEL Convenience trim expands on that with a navigation system, a dynamic voice recognition system, wireless smartphone charging, and digital key technology. Move up to the N Line for Hyundai Pay tech and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system.
Hyundai’s infotainment system is excellent. From the pleasant graphics and intuitive user interface to the inclusion of traditional knobs and buttons for stereo volume, radio tuning, and main menu shortcuts, it is extremely easy to understand and use. Additionally, the voice recognition system quickly understood my conversational commands and produced fast, accurate, satisfying results.
There’s also peace of mind thanks to Bluelink+, which is free to use for the lifetime of the vehicle as long as you’re the original owner. For example, if you experience trouble, the red SOS button on the roof puts you in contact with people who can help you. Combined with the panic notification capability, the Sonata seems safe when standing still.
Fortunately, the Sonata is also safe when it’s moving. Or crashing. Last year, although the sedan earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it also scored Poor in the updated moderate overlap frontal-impact collision test. This year, the Sonata earned a Good rating in that evaluation, so the IIHS awarded the model a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
What happened? According to a Hyundai spokesperson, the automaker improved rear-seat passenger protection and the car’s overall structural integrity. In addition, it made structural changes designed to meet new, upcoming federal standards early. The IIHS says 2025 Sonatas manufactured after November 2024 qualify for the Top Safety Pick+ rating.
Every 2025 Sonata has standard SmartSense, Hyundai’s collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). The highlights include forward collision warning with intersection assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additionally, the Sonata has lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Highway Driving Assist is standard on the Sonata N Line. It’s a semi-autonomous technology that pairs the standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering assist system to help the driver accelerate, brake, and steer. It works remarkably well in a variety of situations, but the navigation-based automatic curve slowing function is aggravating to the Sonata’s driver and other motorists on the road. Additionally, the lane-keeping assist system proved irritating on winding mountain and coastal roads. But otherwise, we had no complaints about the Sonata’s ADAS.
If you upgrade to the Sonata Hybrid Limited, you get even more safety and driver-assistance tech. This version has a surround-view camera system with Hyundai’s Blind Spot View Monitor and added parking assistance features, including sensors and automatic braking. Hyundai also offers its Remote Smart Parking Assist on this version of the car. It allows you to stand outside of the Sonata and, using the key fob, command it to autonomously drive itself forward or backward. That’s helpful when someone else has parked too close or your spouse hoards things to the point that your garage is almost useless for storing a car.
Also, it is worth noting that the 2025 Sonata earns five-star crash-test ratings in nearly every assessment performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That includes rollover resistance. The only evaluation resulting in a four-star rating was the driver’s side protection in a frontal-impact collision.
The Hyundai Sonata N Line is one of the last midsize sports sedans from a mainstream brand. There is value in that if you love to drive, but you need a family car. Additionally, neither the Kia K5 GT nor the Subaru Legacy Sport can match the Sonata’s Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. So, if you want a fun, safe, roomy, and affordable car for transporting your loved ones, the Sonata N Line is more or less it.
Beyond that, every 2025 Hyundai Sonata offers the Bluelink+ connected services plan, a generous powertrain warranty, five years of complimentary roadside assistance with no mileage limit, and three years or 36,000 miles of free scheduled service. Hyundai has announced it will drop the maintenance plan starting with the 2026 model year, so you’ll definitely want the 2025 Sonata.
From a value standpoint, this car is unbeatable except for the N Line’s fuel economy. If you enjoy the journey as much as the destination, that’s a small price to pay in exchange for the turbocharged Sonata’s power and performance. But if you want to maximize fuel economy, there’s always the Sonata Hybrid.
Overall, despite this midsize sedan’s age, the extensive update to the 2024 Hyundai Sonata and the safety upgrades for 2025 – as well as its three available powertrains – ensure it can readily compete with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, the two sales leaders in the segment. You may have overlooked this Hyundai in the past. Now, it demands your attention.
